I read fantasy, sci-fi and historical fiction.

Humorously, I read mainly non-fiction now. I would love to read more fantasy, if I could get a hold of more. :)

Yeah, what's with that? Just kidding. I can't read too much non-fiction...it's too REAL.

I used to hate non-fiction, but now I love it. There is such a depth of truth, reality, and applicability to really good non-fiction that is very helpful and appealing. Besides, it helps deepen my fantasy writing.

I know what you mean. I enjoy reading non-fiction books about fiction books. It really helps me glimpse the real picture. I also like, ahem, books about war & history. You're right, they all help in writing fantasy.

This was actually a frustrating poll.:D

I read all of these, in fairly equal amounts. So I just picked the one I enjoy the most.:)

I had trouble deciding too. Unfortunately, I read more historical fiction than fantasy due to a lack of decent fantasy. Hopefully, this little group of Christian writers is going to change that!

Hmmm...I have a difficult time with historical fiction. Most of it annoys me. (especially G.A. Henty)

It seems like the whole plot is:

Fictional Teenager meets historical figure, Fictional Teenager builds a relationship with historical figure, Fictional Teenager saves the life of historical figure, and has his own life changed in some major way...

I don't really agree with you. I agree that G.A. Henty's books can grow a bit too similar, but in general, I love historical fiction. Medieval knights fighting for their honor and country, boys in the Civil War pushed into fighting before they have reachd manhood, slaves fighting for a chance to break free...it makes my adrenaline rush just thinking about it! I think there is more heart-wrenching drama and realism in history than in anything else. While fantasy certainly possesses characteristics that historical fiction does not, historical fiction's reality yet imaginative drama really affects me.

By the way, if you want to read good historical fiction, I would encourage any girls on here to read Ann Rinaldi's books. I really appreciate the historical action of her novels and the added drama and personable characters.

AH! So you're simply talking about fiction set in a historical time! I would agree with you there.:)

I was thinking more of historical fiction that is based around historical figures, and does not have much of a plot.

No, although sometimes it is. I like historical fiction set in a time period (preferrably medieval or Civil War era) with a good plot around it.

Hmmm...what are some good historic fiction books you have read then? (Methinks I must find some.:D)

Anything by Ann Rinaldi. It's not Christian, and there is some profanity, but they are outstanding stories. If you like classics, two of my favorite books are Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott and A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Rosemary Sutcliff's books are pretty popular. King's Shadow is a good book. Stealing Freedom is also an excellent book. The Talisman by Scott is outstanding.

I've read Ivanhoe, and a Tale of Two Cities, but I'll have to look for the other ones! Especially The Talisman. (it sounds...almost like fantasy.:D)

The best part of The Talisman is the end, so keep reading through it all. The end is...wow!

I read just about anything that isn't a text book. Emphasis on just about.
