You mean our characters or just characters that we like?

Mr: Smith: No, sir, I will not yield!

Mr. Smith: I guess this is just another lost cause Mr. Paine. All you people don't know about lost causes. Mr. Paine does. He said once they were the only causes worth fighting for and he fought for them once. For the only reason any man ever fights for them. Because of just one plain simple rule. Love thy neighbor. And in this world today of great hatred a man who knows that rule has a great trust. You know that rule Mr. Paine and I loved you for it just as my father did. And you know that you fight harder for the lost causes than for any others. Yes you'd even die for them. Like a man we both knew Mr. Paine. You think I'm licked. You all think I'm licked. Well I'm not licked. And I'm gonna stay right here and fight for this lost cause. Even if this room gets filled with lies like these. And the Taylors and all their armies come marching into this place. Somebody will listen to me.

For the last character, I will say Dustfinger from Inkheart. *winks at JJ* What an amazing character! I love how that for halfway through the book, you truly don't know if he's a good guy or a bad guy. His out-of-placeness in a world not his own is written so well, his ironic smile and sad eyes speak volumes of mystery, even through the words. He's a complex and interesting character, and definitely ranks among my favourites.

Characters I love?

Samwise Gamgee from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. I can't help it. Sam is just so... *sits down and starts to cry* There. I feel like doing that every time I think of Sam.

Anne Shirley from L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables Series. That was the second novel I ever read, and I fell in love with her imagination, her love for beauty in words, her funny adventures, etc.

Sam: Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you...BUT I CAN CARRY YOU! COME ON!

Sam: It's like in the great stories Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end it's only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines it'll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mr. Frodo, I do understand, I know now folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there's some good in the world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.

Heh. Samwise Gamgee was the next character I was going to talk about.

Sam always stuck out to me because of the love, dedication, and friendship displayed toward Frodo. He always took the first night watch no matter how tired he was, carried all the supplies, snuck portions of his food to Frodo, always kept hope alive, and he even fought off the temptation of the ring. Without Sam the ring would have never been destroyed.

To me, the scene that just stands out and defines Sam's character is when they are so close to destroying the ring on Mount Doom and Frodo can't go on. Instead of giving up, Sam (who is hurt, dehydrated, malnourished, weak, and exhausted beyond measure) refuses to give up and lifts Frodo onto his shoulders and carries him to the top.



He's a hero not by the words he says but by the actions he takes, and what he does speaks volumes about his true character. That's why a simple gardener from the Shire is my favorite character and, IMO, the true hero of LoTR.




Although, I'll have to say Frodo's whining did get a bit on my nerves.

Sam: "Mr. Frodo, not to downplay your burden or anything, but I am currently carrying the ring, the ring bearer, our supplies, and everything else on my shoulders up a sharp as broken glass incline of an active lava spewing volcano...barefoot. How about we don't talk about carrying burdens for a little while until we reach the top?"

*nods* That is my favorite scene, and every time we watch Lord of the Rings (and we do this annually) and it comes to that part, I get all choked up. (Plus you've got the background of Into the West playing.) Dear, dear Sam. Samwise Gamgee. I loved him in both the book and movie, and I'd say that Frodo only came across as whiny in the movie.

I also like Gandalf, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is his candor and gruffness. Makes him more realistic, I think. I also love the way he talks. *smiles just thinking about it*

My favorite scene is the one on the volcano when Sam decides to carry Frodo. That shows true loyalty and friendship right there.

I like that one too! I'm just a big Sam fan, though.

Okay, I couldn't just choose one character, so here are the top five. : P

Dustfinger (from the Inkheart trilogy) -- There was never any contest of who my favorite character would be, from the moment I started watching the Inkheart movie (and later on read the books).
I don't know for sure why Dustfinger caught my attention. At first, I think it was because he was so mysterious and intriguing, with his fire magic and the epic horned marten. But as the movie and the books wore on, he reminded me more of a lost puppy--how all he wanted was to go home to be with his family. And I love that, in the end, he did the right things. He struggled to help someone else, instead of save himself, and, when it came down to it, he was able to.

Boromir (from Lord of the Rings) -- It was a little harder to choose my favorite LOTR character; I'm always having trouble because all the characters are so cool--once, someone asked me who my favorite characters were, and I said, "Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Eomer, Faramir, Pippin, Sam, and Merry". (Not Frodo. He whines too much. )
But I think Boromir is definitely number one on the list. I honestly consider him as a form of Everyman, in the respect that he did give in to temptation. Most of the other characters didn't, at least not fully. Boromir is someone I can relate with; he wants to be good, and to do the right thing, but he has trouble overcoming temptation and doubts. And before he died, he redeemed himself. That's what everyone wants to do in the end, I think, is to prove that they're better than what people think of them.

Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold (from Once Upon A Time) -- Nobody I talk to (at least, 97% of the people I talk to) about OUAT understand why I like Mr. Gold's character so much. He's 'mean', 'a jerk', and he's just 'annoying'.
Well, maybe I'm delving a little too deep, but I think Rumpel is just misunderstood. I mean, he has every right to be angry--his wife ran out on him, he was ashamed and belittled in front of his only son, his son was sent to a different world, and he was told that the woman he loved was dead, and believed that for over twenty years. I think anyone would be bitter with the world after that.
In my opinion, he's trying not to be good on purpose, because in his life, he's associated 'emotions' with 'pain'. He's afraid that if he shows compassion, something will happen to hurt him again. And I think this because I can relate. I went through a period of time where I was literally a jerk to everyone, refused to show any sort of emotion that wasn't anger or annoyance. Because I had decided that if you love or feel happy, you'll just get hurt.
So anyway, I guess the reason I like his character so much is because of that. And he also has an awesome accent.

David Banner (from the 70's show, The Incredible Hulk) -- I had to do it. Don't ever let word of this get out to my brother and mom, or they will never let me forget it.
David Banner is probably on my top-favorite-TV show-character list. This time, not because he's misunderstood or struggling or anything. I like David because he's (as my mom says), 'the kindest, gentlest, most compassionate person ever seen on TV'. I don't know how true the superlatives are, but I do think he fits the descsriptive words chosen. I like watching the show mainly because he never hesitates to lend a hand to whoever needs it, even if he hardly knows them. He tries as hard as he can to find a cure for his Hulk problem, but for some reason never succeeds (as far as I can tell). Not to mention nobody ever picks him up when he's hitchhiking. That has to be annoying, and he just puts up with it. XD
(And he turns into a huge green monster that actually isn't evil and helps people. How much cooler can you get?)

Indiana Jones (from the all-famous movies) -- Yeah, none of you ever saw that coming, did you? I think it's fairly obvious why I like the character. He's the ultimate hero, but he's not invincible. He's brave, witty, and he carries around a bullwhip that he uses as a weapon. And he wears a wicked cool fedora. And his dad is James Bond (not really, but still). His sidekick Sallah is also a Dwarf in a different life (the LOTR side of me just couldn't resist). I mean, come on! He's probably one of the most epic characters in movie history.
And yeah, I'll stop the rambling now. Thanks for fighting through the annoying crazy fan rant.

((I wanted to put the guy from the movie Harvey, but it's been a long time since I've seen that movie, and I can't remember his name. I do know he was played by Jimmy Stewart. How could I forget? He's one of the best actors I've ever seen.))
