Okay guys, here is my new blog submission, it is called, The Dragon's Friend.

For all dragon lovers, may the dragon never grow extinct. Keep them alive with your pen and your ink.


In the conjures of mind is the beast set at liberty
Their race and majesty long lost in tragedy
Inspiration the air that breaths life in their wings
Visions of glory and breathless wonder still clings,

Free but for the night though their wish is always
When light of dawn ends chill morning haze
Then alas the beauty of glory days gone
As the sun breaks the mountains subverting the dawn.

As the magic is broken imagination lays at rest
mighty beast of the sky but a memory at best
Thus I beg you fair reader remain the creature’s friend
Open the page, seize up the pen, let their days of might never end.

You don't mention dragons in the poem itself, but I love how you clarify it with the title, and the poem itself may be applied to any sort of mystical fantasy beast.

Exactly! For me that majestically mystical creature is the Dragon, but it could be a griffon for someone else. I’ve dreamed about taming dragons ever since I was a very small girl (long before they were popularized by Eragon and similar works). I wanted to leave it subjective, thus I did not use dragon in the actual poem. However, I also wanted it to gently prod your mind to think of a Dragon. I was actually thinking of changing the title to aid in this idea of the poem being subjective to the reader, but I didn’t come up with anything convincing, so I left it as the title you now see it under.

This is lovely! The narrative has a majestic feel.

I didn't even notice that "dragon" wasn't explicitly mentioned in the narrative. The title set me in the mood and the words produced the vision. Strangely beautiful, that.

Only one suggestions. One, you might consider replacing "get out" in the last line with a more regal one-word term like "seize," or "take." "Get" is often a very casual word, and for some reason I think it that line might flow better if it were one word shorter. But I'm not a poet (very much), so that's just an idea that occurred to me.

The sentiment of the poem is vividly and consistently expressed in lines like "Their race and majesty long lost in tragedy" all the way to the last line, "Open the page, get out the pen, let their days of might never end".

Thank you all very much. I think I will take Phili's advice and change the last line to "seize up". It think it goes better with the tone of the poem.
