I just used the link from a somewhat-old (a couple of weeks) subscribed-topic notification [1], and hit the error message "You are not authorised to read this forum." After a moment's thought I deduced that the thread had most likely been moved to "Tricky Subjects", but it would have been nice (were this a bug-tracking system, I'd mark this as priority TRIV or WISHLIST) if the error page had explicitly said which forum I was being bounced from.

[1] (I save these notifications when I think I might want to reply to that particular post, but don't have time just then, and use them to return when I have time to consider and reply.)

It's also possible your thread was in a private forum and you somehow got signed out on your way over. I agree, it would be nice to know, sometimes. :)

That would also have been a possibility ... except that I didn't have to sign in again to post this thread :). And also that the first URL in a topic-reply or forum-post notification ("to view the newest post made since your last visit ..") forces you to log in (with a different error message), as I discovered to my frustration over and over when I kept getting logged out over and over last summer. (Fortunately, that seems to have been fixed.)

Really? As I recall, it asks you to log in if that happens.

Maybe I'm getting it mixed up then.

Yeah if you are unable to access something due to being not logged in, it asks you to log in.

More verbose error messages like that would be handy, but a bear to implement. :P
