Do you edit your own stories? If you do, what methods do you use?

I usually run through the story (Splitting it by chapter) and go through it that way, to make sure there are no typos that my word processor missed, and make sure that it flows properly. (With a few glaring exceptions)

I, for one, wouldn't let anyone else touch my stories.
I do all the editing for typos, and continuity, and stuff. I do enlist test readers for outside opinions, but I don't let them do direct edits. I'm not trusting enough.

I edit my own stories. I love editing, and there is no point in asking anyone else to, right now in my writing....

I think the most common way of editing for authors, though, is to have an editor go through and mark all their edits in, and then the author approves or ignores the edits he agrees with.

Of course, if an author gets really successful, I have a feeling they would be much more likely to just give it to an editor and let him make any edits he likes, since he wouldn't have as much time to lavish on every book....

I tend to self-edit more than having someone else... but that's only because I'm absolutely terrified of anyone reading my stuff and editing it. Once, a few years back, someone completely tore one of my novels to bits. Then about a year ago the same thing happened with a different person and a different novel. XD So, needless to say, I'm wary of having someone else edit my stuff, even if they're really good friends. Because most of my friends are smarter than me anyway. XD

I always self-edit before I have someone else proof read and edit. And of course I'm always like "No one can ever make any changes to anything unless I okay it!" Lol. I'm not easy to work with when it comes to editing my books.

I also self edit first, but then I usually allow people to make notes as they're test reading it, and I make changes if I want to/need to. I think it's important to allow others to edit, even if they make notes that you have to approve; you can read over and over your own writing so much making edits, that it is easy to miss mistakes that fresh eyes will notice.

I agree with this. When I was preparing to publish Grandmother's Letters, I worked over that thing, catching what I would have thought were all the edits. Then, my editors went over the manuscripts, making notes, which I added or discarded on consideration.

It was amazing sometimes, the things they caught, that never occurred to me!

That said, I probably wouldn't even consider letting anyone make changes to my books for me. Notes, absolutely. Actually changes. I don't think so. Maybe, maybe typos... Even those? Not sure.

I edit as I go when I'm writing, and I also go back and edit as I re-read a chapter. I have chapter one done on my novel (and am about 3 paragraphs shy of being done with chapter 2), and I've edited/re-written/gone over with a critical eye/evaluated/deleted parts of/rearranged chapter 1 about 20 times now. I finally feel like chapter 1 feels polished. Chapter 2 is still rough, and I've re-written it once already because I didn't like how it had turned out the first time through. That being said, this is not normally how I edit my stories. I don't generally go over my work with such a fine tooth comb because before this book my writing has been for fun and for reading online (fan fiction), etc. I still considered my other writing good, and people liked it, but I didn't mind having some typos in there, and my online novels were never intended to be part of a larger series. I feel like I have to be so much more on top of it with this novel because it's part 1 of 4 books, and because I want it to be published. Because there's so many pieces that intertwine between books 1 and 4, I feel like I really have to lay it all down and get it right chapter by chapter, rather than just writing the whole thing and going back to edit later.

Just me anyhow.

I try to do some editing on my own, but someone elses opinion helps especially if the area of editing is there strong point....I like critique and constructive criticism from others especially if I am writing a Christian Fantasy piece I know some but not enough in this realm so any advice is welcome....

Griffins, Centaurs, Dragons, etc.....

I have done some research, especially in the medieval time. That is the era my book takes place.

I find it helpful to watch movies that have to do with fantasy, and medieval, and take notes from them.
