Ever since he was a little kid, Andrew Bridger has ALWAYS wanted to be like the supers that defended his city. ALWAYS. You see... Andy is obsessive about superpowers. And having them. He is still in the habit of running the ten mile circuit out of Crystal Fall's Neutral Zone - even though his hopes of dynamic powers within him activating because of his escape from the inhibiting powers of the zone have diminished since he figured out that the effects are most likely residual- it's just a habit. Really. And researching every known case of dynamic activation since including those people who mysteriously survived drowning in the falls of the city's namesake who disappeared mysteriously soon after? That's just a hobby. Really. And keeping track of every single Dynamic incident ever, going back to 1973's catastrophic event? He's just curious. He's being an informed citizen. And he HAS considered genetic experimentation on himself. And rejected it. Because it's gross. And because he is desperately afraid of becoming a super-villain. He's read all the stories. He knows that his path mirrors those of evil geniuses who today are always trying to hurt everybody around them. Andy doesn't want to hurt anybody. He wants to help. And he is quite aware of all his rationalizations. How villain-like they are. And he is terrified of it all. But he keeps trying. Maybe one day he can be super. But crime fighting is clearly not in his near future. He can't dodge bullets, after all. Could he? |

Andy eventually DOES take up the mantle of a superhero, but through technological means. Tired of losing every fight he gets into and of hearing "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? YOU CANNOT DODGE BULLETS!!!", he creates a "very minimalist" suit that, of course, allows him to predict the trajectory of objects and around him within a certain radius. There are a couple problems with the suit, however. It works, yes. But it's made from junkyard materials, which are quite unreliable. And knowing how fast something is moving and where exactly it is going isn't the same thing as getting out of the way in time... Andy, budding genius that he is, nevertheless is quite inept at planning, and that ineptness only appears when he actually remembers to do so. Honestly, it's his quick wit (both in mouth and in action, i.e. using mirrors and annoying the bad guy so much that he can't shoot straight), and a miracle here and there that has kept him alive. I am planning on having a personally catastrophic event that forces him to take a step closer down his perceived path to super-villainy: namely, experimenting on himself to enhance his reaction speed. This - the self-experimentation, especially in times of great stress - is (to Andy) obviously one of the last stages from scientist to evil scientist. |

That's definitely a really interesting character you have here, and I really like the conflict you've given him between his wishes and how that resembles super villainy. It adds a very nail-biting tension with the thin line he has to walk there. |

Yes, it's always good for tension in a story to force the MC to move towards their greatest fear in order achieve their goals. I also like the idea of an "ordinary person" becoming extraordinary, or discovering that she/he is already extraordinary. Good character, good plot.

A rough synopsis for my story. This should be amusing... Quote: Andy Bridger rushes headfirst into the world of super heroics - and it all goes horribly wrong. Now struggling to cope with a new disability, Andy is sent off to a school for supers and must somehow survive bullies, villains, and teachers long enough to graduate and get home. There's just one teensy-weensy little problem: he doesn't actually have any powers.

I think it'd be cool to do something in-between the style of the How To Train Your Dragon books and The Invention of Hugo Cabret, buuuuut I need to actually have a story. Still trying to figure things out.

I love everything about this. What's the new disability? Have you read the Failstate books by John Otte? He's got an interesting world of superheros/villains that might give you some ideas. And the Larklight books by Philip Reeve are illustrated very interestingly. |

That is a really cool sketch page! Check out Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book--it has a similar illustration style of b&w ink drawings bleeding onto text pages. |

The first real supervillain he faces has sonic powers and really beats him badly. He ends up losing his hearing (at least temporarily, and a later incident possibly seals the deal,) and ends up ticking a lot of people off at the school. (He hides his lack of hearing because a physical examination would reveal that he is not legitimately a dynamic. This backfires because everyone thinks he's being rude and insubordinate by not doing what he's told, but he's actually completely oblivious.) |
