I don't have an opinion, so much as a question for you. Why do you want to graphically describe something? What is it about a detailed description that will make your story more effective?

Effective implies a goal. Not that I don't have one, but if we're going to discuss this, we should be on the same page. So, two questions:

1. Do you believe there is a goal that is (or should be) common to all fiction and in some way definitive of fiction?

2. What is the goal of your fiction?

1. Do you believe there is a goal that is (or should be) common to all fiction and in some way definitive of fiction?

Generally speaking, yes. Everything in our lives should either glorify God, point others to the gospel, or help others (or ourselves) to enjoy our Creator more. And if more than one of those goals is met then so much the better. :)

Specifically, though, it depends. I do not think all fiction needs to do the same thing. One person may write a story to bring awareness to a specific issue they've been called to point out. Someone else may have less "heady" purposes and simply want to write a good, clean, fun epic for all ages.

2. What is the goal of your fiction? Ouch...very honestly? This is something I've been re-evaluating lately. As it stands now, the goal of my writing is to reach people's emotions and help them not only to understand truth, but to feel a little bit of it too... So...in my current novel, the love of God for a wayward child.

Nessa- She's given up the veil, the vows she'd sworn, abandoned every effort to conform. Without a word to anyone she's gone her way alone, a dove escaping back into the storm.

Nolan- And though I don't understand why this happened, I know that I will when I look back someday, and see how you've brought beauty from ashes, and made me as gold purified through the flames.

Azriel- And who do you think you are, running round leaving scars, collecting your jar of hearts, and tearing love apart? You're gonna catch a cold from the ice inside your soul, so don't come back to me. Don't come back at all...
