Writers, what do you do when you've totally lost your motivation to write? I feel like I've been stuck in a rut for the past year and I can't seem to get motivated again. Anytime I attempt to begin writing something I just totally lose my enthusiasm. What do you do when you find yourself in this situation? :(

I just try to get words out anyway. I'll hate them at the time, but I'd rather write garbage I can revise instead of nothing. That, or I go crochet.

I lock myself out of the internet, and force myself to get going with my writing. I also brainstorm about character personalities, my world, etc. (Or go to the HW Chat room ;) )

I set aside whatever project is stumping me and work on an exciting concept or something instead. Sometimes drawing random scenes will give me the inspiration I need.

I have often heard that is a good practice. Go ahead and write something even if you think it's terrible. At least then you are writing something and it could lead to a better idea later on.

Personally it works best for me when I read my old writings, get frustrated or excited about them, then continue on writing, whether if it is good or bad.

For me, I pray to God for help in that area, so He always helps me with staying motivated to keep writing.

I find brainstorming with people, especially my Mother, reignites my motivation. Mother always has awesome ideas, and we bounce thoughts around and when I go back to writing, I feel like I have so much choice and new ideas to write. It never fails to motivate me. :)

Well I have experienced this when I have worked on something for so long, then I take a break and its almost like that my joy of writing was taken from me....like my project became a burden, is this what you feel? Sometimes it can be the Lord moving you to listen to him more, a season for your writing...or it might be the enemy trying to prevent you from finishing something that will touch someones life when they read it. Pray and seek the Lord, don't think about it quiet your mind, so you can hear him clearly. Also watch or read something to get your enthusiasm going again! This helped me rekindle the fire for my story....hope this helps, I will keep you in prayer about the situation. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help :)

Love and Blessings to ya and don't worry over it, it makes things worse.. ;)
Trust the Lord COMPLETELY in your heart and mind too :)

In Writing to Sell (which was published before computers were common tools for authors, let alone the Internet, so take from it what you will) literary agent Scott Meredith described what he did whenever an author (in his "stable") came in claiming to be in a "slump" and begging for an advance on royalties: he would promise an advance if the author would give him the beginning of a salable story, then lock the author in a room with a typewriter. There would be much moaning and complaining about how the author, being in a slump, couldn't do it---and then, eventually, he would sit down to write, and the "slump" would be cured.

That book also contained suggested advice for how to get back "into" a story after being away from it for awhile: retype, or if that proves insufficient, destroy and recreate from memory, the last page or so of the draft.

Locking myself off the internet would not work since... I write on the internet. And people are on the internet! People help me write.

Probably the best thing would be to tell someone, talk to someone, ask advice.
Or read or watch something that has been said about what you are writing, so that you can think in response to it. If you are writing a letter, read something they wrote to you, if you are writing an article, read an article on the same subject (especially one that disagrees with you), if you are writing a story, read something you have already written on it, go over what you have already worked out, or research about some part of it (research about werewolves if you are writing about werewolves for instance, or find recordings of actual wolves howling).

I also find it easier to write on paper, and not on my laptop. When I write on my laptop I find I can be easily distracted, so I never write on my laptop anymore. Definitely helps keep me focused.
