I've edited those in. I was also the one to add the modern movies category, seeing as I wasn't sure where to put Fireproof, Facing the Giants, etc. If anyone disagrees with my placement of something, just say so.

I could defend Harry Potter, but I don't really know how you would put these together with people all over the world.
Also, I loved Fireproof.

Can I suggest "Finding Nemo," to be discussed with our resident Australians? ;)

Um...I want to discuss a movie called Signs, but has anyone else seen it? If anyone else has seen it and can discuss it, I hereby nominate that movie...

Heard of it, never watched it.
Now, what do y'all think about a "thriller" movie based on a Christian book? "House", by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker, was made into a movie, and although it doesn't strictly stay true to the book, it is quite exciting and I like it.

You mean "with our" not "With out" Elizabeth, right?

(all these typos are bugging me  )

Signs was a wonderful film. It would make a great film to review. Actually, *any* film directed by M. Night Shyamalan would be marvelous. They're all very interesting, and have deep, and sometimes correct, spiritual undertones.

I love the way he's exploring philosophy through film.

House would be interesting, though the film is a bit... out there, R-rated and such. The book was okay, the film wasn't even as high quality as the book. A bit cheesy. Ted Dekker's book Thr3e was turned into quite a nice film.

It's very amusing and very rare when a typo conveys the exact opposite of the original intent of the author.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. and for a second, Eli, I thought you meant ME when you said Elizabeth.
It is, I suppose, I thought we could suggest movies for a more touchy podcast episode, or something. And yeah, kind of cheesy compared to the book.

Oh cool, someone else here has seen it! Yes, it was an awesome film, though the scariest one I've ever seen...anyway, I'd like to help discuss it if it gets picked for the podcast someday...

That is a cool idea, Lizzie. I will have to pin Aussie for that one. :D

As a side note, guys, while I can't say no, we will not do frightening movies, I can say, most emphatically, that I will not. There is enough of that kind of stuff that happens in real life, and that I know about, that I have no desire to see such things. I don't enjoy movies about children being abducted, I don't enjoy movies about a man's wife being abducted (Marine being a prime example of something I would never see, despite its name) I don't watch movies where people are abused, and I don't do freaky demonic movies. I did watch The List with my family, when it was recommended to us, and no one in our family liked it.

Maybe it is because I know, in a very real sense, that those things are real. It's not a fantasy fabrication. It really happens, and it causes a lot of trauma in the people who have been subjected to it. So I don't, and will not, watch them.

Sorry.

As to whether or not Jay would even want something like that on the podcast... I'd have to talk with him.

I just thought I’d mention that. So, for anyone who has made a suggestion that falls under this category, please mark next to your submission in the list that it is scary/questionable content/rated R- whatever you want to put that lets me know this is a movie I need to research to see if it is even a viable option for me to host. As a side note, this is, for the most part, personal conviction, and my own personal struggle to watch real atrocities televised and romanticized by Hollywood. If you have watched or seen movies with this content, then that is your right as a family and it is really no one else’s business. :D I strongly believe that families have the right to make their own choices as to what they do and no not watch. So the only reason I am bringing this up is because I cannot host the podcast with such a movie, and I’m not even sure I know where Jay stands on it.

Feel free to still post them, if you desire, and I will look into the subject.

Um...are you applying this to aliens? I'm asking because I'm not sure if Signs fits what you're talking about (and I totally understand your conviction). One thing about it is that the place we looked it up made it sound way worse than it turned out to be...I can explain how of course, but you're likely too busy just now, and maybe you don't want to trust the advocate of the movie to explain what it was like anyway (that's understandable if that's the case).

Anyway, I will go put the rating of the movie and the fact that there is a bit of swearing in it, sorry I didn't do it earlier.

Aliens are good. :D Anything Fantasy holds no issues for me because my brain says "It's not real". Sci-Fi, for the most part, with a very rare exception, is the same way. My comment was more directed at House. I know nothing about Signs. :D

Thank you, Wolf, and feel free to send me a pm about it.

