| Post subject: | Browser-profile-specific login issue |
In my main Firefox profile (lots of add-ons, several pinned tabs, lots of other tabs, including several HW topics I want to reply to soonish in the second group), most of the time when I try to log into Holy Worlds (with or without the "log me in automatically" box checked) it tells me I've successfully logged in, then takes me back to the login screen again. If I click one of the links on the "you've logged in" page, that usually takes me either to that page with me not logged in (if it's something that one doesn't have to be logged in to view, like the list of forums) or to the login page again (if it's restricted, like the User Control Panel). This behavior started only a couple of weeks ago, and only happens in Firefox (not in ELinks, which I use for reading new posts from my email client when I get update emails, nor in other browsers I've tried)---and I recently tried a fresh Firefox profile and logging in worked there. I've tried force-logging out, emptying the Firefox cache, deleting all HW-related cookies (unless there were some without holyworlds in their domain ...) repeatedly, and so on. None of that had any effect---except that once for the first "refresh" after clearing HW-related cookies I appeared to be logged in, but refreshing again showed me the login screen again. Any ideas? |

It does the same thing to me as well, kingjon. I can usually stay logged in if I click on the "Forum Index" link, but if I wait until it redirects me to the Index page itself I'm logged out again. I also am using Firefox. |

That's not quite the same thing as me, then; when it's decided to afflict me like this (it's worse when either the network or my computer is under moderate or heavy load, but by now it happens nearly all the time regardless) clicking to the Forum Index or the UCP instead of letting it redirect me doesn't help. |

I have tried a fix. Please clear your board cookies and let me know if the problem persists. |

OK, after clearing cookies, closing the four other tabs open to HW asking me to log in (because they were open to Fireside subfora), and correcting the cookie permissions for HW from "Allow for Session" to "Allow" (on the main UI, it's "Allow Session", which I had thought meant "allow session cookies in addition to ordinary ones"), this *seems* to have at least improved. The automatic redirect still (in the three or so tries in this process since your post, with the various complicating factors mentioned above) consistently drops me back at the login prompt again, but clicking through to the Forum Index instead shows me as logged in, and opening the four Fireside subfora tabs again works (they show me those forums, not login prompts). And if you can see this, I was able to post. |

Okay, so I did some more things, and ended up kicking myself off HW, and I was not able to get back on again. So after some frenetic fiddling, I was able to get back in again on both FF and Chrome. I can now get logged in without any redirect problems anywhere. Make sure you click the Delete all board cookies link at the bottom of the Index, and clear all cookies. |

OK; I didn't know about (hadn't noticed) the "delete all board cookies" link, so I'll use that the next time Firefox decides to log me out. But this session seems to have lasted, so the original problem seems to be fixed. (Or perhaps just mutated into the one Lady Eruwaedhiel reported, but I don't want to log out again to test that at the moment. |

I confirm; the redirect issue appears to have been resolved. |

Brilliant! I changed the cookie settings, and that seems to have made things better. What's the current status of the problems now then? |

It might be because I haven't cleared my cookies (*munches cookie in the background*) but I'm still having trouble. I couldn't get logged in even after I hit the Forum Index link, and was only able to manage it by clicking the link to my private message inbox. And when I tried to clear my cookies, my browser locked up. |

| Post subject: | Re: Browser-profile-specific login issue |
My problem (see the original post in this thread) surfaced again today, when (I note in retrospect) my computer was under heavy CPU and network load (for what it's worth, I use Gentoo Linux, and had just started compiling one of the heavier of the day's updates); if this goes through (in Chrome, after both Firefox and my previously-successful-fallback-browser kept looping me back to the login page) trying again after the network load dropped back to normal worked. So for me the question becomes, why does HW alone have trouble in such conditions, and what can I do to mitigate this? |

And then, this afternoon, Firefox let me log in for sessions that lasted long enough to read one or two posts (from the "new forum post" emails) before requiring me to log in again, and then refused (along with my fallback browser) to let me log in at all ... which clearing cache plus deleting all forum cookies plus restarting the browser plus not checking the "keep me logged in" box seems to have fixed for the moment. |

Jay and I have just made some major changes to HW, and we're hoping the login problem is fixed. Initial reports seem promising, but if you're still having problems, report here: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=4078 I'm locking this thread now; carry on over there. |
