I read this quote today by Augusten Burroughs;

Quote:
Don’t hang around with people who are negative and who are not supportive of your writing. Make friends with writers so that you have a community. Hopefully, your community of writer friends will be good and they’ll give you good feedback and good criticism on your writing but really the best way to be a writer is to be a writer.

Do you have friends, or family even, who are negative about your writing? How do you cope/deal with it? Does it bother you, or do you just brush it off?

I have never had to deal with negative people (just negative monkeys ;) ). I do have a thought though, about two or three years ago I started learning harmless magic, I loved it, too much. All my spare time I took to learn more, I hardly ever spent time with my family except for at dinner and then one day my father talked to me about how much time I spent doing it and his opinion on me learning magic. So I quit. Now I have so much more time with my family!

This is just a rough example but what I'm trying to get at is that we don't have to quit writing but if some (such as a parent or sibling or friend) talks negatively about how much time your writing, it might be a good idea to slow down and spend time with people while you still can.

Sorry, I think I took this quote for a spin! :blush:

I think you have a good point, Sir I.... In striving to be good writers we can't forget about being good other things too, like good friends, and good sons or daughters, and good christians. I think the quote needs to be tempered a bit – some negativity may be necessary to realize your correct priorities, even if it's uncomfortable.

And the quote does have a good point... negativity about your work and such has a bad effect on it, and on motivation to do it. Even if you do just brush it off as best you can. :/ Sometimes, if it's your family, like, you can't really avoid them, though. I think the best solution would be just to avoid talking about it with them a lot.

I haven't had this problem much, though. :) My family are very supportive of my writing, everyone in their own way, and most of my friends are too, even those who aren't writers themselves.
