FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!

Bonus points if you understood that reference... :dieshappy:

Let's talk about the ultimate form of procrastination from writing... school!

Who's going to school this year? If so, what grade are you in, or what degree are you pursuing? What are some of your classes? Are you going online or in-person?

I'm wondering because I'm in college again this year... and wondering who might be a potential study buddy. :dieshappy: I'm currently attending community college online to get my AA in history. When I transfer to get my BA, I may diverge and get a creative writing degree in addition to a history degree... But I'm really, really enjoying history, so I may just plow ahead and go for my PhD! But for now, I have two history classes (including the Bible as History--so much fun!), the obligatory philosophy class, and a creative writing class that my English teacher bribed me into attending. :D

Starting in September I'll also be back in seminary... I attend "hybrid," so I go to class when I can and watch online when I can't. This is my first time in "second year" classes, so, that'll be exciting!

I know this is like several months late, but I was bored, so I thought I'd post anyway.

I'm 10th grade and homeschooled, to answer your questions. However, my homeschooling isn't online, it's mostly just me reading textbooks and such. My history/literature/theology is rolled into one subject called Omnibus, and I will say it is by far my hardest subject, requiring 1-2 papers a week and literal hundreds of pages of reading each day. It's really not that bad though, as I enjoy the majority of the books I read for it (although some are very dull) and I honestly don't mind writing the papers (although there are definitely times where I honestly have no clue where I stand on the topic question or how to prove my stance if I do have one). I kind of have a love-hate relationship with it though, as it just takes an incredibly long time to get done each day. Still, I'm not complaining because it is enjoyable (for the most part). Plus, I want to major in history, which I know will be tons of reading and probably a lot of papers.

Some of my other classes are physics (which I am absolutely LOVING. Much more my cup of tea than biology and chemistry  ), Latin (yeah I was actually failing Spanish so we switched, as I'd taken a year of Latin in middle school and thoroughly enjoyed it), vocab, formal logic (quite possibly my least favorite subject), and pre-calc (not my favorite math, but it's not bad).

Those may have been way more detailed answers than you wanted, but that's kind of my forte haha.

Well, if you want to complain about writing assignments, I've got a couple.

1. Write tests for Perl code when you haven't had time to learn the DSL being used and the test works for one thing but not another. The failing test is a clone of the working test, two words changed to things that should work. Arrgghhh!!!!!!

2. Write a combination Power Point slide deck and white paper to convince people you don't know (but who have "VP" or "Director" in their titles) that the project is hosed but you know how to fix it. The balance is being blunt enough that they are motivated to act and polite enough that they don't throw you out the door.

I've graduated but still have to learn stuff every day. Not because I'm young and moving into my career but because I'm as old as some of your grand-fathers and want to mentally thrive. For me "First day of school" is 0400, every day.

Oh I'm so sorry if you took my post as a complaint! I didn't mean for it to come across that way (I just went back and tried to edit it to not come off as complaining :) ). And I will say I will take my writing assignments over the ones you described any day, because those sound awful o.O

Your post was fine, dear. :) As for more important matters... You want to be a history major? <adopts you> :dieshappy:

Yes, my first college history professor warned me: Do not pursue a history degree unless you want to commit to a life of reading! But even if sometimes certain books can be tedious, I think we all agree that, at the end of the day, we don't mind reading... :)

No worries! Really!

"Well, if you want to talk about..." an old conversation mechanism to join in. In this case I was sympathizing with you while pointing out that we share some of the same struggles. "Complain" instead of "talk" because I used to complain about homework. :)

Ok good. I just wanted to make sure because I know things I say often come as complaints when I don't mean them that way. :)

YES!! I absolutely LOVE history. I could literally talk about for hours. I want to be a high school history teacher (and I volleyball coach), so I want to major in history and then get a master's of education :)

And definitely! I've read some books in Omnibus that were definitely things I don't really ever want to read again (The Code of Hammurabi and The Rule of St. Benedict), to name a couple specific ones), but for the most part I find them all fascinating! My main problem is that my book shelf isn't big enough to hold all of the books I want to save after reading them for Omnibus haha

I hate to break it to you, my dear, but one thing they do NOT teach you in college is how to handle your book collection... That is one thing that never gets better... :bawl: ;) :book:

Code mostly fixed and pushed up. Slide deck and whitepaper done and accepted by local project manager. Found out the contract I'm on is likely extended for a year. Bought a cheap electric guitar as I've wanted to play since teen hood. Taking some classes and watching training videos on coding, so I'm "back in school" yet again. :book:

Many schools don't teach you how to learn. I had to figure it out on my own, and it was slow going.

Yeah, although I think my mom has done a really good job of teaching us how to learn. I mean, I teach myself pretty much everything just by reading the textbooks, and we've read books like How to Read a Book (ugh I hated that book so much...). I think that is a really good thing about homeschooling. I hope so, anyway. I generally really enjoy school though :D

In college, books are like dust bunnies. Look away and next thing you know, there's twice as many books under your bed as when you started and you don't remember where most of them originated from.

I'm only in high school and I already feel that way, so it'll be interesting to see what happens in college lol

And then you have college professors in your major who keep recommending good reading material... even though you told them to stop...
