Hello everybody!

I thought I'd better re-introduce myself, since I have been pretty much AWOL from this forum for a while now. I have no original excuse...life merely became too crowded to be everywhere at once. I'm hoping to contribute to the discussions here more "regularly" from here.

Anyway, for any who missed it the first time around and don't feel like digging through old threads, I'm Becky, a homeschooling mom of 3 and fantasy author. (Well, aspiring, for the most part.) I have serial running at Digital Dragon magazine, which I will probably keep writing for somewhere between 14 and 26 more stories, and I'm currently sending my first novel out to agents. (Which is why I have no fingernails to speak of! ;) )

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone is talking about of late. See you around the forum!

Ha ha! I have to say, this is one of the few places where the teens of the group say things like "We could use another adult..." That's so counter-cultural, I hardly know what to do with myself. :D

I'm looking forward to seeing whats going on with the collaborative story.

I am pretty new here, so I can't really say 'welcome back' very well since I wasn't here before in order to welcome you back... but welcome anyway! :D

What are your favorite types of fantasy stories to write, as a published author? :)

Well, Melody, I'd have to say that I will always be partial to the guys I call the patriarchs of Christian fantasy: Tolkien and Lewis. I love their command of language and their uncompromising dedication to the struggle of good against evil.

That being said, though, I'm trying to read more "modern Christian fantasy," because I feel it's important to stay abreast of publishing trends so that I can know what makes it into print. Lately, I've been following Jill Williamson, who has written two books in her Blood of Kings series: By Darkness Hid and To Darkness Fled. (I just reviewed the latter on my blog.) I admit, part of my interest in reading her is that I would love for my books to make it into print with Marcher Lord Press, so knowing what they are publishing is research I need to do. (There's a long story there about my situation with why my manuscript isn't sitting at MLP right now, but I won't get into it unless somebody asks.) But outside of the research aspect, Ms. Williamson has produced a couple of very interesting books with engaging characters.

I've also read a bit of Karen Hancock, although I'm still trying to sort out if I will read more, since she's not afraid to put the sin of the characters on the page. She writes an engaging tale, though, so I might just put my waders on an keep working through her Legends of the Guardian King series. At least I can get it through the library!

Hmmm. Who else? I've only read one of Donita K. Paul's books, and it didn't grab me particularly, but I'm told that's my fault because I chose a book from the middle of the series and it was the one told from Bardon's perspective. People assured me that I would adore her if I had started with any book but that one.

Beyond those fiction writers, the rest of my time is spent in craft books. Orson Scott Card, Jeff Gerke, Renni Brown/Dave King, etc. I try to alternate--fiction, craft book, fiction, craft book.

Well enough rambling from me. I know how people feel when they see a post that they have to scroll to read. ;)

Neat, Mrs. Minor! What 'craft' books do you particularly like? I don't think I've read any yet...let's see, I have that Manual of Style by E.B. White on my shelf but I (shhh) haven't finished reading it. Just a little dry. ;)

Oh, do you like reading the History of Middle-earth books? :) And are you into linguistics? Since you're a Tolkien fan, thought I'd ask... :)

Hmmm. As for craft books, my favorites so far have been Self Editing for Fiction Writers (Browne and King), Characters and Viewpoint (Orson Scott Card), The Art and Craft of Writing Christian Fiction (Jeff Gerke) are the three "stand-outs" I've read in the past 6 months. I've heard the Manual of Style is a little dry for reading, but useful (I haven't tackled it.)

I am a little on the fence about a lot of the posthumous publication of Tolkien's work. Part of me likes to sop up whatever Middle Earth I can get, but another part of me feels a little odd about it, because some of the stuff his estate is publishing are works that he never considered "finished." Then critics have the audacity to complain that there are conflicting world-building elements in the newer publications...well of COURSE there are. Tolkien wasn't done figuring out his world when he wrote those other pieces.

I do find the building of languages fascinating, even if it is a little above my level of ability. I have only compiled about 35 words or so of the ancient elvish of my world (the language all elves used before the race was sundered into sub-cultures). I admire folks who have the creative juices to get whole languages put together!

Oh, and yeah, you're right Jordan...I think we'll skip BM as an option for a moniker. LOL! I could go by Rebecca, but them my initials end up being RPM. Not as bad, but it sets up a certain expectation...
