I read this quote today by Augusten Burroughs; Quote: Don’t hang around with people who are negative and who are not supportive of your writing. Make friends with writers so that you have a community. Hopefully, your community of writer friends will be good and they’ll give you good feedback and good criticism on your writing but really the best way to be a writer is to be a writer. Do you have friends, or family even, who are negative about your writing? How do you cope/deal with it? Does it bother you, or do you just brush it off? |

I have never had to deal with negative people (just negative monkeys This is just a rough example but what I'm trying to get at is that we don't have to quit writing but if some (such as a parent or sibling or friend) talks negatively about how much time your writing, it might be a good idea to slow down and spend time with people while you still can. Sorry, I think I took this quote for a spin! |

Sir Iarrthoir Criost wrote: I have never had to deal with negative people (just negative monkeys I think you have a good point, Sir I.... In striving to be good writers we can't forget about being good other things too, like good friends, and good sons or daughters, and good christians. I think the quote needs to be tempered a bit – some negativity may be necessary to realize your correct priorities, even if it's uncomfortable. This is just a rough example but what I'm trying to get at is that we don't have to quit writing but if some (such as a parent or sibling or friend) talks negatively about how much time your writing, it might be a good idea to slow down and spend time with people while you still can. Sorry, I think I took this quote for a spin! And the quote does have a good point... negativity about your work and such has a bad effect on it, and on motivation to do it. Even if you do just brush it off as best you can. Sometimes, if it's your family, like, you can't really avoid them, though. I think the best solution would be just to avoid talking about it with them a lot. I haven't had this problem much, though. |