Cool. :D

By the way, books are different, so the above only is in reference to movies, because visual stimulation is very different than the stimulation we have when reading. :D

Almost every movie has frightening bits (Aslan's death, Frodo and the wraiths, every scene with Lord Voldemort, etc.)... and the purpose of Shyamalan's films is hardly to frighten.

Indeed, the partially scary film, but much loved among homeschoolers and conservative Christians, The Village, is one that I cannot recommend more highly for its interesting philosophical message, and simply without-equal production values (the single prettiest score ever, period).

It's Shymalan's finest, and he's one of the finest himself.

Just wanted to say that.

Scary is not the issue, to be honest. It's the televised and romanticized Hollywoodism that runs rampant in our culture that I have a problem with. That and the desensitization of people in general via the movie industry. "Scary" just happens to fall into this more than other genres.

Like I said, I'm not saying don't post your suggestions. I will look them up and see what my sources tell me about it. I'm not saying we won't do anything that has "scary" elements. I, personally, do not find Lord of the Rings frightening in the least.. What I am saying is be prepared that there might be things that I simply cannot do myself. And I have high tolerance for things in general. :)

That was all that was meant by my post. I would just like anyone to post on a very scary (typically R rated if it's very scary) nomination that this is a possible problem.

Right... and I haven't watched the House film for just such a reason. I was just ensuring, as I now see you're mindful of, that the baby of supernatural and psychological thrillers are not thrown out with the bath water of ungodly fear and horror.

*chuckles * Nope, not at all. :) I just felt I needed to state this when House was brought up, because I won't watch House.

That being said, I have several very good friends who have watched House and loved it.

So, like I said, I think this comes down to how God has convicted you and your family. There are things my family watches that other friends of ours don't think should be watched. *shrugs *

And that is a glorious thing about convictions - they are unique to individuals.

I don't think I'd enjoy the film... wasn't my favorite Dekker/Peretti book, though it was good.

I edited The Last Sin Eater into the Historical Fiction list. It is a really great movie, has anyone else seen it? *would be willing to take part in the discussion*

I have, yes. In fact, I'm in the middle of writing up a movie review on it for FRBP.

Since the previous movie nomination was directed by M. Night Shyamalan I think I will continue the trend and nominate another one directed by him, and one of my favorite movies, Unbreakable.

“It's hard for many people to believe that there are extraordinary things inside themselves, as well as others. I hope you can keep an open mind.” - Elijah Price

David Dunn (Bruce Willis) finds himself as the lone survivor of a devastating train wreck. The doctors are awestruck because David was found in the wreckage without one broken bone, without one scratch, and they can’t explain why. He leaves the hospital suffering from survivor’s guilt and returns home to a marriage standing on its last leg.

David struggles with the questions of why did he survive? Why does he wake up every morning feeling sad? What is his place in this world? After attending the memorial service for the train wreck victims, he finds a mysterious note left by Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) who may have the answers to all of David’s questions.

Unbreakable is not an action movie but rather a slow burning character development story. Every scene is intentional, even the silence. It is a mature PG13 movie. It has very little language (I think someone counted 7 obscenities), no sex scenes, no nudity, but there are a few intense scenes of violence and some disturbing images. If you have never seen or heard of this movie then I advise not to read any reviews. Nearly every review I have read spoils it in some way or another.

Unbreakable is a drama/suspense/fantasy movie.

Since we can nominate TV shows, I nominate BBC Robin Hood. *edits in* That could spark a good discussion about historical accuracy... I also think Nairam on HF would be a good panel member for it.

Ooh! I'd love to see one on BBC Robin Hood since I have a few unflattering opinions about it.

While listening to the HTTYD podcast, I am reminded that we should do Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. :D Gracie and I would both still like to do that one, if that's an option.

^_^

If you wanted to host again, we think that would work well. It's the same three people, but the distribution of opinions is different. (With HTTYD, Gracie was the skeptic; with this, you are the one who isn't enthralled about the film.)
