Jay and I would like to implement a policy on submitting fiction for critique:

For general comments: you can post a short piece in the thread.

For line edits: upload the file to Google Docs and insert the link into your request in The Fireside.

This policy will make critiques more efficient and easier. The difficulty in format change and comment insertion within posts is the main reason for this request. I will post a Q&A thread on using Google Docs for Revision.

We talked about pros and cons for many systems and this is the best. Post here if you have any concerns or questions with this policy.

I'll address the one that we talked about longest:

"What if I'm at a library and can't upload or download files?"

This is the reason we are not using the attachment method. Google Docs requires you to upload your document, but for editing all you have to do is view the file and make comments.

Please note that this thread is explaining the system for requesting official critiques from the critique group (a group of individuals who are willing to honestly and regularly go over your work). This is not the official system for all threads potentially entering the Fireside for people's thoughts, but rather for the people that need and want specialized attention given to their pieces of work.

Tim, if it is on Google Docs can absolutely anyone see it? Or only people who you allow? I have never used it before so the only worry I have is someone stealing your work. Or is it just like Microsoft Word but a different program, so if someone did edit it they would have to add an attachment with their edits and it's all completely private still?

Thanks!

You have the option when you upload the file to make it
a) Public on the web
b) Open to anyone with the link
c) Private
"Only people explicitly granted permission can access. Sign-in required" - Google Docs.

I am working on a Q and A for How to Use Google Docs for Critiques and will link it (here) when I'm finished.

I'm excited for how these new guidelines are shaping up. Gone is the general confusion over the GoogleDocs folder. :) Thanks for posting these, Tim!

This can be locked or archived or moved or something - I don't know why it's in Tech Support at all. :?
