Post subject:  Anybody up to play a tabletop RPG?

I've recently been poking around the role-playing games Stack Exchange (http://rpg.stackexchange.com/) and getting much too interested in trying one myself. I already have too many hobbies, but the idea of collaboratively telling a story in a structured way, with some randomness thrown in, is very appealing! The problem is that I live in a very isolated situation where I couldn't go find a gaming group to watch or join (even if I/my parents were comfortable with that option!). I could try playing with my sister, we've been doing "pretending games" together even before she could talk :) but she hates change, and I suspect that she will just get annoyed at all the extra rules in a formal RPG and want to go back to our old, very free-form system. I also suspect that it will be less interesting with just the two of us. So I was wondering if any of you play tabletop RPGs, and if so, if you'd be interested in doing an online game with a newbie :)

I downloaded the rulebooks for Fate and have been perusing them, and that system certainly seems interesting...If my understanding is right, Fate's system is quite different from, say, D&D's...but really I would be interested in trying just about anything. And I would love to even just watch some others play a game if that would work out. :)

I don't think I have the time for such an endeavor, but it sounds like a very good idea :)

I like it.

On another note, if you have a minecraft account, minigames on that would work as well.

Nope, I don't play Minecraft, unfortunately.

I was thinking that if this works out, we could use a site like http://roll20.net or even just Skype to play in real time. But my time zone might be inconvenient. :)

Cards against humanity is always open, though that's probably 18+ only, since...well... it's cards against humanity.

Yeah, I don't think I would go for that. And I think it's more a card game than a RPG...

Alternatively, we can purchase Garry's Mod and play the minigames Death Run, Murder, TTT and Prop Hunt.

(see popular markiplier videos of the games on youtube)

Incidentally, there's also This.

I'm not sure if I made myself clear in my first post; I'm hoping to try playing a pen-and-paper, tabletop RPG, e.g. like Dungeons & Dragons - not a computer game, not a board game, not a card game. :)

Anyways, I would still love to try one or watch one if somebody is interested.

I'm not familiar with Fate, but I'd be up for giving it a shot.

I'm in the same position. I've always been curious about RPGs, but I live in the boonies and don't know anyone who plays. If there are enough people, I would be fascinated to join.

Sounds great! Varon, if there's another RPG you're more familiar with, I would be happy to try a different one. I looked at Fate because it's fairly popular, the rulebooks are free, and it's pretty story-driven, but I'm definitely open to other options.

Fate should work, especially with free rulebooks. Free rulebooks are good.

I'd be up for it, possibly; if I could find the time and you didn't mind constant questions and mistakes from a slow-to-comprehend kid like me. :)

[[Also, a note to anyone who's considering clicking the Markiplier link... he tends to curse sometimes. VenturianTale is a YouTube Christian group of four siblings who play most of the same Gmod games (Trouble in Terrorist Town, Hide and Seek, Murder, Prop Hunt, etc.), but with consistently clean language. :D Just a heads-up.]]

I'd be interested, though, I've never played Fate and I'll have to figure out my unmade time schedule. :D

Hey, I'm in just the same boat. :)

So, I think it would be best to play an RPG together in real-time, all getting on Skype or Roll20 at the same time. (Any other thoughts on this?) I have a pretty open schedule (homeschooling FTW!), though I'm in an unusual time zone for HW - GMT +3. If you're in America, morning and late night for you is when I'm free. And it doesn't need to be a weekend - as long as the time is not when I'm eating, I can generally move what I'm doing around so I have some time on a weekday. (Besides, my weekend is different from the Western weekend.) Do you know what kinds of times would work for you guys? I'm thinking it would be wise to find an actual time that would work before we start planning out what we're going to do...then hopefully we won't come up with something awesome and then realize that we can't actually play it together...

Scheduling aside, you could look at a Fate rulebook (see http://www.evilhat.com/home/fate-core-downloads/) if you wanted and see what it's like. The Fate Accelerated rulebook is only 50 pages, so it's not too big, but also the 300-page Fate Core book has a lot more information, explanation, etc. Or you could see if there's some other RPG you'd be interested in.

And by the way, I don't mean to be pushy or bossy here (I'm just eager to make this happen!), so no pressure to follow through with your interest if it doesn't work out for you, and feel free to bring up any other ideas you have. :)

I don't really have the bandwidth to do anything realtime other than chatroom... At the same time, PM or thread based RPGs haven't gone very far here... Maybe a collective Facebook or G+ chat?

I don't have a Facebook or Google+ account, so I'd prefer something else, but if it works best for everyone else I can figure something out. My experience with Skype (and many friends' experience) has been that it works pretty well even with low bandwidth. Roll20 SAYS it works with low bandwidth, but who knows for sure :) At any rate, we could always do it over text chat instead of using audio (even if that's just what somebody is more comfortable with).

Mornings would work for me, in pretty much every day except Sunday and Fridays, since those are when I have church and a class respectively. Rest of the week I have class and work in the afternoons and evenings. I'm in GMT-5.
