It seems that quite a few people on this forum own, are interested in or work with horses. Just for fun (and to get to know other horse-loving Holy-Worlders) I've made up this little questionnaire:

What kind of horse experience do you have? Do you own, work with or take lessons on horses?

What is your favorite way to ride (English, Western) and discipline (Jumping, Racing, etc.)?

Would you like to own a horse? If so, what would your dream horse be, in attitude and appearance?

How do you incorporate horses into your fantasy stories?

Why do you like horses (assuming that you do)?/What do you like about them?

Enjoy!

Well, I can only answer a few of those questions, because I do not own a horse.

What kind of horse experience do you have? I did ride a horse when I went to Hawaii a few months ago :) it was on a very pretty trail. (the horses name was Nalu)Other than that, I have never ridden a horse.

Would you like to own a horse? If so, what would your dream horse be, in attitude and appearance? It would be fun, but it will probably not happen. Though someone on my street owns horses...
I would want a Chesnut-colored horse, with a band of white going down the snout? (I don't really know much about horses) and maybe white around the legs too.

How do you incorporate horses into your fantasy stories?
Well, they are used to transport people, since there are no cars or things with motors :) I also have a Shetland Pony/Unicorn mix (Shetland Ponies with Unicorn Horns) that I haven't come up with a name yet :)

Why do you like horses (assuming that you do)?/What do you like about them? I think they are wonderful animals. They have such lithe bodies and are really strong. Plus they always seem to look majestic. :)

What kind of horse experience do you have? Do you own, work with or take lessons on horses? I had riding lessons from a family friend one year until the horse had to be put down just as I started learning to canter. :( Previous to the lessons we mucked out her stalls and groomed the horses for fun, just to be around the horses. ^^

What is your favorite way to ride (English, Western) and discipline (Jumping, Racing, etc.)? When I rode it was mainly Western which I enjoy. I did English once and felt very insecure in the little saddle. XD Sadly, I haven't ridden in four years.

Would you like to own a horse? If so, what would your dream horse be, in attitude and appearance? Wow, there's a couple different horses I'd like to own. I'd love a Friesian and Arabian. The Fresian would be black and I'd love a dark bay Arabian with a star. No markings on legs, just the black stockings. :)

How do you incorporate horses into your fantasy stories? Usually they are the pet of my main character and modes of transportation. Either that or they are the main characters of the story. :D

Why do you like horses (assuming that you do)?/What do you like about them? I personally can't explain why I like them so much. First of all, I think they are one of God's amazing creatures He's blessed us with. There's just something about them that seems to make a connection with us humans.
I love the sleek beauty and rhythm of their bodies and how they seems to flow. They represent both grace and strength. :D

I suppose that since I started this thread I ought to answer the questions. :D

What kind of horse experience do you have? Do you own, work with or take lessons on horses? Not as much as I wish. I have taken several lessons and I am currently working with a mare named Leah at a local stable. I groom, free-lunge and graze her.

What is your favorite way to ride (English, Western) and discipline (Jumping, Racing, etc.)? Probably English, since that's what I learned. I'd like to try jumping sometime and I've considered being a stunt rider. But that was mostly in my imagination.

Would you like to own a horse? YES! If so, what would your dream horse be, in attitude and appearance? My dream horse would be a grulla Morgan filly or a liver chestnut Arab filly. She'd be sweet and loyal but have a fiesty streak. She'd have a smooth, extended trot and a smooth canter. And she'd like to learn tricks. Oh, and I'd name her Eclipse, Echo for short. :D

How do you incorporate horses into your fantasy stories? I've got a race of unicorns in one world that has yet to be developed into a story. In my other story, which is probably going to end up as a trilogy, one of the main characters is a rider. I have a feeling that the quick-thinking and calmness learned when working with horses is going to help her somewhere during the story. :D

I've started many other stories about girls who have horses, and I wrote a short story once about the girl who tames the wild colt. Unrealistic, I know, but it was fun to write. :D

