Post subject:  Remembrance Sunday

We had a minutes silence in church this morning, to remember all the men and women who gave their lives so we can be free. I always think it's good to remember, and never forget what has been done for us. The sacrifice that was made, and the courage of all those men and women. So I thought I'd make this thread, so we can post poems, or quotes and messages. :)

I read this poem this afternoon, and posted it on Facebook:

Cover them over with beautiful flowers,
Deck them with garlands, those brothers of ours,
Lying so silent by night and by day
Sleeping the years of their manhood away.
Give them the meed they have won in the past;
Give them the honors their future forcast;
Give them the chaplets they won in the strife;
Give them the laurels they lost with their life.

And I love the poem, In Flanders Field:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Those are beautiful poems, Elanor. I wish I had a poem or quote to post... I do have one poem. It's not necessarily related to the remembrance of soldiers, but I think it's nice. Mary Rice wrote it.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I did not die.

Or Veterans day, as it is called here in the states. :D

I shall be back later to post something.

I like this poem. :)

They Did Their Share
by Joanna Fuchs

On Veteran's Day we honor
Soldiers who protect our nation.
For their service as our warriors,
They deserve our admiration.

Some of them were drafted;
Some were volunteers;
For some it was just yesterday;
For some it's been many years;

In the jungle or the desert,
On land or on the sea,
They did whatever was assigned
To produce a victory.

Some came back; some didn't.
They defended us everywhere.
Some saw combat; some rode a desk;
All of them did their share.

No matter what the duty,
For low pay and little glory,
These soldiers gave up normal lives,
For duties mundane and gory.

Let every veteran be honored;
Don't let politics get in the way.
Without them, freedom would have died;
What they did, we can't repay.

We owe so much to them,
Who kept us safe from terror,
So when we see a uniform,
Let's say "thank you" to every wearer.

That is so sad, but so beautiful. Thanks for sharing it, Renna.

*Loves this one as well* I would love any, I think. I always find poems about the war very sad, but they're always so well received. Thanks, Elly!
