Post subject:  Chatroom Summoning
Chat room summoning has been temporarily disabled pending a discussion about whether or not to continue supporting this feature. Chat summoning currently uses 4 times more server load than all the rest of all of HW combined. It's also been a controversial feature since it was implemented, giving us the option to drop it altogether.

We will keep you updated on further developments. Meanwhile, those are the reasons for the temporary disabling as announced in the chat room. Thank you for your patience.

Agreed, Misty. Summoning is a handy tool, especially when one wants to talk to someone who has problems seeing PMs immediately (me, for example :P). As long as summoning is used properly, it is an asset to the chat room.

What if you got a pop up message when you were on and you got a PM? I don't care much for chat summoning. :P Or, you could disallow chat summoning, so it couldn't be used on people who toggled the off button in the UCP, if that's possible?

Try turning on pop-up notifications of new private messages in your UCP then. Let me know how it goes. :)

Yes, it works! Awesome! I had to set my settings on my laptop to say that I would allow pop ups from Holy Worlds, then it worked. :)

Right, you'll have to whitelist HW in your popup blocker settings, but it should work otherwise. :)

Hm. If I understand correctly, you must load another page in order to get the pop-ups from any PMs that have arrived, whereas summoning would pop-up without the loading of a page. Using PMs instead of summoning work work more easily if PMs popped up the way summoning did. Or was that part of the server drain? :P

That's exactly what makes the server drain, yes. Popups when you change pages is frequent enough, I would think.

This is just a random suggestion I'm throwing out there, but what if summons popped up in a new window like the popup pms notifications, and/or in your pm inbox.

Oh, and the pop up pms thing is working. :D

I have a solution for this that vastly reduces server load without affecting functionality; it's what we use on ArtVoyagers. I'm no longer volunteering for HW, but if somebody wants to hire me, I'm available. :)

Alrighty, I kinda expected that. :)

A few months ago I filled Jay and Andrew in on the details of this solution, so maybe they'll implement it. They haven't yet, though, so I kinda doubt they will. :P

Our funds are going to HW's upkeep at the moment.

I can vouch for the fact that Jay and Andrew have been extremely busy recently, and have worked on some other projects. Hopefully though, this will eventually be able to be done.

This probably isn't applicable anymore, but if we wanted to do away with summoning and just do PMs, it might help if the PMs would make a little pop-down like on Sci-fi. :) I find that better than having a new window come up that announces I have a PM.
