Is this a post that has been hidden by the sender? Is it a glitch? Or is it a Dieki-ism only?

Is a "hidden" chat different than a "private" chat between selected people?

It's the same thing, unless the person sends something to himself (such as a sound effect, so that it hides who did it temporarily). |

It's already set to UTF-8. (I found the way to change it in FF4 -- View > Character Encoding.) Ohh, and I CAN only see these half-posts after I refresh the page. I didn't realize that. |

Those are just private chats.  I don't know why Dieki made it so you can see half of them if the page is refreshed...

Somewhat related (if I should have made this a separate topic, I do apologize), occasionally when people are using private chat, non-private chats will not be shown and only become visible on refreshing the page. |

In other words, we suspect that secret chat generate a kind of gravitational pull that will suck nearby chats into their vortex of secretness. This would explain the oft-referred to phrase "Chat ate my post! "You know you're a crazy scifi writer when you start using gravitational fields to explain forum bugs instead of the traditional magical explanations. |

Sometimes when chat is very busy, and sometimes when people are conversing in secret chat, I've had chat posts disappear entirely and not reappear when the page is refreshed. |

It's probably because the chat doesn't like me, but I haven't been able to see people's posts for some time now. I just see a name next to a blank space. Incidentally, I can't see my posts either. |

What browser are you using, Neil? Dri said he was using IE7, which is an older browser, so it could be some quirk from older browsers....Dieki would know eru |

I'm using a recent edition of firefox. I have several ad-blocker and pop-up blocker additions running. I'm running Windows Vista. |

If you are running something like NoScript, chat will be broken. Possibly ditto for popup blockers, depends on how they work. Oh, and the reason for the half-chats is a technical limitation. Someday I'd like to redo the chat system from scratch, but until then... we'll just have to live with it.

My connection is excellent, so that shouldn't be a problem. The thing is that not being able to choose the chat is a very recent development. I haven't added any plug-ins to my browser for a long time. I'm fairly certain I'm not running NoScript. I think the pop-up blocker is just part of the ad-blocker plug-in. (Ad-Blocker Plus. It's free from the Firefox add-ons page. I'm also running another Ad-Blocker Plus script that facilitates its function on Windows, I believe.) |
