Rules: (more like guidelines, really)
  1. Each Participant starts their own thread and adds a reference to the thread here.
  2. Except where Participants agree to cooperate.
  3. Each week a Prompter will provide a generic but varied story prompt.
  4. Each Participant will integrate the prompt into their story.
  5. Participants can post when they see fit.
  6. Participants wishing critique will create and point to a feedback thread so the story stays organized.
  7. Prompts that just do not work can be amended by the Participant.

"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." Matt 18:20 (NIV)

Prompt Challenge: Something terrifying.

The character may be helping someone who is terrified, be attacked by something terrifying (in-laws?), or whatever.

This one has been on my mind for a bit.

Ok I think I might try to do this, but I have a question first: if I don't have time to do it one week, am I allowed not to post that week? Or is it a thing where if you commit your fully committed? I think I'm going to make it a different story than my WIP if I do it, but I don't want to prioritize it over them.

Well, my plan for character development has been set aside for the moment, as I got a sudden spark of inspiration for a draft I had laid aside. (And that my mom has been really wanting me to finish ;) ) I may go ahead and post another story thread later, or I may just use this for my weekly foray into Huargia!

Up at the top is a URL button that generates something like this [ url ][ /url ]

If you place the link between the [ url ] [ /url ] ... like this
... [ url ] https: // holyworlds. org/ viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10161 [ /url ] ... you will get a normal link like this

https://holyworlds.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10161

However, you can also add an “=“ to the [ url ] like this
... [ url = https: // holyworlds. org/ viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10161] INSERT ANY TEXT YOU WANT IN HERE [ /url ] ... and get a link like this

INSERT ANY TEXT YOU WANT IN HERE

(Note that I added a lot of spaces to prevent the command from executing in the samples, do not add extra spaces just “url=https:” and all the rest.)

The determining factor is "What brings you the most joy and peace?" Don't feel guilty if you can't post one week, or post as much as someone else. You are a writer, write as you are created.

One of my personal goals is to enrich the Domici War milieu. So far everything has been centered on one or two small slices of society and on a couple planets. I want the setting to be as rich as Lord of the Rings and as "special" as Harry Potter. Doing fan fiction in my own setting will help me reach that goal.

Prompt challenge #2 Bring in a friend. Your protagonist can spark a new friendship, an existing friend can show up, or if those don't work he could even remember an absent or lost friend. It is good to have a friend after experiencing something terrifying. "Two are better than one... if one falls his friend can help him up." Ecclesiastes 4:10a,11a :)

Oh, COOL! I had a very loose idea of a "friend" in mind for Jimmie, but hadn't given it a lot of though. This will push me into that. :dieshappy:

Posted! I didn't get quite as far as I wanted, but it's something. :)

Also, I'm glad the prompt came at a good time in your story!

Prompt Challenge #3: We all have those "big dream" goals; WHY does the character have that goal?

"Yet the desires of my heart turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near." Job 17:11b-12

Hmmm... this will be a fun one to consider... I know a goal she has, but I'm not entirely sure it's the one the story is about... Tugging the string of "why" should uncover that.

Also, this Saturday I probably won't be able to post the next prompt until the evening, unless I get excited and post Friday night.

The post schedule is yours; do what works best. I'm usually impatient by mid-Wednesday. :)

Oddly, though, the "Why" wasn't what I had planned as a challenge. Something close, but in a different area. It'll be fun to dive deeper into Jimmie since I only know a little but of his goal. A few more things have surfaced and I'm enjoying it.

Ack! Running out the door after what was supposed to be thirty minutes to get my writing edited/posted, and add the next prompt...

Prompt challenge #4: Show your character (or let him experience) an echo of the main antagonistic force. It can be a memory, a rumor, or a minor inconvenience because of something only affects him marginally... but give some hint that shows this is bigger than he realized.

Alright, hopefully that made sense!

Still working on Jimmie. But, the challenge must go on! This is a little early but tomorrow may get hectic.

Prompt Challenge #5: Reveal something about the best, or worst, day of a character's life.

Saturday snuck up on me! I'm off to complete this week's challenge, and should be back today with a prompt of my own. :-)

Alright, I have completed the last two prompts... and basically gotten to the end of my kernel idea... So...

Prompt Challenge #6: Set something on fire. Even if it's just a candle. Or your character. I was thinking metaphorically with that last one. ;)

Ok, so that was just completely random. Hopefully that will spark something given a day or two to marinate. ;)

Well, Jimmie is in the engine room of an ill maintained starship...

I'll see what I can do about keeping him alive. Nice challenge!

