Post subject:  Your Favorite Novel

I haven't seen this thread around, so if it exists elsewhere, feel free to merge them.

The question is this: What is your favorite fiction novel ever, and why is it your favorite? It can be anything--fantasy, historical, sci-fi, mystery, etc.

Have fun!

Hmm....I don't think I have a novel that is my FAVORITE. I have several that I really enjoyed though.

:book: :book: :book:

The Star Trek: Destiny Trilogy Comprised of Gods of Night, Mere Mortals, and Lost Souls. The Destiny Trilogy was, quite simply, an excellent science fiction and Star Trek story, not to mention, an excellent story in general. Juggling together politics, starship and ground battles, ethics, morals, and telling an epic tale all the while, the fact that the author - or later novels - makes mention of or uses all current characters from the Star Trek series' - TNG, DS9, VOY, SCE, NF, and more - made this trilogy very enjoyable for me.

Eye of the Oracle - Book one in the first sequel series to Dragons in Our Midst, I enjoyed this novel It has to be a novel - the thing was 500-some pages due to its being an excellent prequel Though there may have been some sequel in it too, making it an interquel, I think to DIOM while setting the story up for the rest of the series, Oracles of Fire.

:book: :book: :book:

More to come later, probably.

Oh my, that's a tough one!

My absolute favourite would probably be Lord of the Rings. But I am a big fan of C J Sansom, and I love all his books. Out of Historical Fiction, his Shardlake series would definitely be my favourite.

From the fantasy genre, it would definitely be The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Legends of the Guardian-King. Oh, and The Chronicles of Prydain. :D

From the historical fiction genre, I love The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Second Mrs. Giaconda, I, Juan de Pareja, The Trumpeter of Krakow, and those written by Elizabeth George Speare, Elois Jarvis McGraw...and I'm probably going to add more books to this list. :dieshappy:

EDIT: Add Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster and the Anne of Green Gables Series by L.M. Montgomery. :D

Hey! You like most of the same books! Except for:
Quote:
The Legends of the Guardian-King
Which I haven't read, it is for older people, XD.

I also like the 80 AD series by Aiki Flinthart, Percy Jackson and the Olympians series (Including The Heroes of Olympus) by Rick Riordan, View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg, The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, Red Rock Mysteries by Jerry Jenkins and Cris Fabry, The Boggart by Susan Cooper, Inheritance Cycle (Well the first two mostly) by Christopher Paolini. I think I named it all. :)

Whew. Favorite books.... Well, Riddle of Stars by Patricia Maclachlan is one. It's the one that comes to mind instantly whenever someone says 'favorite book'. Never, by Grace Pennington, is another. A Tangled Web by L M Montgomery. Mm, how about I make a list.

Riddle of Stars (Patricia Maclachlan) – It's the only book (or movie) that has ever made me cry. I will only mention that because there are too many other good things about it to start on.

Never (Grace Pennington) – It's realistic and touching and the characters are really good.

A Tangled Web (L M Montgomery) – The prose is beautiful, the characters are wonderful, and the plot line is intriguing. Besides some of that inexpressible something that Riddle of Stars has so much of...and that I have yet to really define. :P

The Narnian Chronicles (C S Lewis) – The prose is awesome. The imagery and the symbolism is staggering. And besides that they're plain loveable.

George MacDonald's books – all of them. :D Some of my favorite's are Malcolm, What's Mine's Mine, and Heather and Snow, though.... His books are deeply philosophical and metaphysical, and his characters are stunning.

I'll probably be back with more if I find the time. :)

Post subject:  Re: Your Favorite Novel

For fantasy I would have to say 'The Lord of the Rings.' I read it in when I was twelve, and it completely captured my imagination, catapulting my mind into an entire, breath taking world. I've read it four times since then.

For sci-fi it is 'Redemption Ark' by Alistair Reynolds. This book is a work of art, with a dark, deadly threat from the depths of space threatening to consume all of known space, and several groups/factions vying to unlock a secret that should remain secret.

God bless
Peter

Aw, man! My favourite novel? I can't have just one, obviously, and most of my favourite books are in a series... does that matter?