Why do you like horses (assuming that you do)?/What do you like about them? They're big and powerful and graceful, and yet, they let humans control them. They're the essence of freedom. They carry an aura of calmness around them. They're beautiful to watch. If you treat them with kindness and firmness, they will look to you as their herd leader. They'll trust you, let you be in charge, and look to you for security. And they're just plain gorgeous.
~~~~~
I have this sort of cheesy metaphor, that we are like horses. If we try to control ourselves, we'll eventually end up in trouble. But if we let God take the saddle, He'll lead us where we ought to go. Like horses, sometimes we'll get scared of things, but we can trust our Rider to take care of us.
What do ya'all think?
I don't think that metaphor was cheesy. Then again perhaps it's just a horse-lover thing. :roll:
What kind of horse experience do you have? Do you own, work with or take lessons on horses? I took riding lessons for a few years when I was younger, but being so small, I was never able to do anything more than a trot. Right now I live next to friends who own horses. They let me ride some through the woods and around the farms. I help take care of them whenever needed as well.
When I graduate I plan on taking college courses on training, breeding, and raising, so I can get a certificate and board horses or something as a side job.
What is your favorite way to ride (English, Western) and discipline (Jumping, Racing, etc.)?
Western, definitely. I have this picture in my head of a girl with dark brown braids a western saddle and a cowboy hat. Too bad I don't live out west.
Also I find that endurance saddles work as an all around good alternative rather than Western or English especially when it comes to jumping. When you live in the woods with lots of fallen trees you never know when you might need to jump. Or at least that's one excuse I like to use. :roll:
As for discipline I'm not sure what my favorite is. I think barrel racing is cool though.
Would you like to own a horse? YES!!!! If so, what would your dream horse be, in attitude and appearance?
For as long as I can remember I've wanted a black Arabian with a white star, a sweet disposition, and a love for her owner. Pretty much a four legged best friend. :D And actually I think I'd be happy with any type or color horse so long as I can call it mine.
How do you incorporate horses into your fantasy stories?
I pretty much put them in my story anywhere I can. Warhorses. Unicorns. Pets. A mode of transporation.
Why do you like horses (assuming that you do)?/What do you like about them?
I honestly don't know. I've loved them ever since I can remember. And I believe that one of the most beautiful sights in the world is of a running horse.
:) I don't think it's cheesy! The last sentence is similar to how we are like sheep - except we're a lot more like sheep than horses cause sheep just aren't as smart :roll: . Or I guess you could say we are frightened sheep naturally... but God makes us strong horses...
Okay THAT train is heading for a cliff! :)
The other thing I was going to say was that made me think of the verses in James 3! Where they compared the tongue to a bit in the mouth of a horse.
Anyhow here's my answers to the questions:
What kind of horse experience do you have? Do you own, work with or take lessons on horses?
I used to own a pony named Daisy who was probably... 30 years old (we had no idea so just guessed ;) ) She was a paint with long shaggy hair (that got very bushy in the winter), a large, round stomach, and a swayback. She was the kind of horse you could put kids on her back and just leave them with no fear. :) But she also had a terrible stubborn streak when she didn't get her own way... :) I never took official lessons... just learned from a few friends along the way.
I owned Daisy for about 6 years - she just passed away this Jan. very quietly. She was the best pony I could ask for! (sorry for that sad story right there! ;) )
What is your favorite way to ride (English, Western) and discipline (Jumping, Racing, etc.)?
Mmm... I only tried an English saddle a few times and while it's nice because it's lighter and much simpler, I prefer the security of a western.
I just rode, no fancy stuff. :) But I love riding through the woods!
Would you like to own a horse? If so, what would your dream horse be, in attitude and appearance?
I would love a horse... oh, I love all of the colors I don't know if I could choose! (maybe a dun like Spirit ;) ) However I would want it to be small(er) because I'm small(er) :) ,kind and devoted to me but still "free" (if that makes any sense). Kind of like a mix between a cat and a dog... except in a horse's body... yeah. :D
How do you incorporate horses into your fantasy stories?
In my early stories they were pretty much ALL about horses! Racing, surviving in the desert, a fairy's unicorn... they were everywhere. Now I don't put them in as main characters, but horses definitely still pop up in my writing!
Why do you like horses (assuming that you do)?/What do you like about them?
I've never thought about why I like them... I guess for a lot of small reasons. Their warm breath on your palm. The sound when they whinny or snort. Their pleasure when they roll (especially right after a bath! ;) ). Their gracefulness. And I love riding them! Sure, you bounce a lot and get sore (at least I did)... but there's something special to sitting in a saddle on horse, holding the reins in your hand. Or maybe just sitting on their back clutching their mane. :) Ah, horses...
I don't think it was cheesy...i think everyone is saying that about that sentence, so you're good! :D I'm exactly like Serena, so the only thing that's different is that in my world, I have unicorns ;)
I don't own a horse. I used to take lessons. :)
Western by far and racing is cool.
YES, I WOULD LOVE TO OWN ONE. A bit feisty but still under control, black. I could do with painted but I would prefer just black.
Most of my main characters own horses, they are like cars. I mean, how else are they to supposed to get around the kingdom!
Cause they rock. Everything.