While it had occurred to me that Domici would have no problem starting a fire in his setting... it had not occurred to me exactly how hazardous that would be... *Is suddenly very concerned for Jimmy and and his companions*

Thanks for sharing that series! I think I know what my evening entertainment will look like for the next few days, if I can keep myself from watching them all tonight!

@Kingjon, I laughed so hard when we reached episode 8! It was an exact quote! Thanks for sharing that. :D

I shall enjoy figuring out how to use this latest prompt... :)

Did it! I realized today that I probably wouldn't have internet the rest of this weekend, so...

Prompt Challenge #8: Bestow an unexpected blessing, stroke of good fortune, or happy coincidence! :) Because sometimes our characters need a bit of a break... even if the reprieve only serves to make everything else look darker in comparison.

Story Prompt #9 Use one or more of the previous prompts to demonstrate how the character's life has been significantly changed.

Many things happen around us, significant things change us. Hopefully for the better. How has your character grown or fallen due to outside events?

Confession time... On our trip this weekend I got really impatient to show this story to my Mom... so I finished the first draft... (It is relatively short) I'm revising it now, and hopefully sending it to beta readers Monday, so would it be ok for me to still follow the same posting pattern, just using your prompts to give me ideas as I revise?

(Oh, and she was very excited and surprised! :dieshappy: )

Glad your mom liked your writing!

So, let me confess. If you read the on-line draft "Ought Five and One Two Three" you'll see a noted lack of conflict in the early part. The same was in my first version of Book 1, writing conflict is something I really have to work at. Others had to encourage (prod) me to do so but the books are much better for it.

Do what's best and enjoy life.

Thanks! I guess what I'll do for now is post the remaining chapters serial-style. :)

Story prompt #10 Reveal great ability in a character, whether it is your MC or a minor character.

Needless to say, that has to do with the next bit of my story. :)

Needless to say, that has to do with the next bit of my story. :)

Nice! I've had a scene sort of in mind, you ready to learn more about "the woman"? :P

Story Prompt #11: Add a plot twist.

Okay, this one will be tough for me since Jimmie is still figuring out what all is going on. I have some ideas though.

D: A brilliant way to keep from revealing "her" identity...

Story Prompt #12 Take something the character usually loves, and make them dread it. Or vice versa, take something the character usually hates, and make them love it. (This doesn't have to be a permanent change of mind.)

There, I didn't forget! My plan of doing it first thing in the morning didn't quite come to fruition, though...

Getting an early start.

Story Prompt #13: Discuss food with details that reveal something about the setting or the character.

Ok, this is a really random story prompt as I haven't gotten on Holy Worlds this week... or followed last week's prompt... Today was going to be my catch-up day, but then we went yard sale-ing! One of my favorite finds was a 100% cashmere scarf that was made in Scotland!!! :shock:It was really fun, but pretty much obliterated my Holy Worlds time before leaving to prepare for/sing at a concert. :)

Story Prompt #14: Involve an animal. (In either conversation or real life.)

I guess tomorrow morning I'll have to figure out how to catch up in my actual writing! :)

Err..."random" story prompts are meant to be random. At least for me they provide something totally not in my usual train of thought. That's a good thing, it keeps us out of a rut.

The "food" prompt came when I was hungry. :)

Yikes! I lost track of days and have gotten behind. Will catch up Monday.

Story Prompt #15: Something with or about a foreign language.

You and me, both... I did take Lensbearers back out today, but I had forgotten about a few other deadlines. I'm hoping to get a nice chunk of writing time in the next few days!

Story Prompt #16: What is the best news your character could receive?

(As far as random story prompts go, I had been basing them on where my train of thought was going. Being this far separated from my story is helping me to write more truly random prompts. I'm looking forward to where the story wanders off to!)

Remember how "set something on fire" went? I'm doing the "involve an animal" right now. Hopefully the character lives long enough to have some good news...

Oh no, not again! :0 Getting to work on Lensbearers now! (I'm not allowing myself to read your story until I'm caught up. ;) )

Well, I had time to get the last snippet of the draft to book one on... it didn't really follow any of the prompts, though. I guess those will be for book 2! (Which I will start today if I have time before VBS!) :dieshappy:

Story Prompt 17: Discuss a color in a significant way.

And I really need to get these out the door earlier...

I have the workings of two prompts (#s 13 and 14) ready to post, and already I`ve started to fill out the world and setting a bit. It`s really exciting, as I may be able to incorporate some of that setting info in book one as I revise! :dieshappy:

Anyway, here is today's prompt:
Story prompt #17: Travel to a new location.

Story Prompt #19: Involve a deadline. Is currently trying to beat the deadline for uploading placement auditions for string camp... I still have one hour and 30 minutes...
