Celebrate is a strong word for me (not that I don't celebrate things, or that I have a theological difference with celebration). I observe the church calendar to some degree, and love things that guide the mind towards the things of Christ.

From what I find about the "Persian" government of the period it's certainly conceivable that at least one of the "magi" might have been a "king"; my take on the passage is that this is the one known instance in human history when astrological divination was one-hundred-percent right and this wasn't by coincidence

We have a pretty long celebration of Christmas, starting with St. Nicholas Day when we do the stockings (though an Advent wreath reading usually comes before that, and we start listening to some Christmas songs after Thanksgiving), and ending with Epiphany (when we eat biryani, a Persian rice dish).
Jason Lisle's theory was that they were Babylonians of the school of Daniel, since there was a prophecy in one of Daniel's other writings that a star would rise out of Israel - and Balaam prophesied something similar when he said, "There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel." So it was probably prophecy rather than divination, though I do wonder about God saying in Genesis that the stars would be for signs.

Prophetically-informed divination, certainly, and records from Daniel being available to them are a very reasonable assumption. But to me "We saw his star in the east definitely suggests divination.

The "... for signs" applies to "lights in the firmament" in general, and to me the sun and moon being used to determine the timing of events in the calendar seems a sufficient explanation of that verse

I wondered if Joseph were playing a part with the divination thing, so that his brothers wouldn't suspect that he knew about them because he was spying or actually knew them.
It's also possible that Daniel knew of the star, and the magi knew how to track star patterns in answer to the prophecy. I do know there is something to what sorcery practices can actually do, so I don't know if they could be a counterfeit for something the Lord would let us use, but there could also be other explanations.

Another interesting thing is that when Balaam would go to receive a prophecy from God it was referred to as "seeking for enchantments", and Daniel was referred to as a magician (though that was the same word as "magi" wasn't it?).
