Lady Heather wrote: :book: So when I am writing I have two- three scenes happening at once...should I put a border in the middle between these scenes? or should I leave a blank space between scenes? Opinions and advice much appreciated. I think it would depend on the border. You wouldn't want the indicators to be distracting, but they can help the reader notice the switch in plot more readily. I just leave a blank space, but that's just cause I don't know if I'll add a border later on. It's completely up to you though |

You can just put a few spaces in between, but some times those can get lost or you can forget there was supposed to be a scene change there. Standard scene breaks include a row of astricks: *** or, in the publishing industry, a pound sign: # |

I generally just do a double-paragraph break, and am used to seeing that in books. Borders are also common and can be done, but, at least in my opinion, double paragraph breaks work as well. |

In books---the final printing that readers will buy and hold in their hands---a blank line between paragraphs, which I learned to call a "typographical break," is traditional, though some books use a symbol of some kind instead. In a manuscript, this should be indicated more explicitly, by a row of three asterisks or a pound sign. (In the old days when a manuscript would go to "the printers" to be typeset, a row of three asterisks or a pound sign would signal them to insert a typographical break.) |
