I thought it might be nice to have a thread for discussing what we're studying in Scripture, and what we're getting out of it. I love being in the Word, and I love hearing what others are getting out of it that I might not have seen from my perspective.

I've been going through Psalms recently, and thought the third psalm was interesting when read aloud. It starts out upset, but then there is a Selah pause. From there, the verses take on a more comforted tone. To me, it felt as though God were given a chance to respond in that musical interlude or rest. There is a time of being reassured before David continues his musical prayer. It was a huge encouragement to me. When I pray and am distraught, I can take a deep breath. Selah.

There's seriously no way I was referring to you. Honest.

I quite agree!

I've been reading through James as of late. Just a quote from one of my favorite chapters:

Chapter 1 wrote:
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

One of my studies flipped back to Genesis briefly, but I got a really neat image in my head of Jacob after God sends him a vision of heaven. (I figure it needed to be in his sleep, because he was terrified as it was when he woke up). He is so overwhelmed, but I could just feel the awe and wonder in his words after. Just looking around at the place where God moved; condescended to talk to him, when he has never been first in anyone's heart. He is shell-shocked with awe and wants to do something for the Lord in return.

I'm at the end of John just now, and the sour wine given to Jesus stood out to me. My Bible has a footnote that said that gall is poison. I know I have heard similar things before, but it struck a cord this time. How often do I try to find something I can get out of my "selflessness," or try to stop short of self-sacrifice so that someone else will do their own work, learn to behave, or see the value in what I do? Yet my Lord would not even allow His physical pain to be numbed as He was suffocating in agony because of me.