*will list them anyway*

Trixie Belden series - Julie Campbell Tatham and various other authors (Kathryn Kenny)

Ranger's Apprentice series - John Flanagan

Isle of Swords series - Wayne Thomas Batson

Caddie Woodlawn* (I think there is a sequel *wants to get* ) - Carol Ryrie Brink

A Pony in the Field* - Marion Doren

The Doll Hospital* - Ann M Sharp & Laurance Splitter

Christy (adapted version) series - Catherine Marshall

Detectives in Togas & The Roman Ransom - Henry Winterfield

The Swipe series (most recent *can't wait until the 3rd comes out on May 7th!!) - Evan Angler

And... that's about all I can think of off the top of my head. :D Will be back with more. :salute:

*These are books I used to read when I was younger, but are still a favourite. :)

Just a warning, there's some unsavory language, but I think not as much until you hit the 5th book.

The Auralia Thread series by Jeffrey Overstreet

The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss

Everything by Tim Downs

When Heaven Weeps, Heaven's Wager, Obsessed, Blink of an Eye, The Bride Collector, by Ted Dekker.

See, I can't choose just one.

Note on the language: It's not too strong, but it's characteristic of "typical Australianese" (just not my kind :x).

Favourite book? I have a couple, but on the very top, is The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. The characters, the plot, the setting, the pacing, the writing; everything about it is absolutely brilliant. I can't count how many times I've read it. ^_^

Other favourites are "A Little Bush Maid" by Mary Grant Bruce, "Mara: Daughter of the Nile" by Eloise Jarvis McGraw, "Ranger's Apprentice" by John Flanagan, and The Darkness books by Frank Peretti.

I do read books with bad language in sometimes, so as long as there isn't tons of it and all, it will be okay for me. Thanks for the warning, I appreciate it! :)

(I tend to handle language better when it's not in children's books...that's a pet peeve.)

My favorite currently (excluding Tolkien and Lewis, because I consider them 'givens') is:

The Wingfeather Saga, by Andrew Peterson. On the Edge of a Dark Sea of Darkness, North! Or be Eaten, Monster in the Hollows, and the upcoming Book #4(whose title is a spoiler.) Absolutely wonderful Christian Fantasy for everyone. The books get better and better as they go. It's one of the few book-stories that I fangirl over. XD Also the series of books that taught me it's good to cry over a good story.

Love a lot of the ones mentioned before, like LotR, the Hobbit, Narnia, Ranger's Apprentice, Anne of Green Gables, also:
East - by Ediith Pattou (a take on the folk tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon")
Sherlock Holmes (all of them!)
Eragon/Inheritance Cycle
I also like Jack London (Call of the Wild, etc.), Jane Austin, Dianna Wynne Jones (lots of fantasy), Harry Potter (don't stone me!), The Black Stallion series and Black beauty (children's lit), and John Milton (just betrayed myself as a nerd there! though I haven't read nearly everything of his yet).
I'm always looking out for more to add to this list too :book:

Post subject:  Re: Your Favorite Novel

Wow, I have read so much this past year; I love reading more, but it definitely makes it much harder defining a favourite novel.

My favourite book series at the moment is by Karen Marie Moning, her Fever series. There is definitely some questionable content in her books, and I wouldn't say they were for young readers at all. However, I love her characters, and I am easily lost in her writing. That said, I prefer the first books from the series more than her latest ones; but I definitely want to see how the story ends, so I'm persevering.

Another writer that I discovered last year was Jeaniene Frost. She's actually a Christian author, however again some of the content of her books is not for young readers. I am really enjoying her 'Halfway to the Grave' Cat and Bones series. She writes in first person, and I usually find that annoying, but it is extremely well done. I don't find it off-putting at all.

Calico Bush, or The Night Land. In Calico Bush I love Margaret. The Night Land has a lot of issues but I love it too much in general to cast it out. It's a gorgeous epic, and regardless of its stiff quality, questionably ethical female/male relations--though I'm not referring to unchastity--and lengthiness, I do love it.

I can't even speak about LotR or Narnia because I've read them too often to be able to judge my opinion. ^_^
