Post subject:  Bible Memorization Accountability

This thread is for people who wish to memorize portions of the bible to report in, encourage each other, and keep one another accountable.

I am a big memorizer. I know ten minute arias, and sixteen page story poems. I memorize every single script I've acted in in it's entirety. Then we read a book (Ten Peas in the Pod for the curious) about a family who regularly memorized entire books of the bible. My dad decided this would be a useful pasttime for everyone, and thus many members of my family chose a book of the bible to work on.

I chose Lamentations, but got bored with it after about two chapters. (It's hard!) My dad and his friend, (we were homechurching then, long story, sad story) were working on Galatians, and they sort of had a competition going to see who could learn faster, and so I switched. I think I got through chapter 4. My sister picked Romans, and she was the fastest of all of us and got about 4-5 chapters right away.

But then we fell out of fellowship with the aforementioned family (in the aforementioned long, sad story) and without the comaraderie and accountability the memorization sort of fell by the wayside.

Recently, sort of half-quoting a Roman's chapter I realized this, and was saddened by it. I would really like to get back into bible memorization, and not just by the verse, but by the whole chapter, possibly even book. I'd like to finish with Galatians, and then get at least the first eight chapters of Romans (beautiful chapters) and then the gospel of John. (I know some large parts of John already. If you push me really hard I can probably recall them, but I'm not sure. Haven't tried yet.)

So! Who else has similar ambitions, or has decided to have similar ambitions after reading this somewhat rambly story? *will save all rants about the ease and methods of memorization long and short for when asked*

I've done book memorization before :D I could once quote whole chapters of a few different New Testament books, but it's been 'O three or so years since I've done that... I could do with a refresher and expansion. Count me in!

If you'll allow me until next weekend, I believe I can grab my scripture portions (which have larger text and are easier to carry) and then we could start with a grouping of Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians :dieshappy: (makes it easy since one of my scripture portions has those four grouped together ;))

Ooh, this is awesome! I love memorizing! Especially long stretches.

I memorized Philippians last year, and I Peter this year, and have been working on the book of Ecclesiastes for some time now. I'm on the seventh chapter, and I want to finish it! So... I guess you can all poke me about that now. :D I need accountability.

Thanks for starting this thread, Katie!

Oh, oh! *Hand shoots up* I'm part of a bible quizzing program which has made me memorize far more in the past four years then I ever would have alone. Ok, let me explain my self. :D

Bible quizzing (I found a site here) is an excellent program that help teens the age of 12-18 memorize the bible. To explain it briefly, it is a organized program across Canada and the US that runs during the school year. A book from the New Testament is being memorized, and during the year you basically end up going through the entire book, studying it, memorizing it, and finally quizzing on it. But not everyone is a big memorizer. For this reason there are three ways to do it, 145, 300, or full material. And three divisions to go along with those. A, B, and C. (I'll get to that in a minute.)

Every week you work on about 1 chapter, you memorize it, then once a week you get together with your quizzing group (seriously, look for one near you!) And your quiz coach will hold a Bible study on that chapter, and you will also have to recite what you memorized. And then you quiz on it. (I'll explain the quizzing part later.) If doing 145, you will probably only get about 3-11 verses to do a week, and in total you'll end up memorizing 145 that year. About 7-20 for 300, and you'll end up with 300 verses in your head at the end of the year. And for full material, you'll end up having memorized, well, duh, everything. ;) How many per week really depends on the book.

C is the division for the new quizzers, young or old, aka the rookies. The rookies quiz against other rookies so they all have a fair chance. In C 145 is memorized, and that means in total you memorize 145 verses a year. To some of you, this may seem hard. Others are probably thinking "piece of cake." To those thinking the first one, it's not that hard. You don't have that many verses yet.

B division is also 145, and for those quizzers who are not the best at memorizing, or don't have very much time. B quizzers only quiz against other Bs, as all the divisions are separate.

And finally, A division. A is for the those quizzers who love to memorize, and they either do 300 or full material. (This is the division I'm in.) The best quizzers quiz here, the ones that want to go to internationals or Minneapolis. (will explain quiz meets later) They only compete with other quizzers on their level, and to be in this division it takes far more work.

Now, one to the quizzing and meets part! (I'll make this short because I'm starting to feel like I'm derailing Vanya's thread) Basically, you get to jump those funny looking benches that were in the picture in the link above. You quiz on what you have memorized thus far. A quiz meet is where the district that you quiz in all comes to one quizzing group that is hosting, and each division quizzes against others of the same division. Several primarily rounds are held, then after a bit you get to finals, where you compete for trophies. You quiz on a team of 3-5 people, and work together as a team to win.

All in all, it's a fantastic program to get you memorizing. I've been in it 4 years, and memorized large amounts of Luke, 1&2 Corinthians, John, and this year, Hebrews & 1 & 2 Peter. I highly recommend it if you want to memorize the Bible with a nice motive. I'm doing full material as my first time doing this year, and I would not be motivated to do it without quizzing. Once again, it's AMAZING!

Azzy, I believe that's similar to what I've done in the past (if not the same, I'd know better, but your link isn't working :() I was only in it for a few years. We did Romans, James, Acts, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon. My siblings were in it before me and did amazing. Their teams made it to nationals a few times (I never did).

Anywho... *stops derailing thread* I'll be grabbing my scripture portions that moment I get a chance. Until then, there's always my complete Bible :)

I just started 1John. At first, I was doing quite well, but then you just run out of steam, and I'm getting lazy about it.

I have not memorized Bible books before... seems interesting. :D I would be willing to do it, most likely. (I've already memorized "longish" sections- Proverbs 31:10-31, Titus 2, 1 Corinthians 13 and something else I'm forgetting.)

Hey! I just started working on memorizing Psalms. I started with Psalms 2, though... I'll probably finish Psalms 2 and go back to 1. I've got half of Psalms 2 done so far.

My goal is to have all of Psalms and Proverbs memorized by the end of the year. Not just "memorized" and moved on, but continual memorization so I learn it by heart.

You can count me in. I've been needing some motivation to get back to memorizing portions of the Bible. I think I'll start with James. I've been reading it a lot lately, so that should give me a good start on memorization.

My memorization in quizzing is going well. :D I've done all of Hebrews except for a few chapters I missed before in the quizzing program, so I'm catching up now. :D And I also memorized chapter one of 1st Peter too, as part of the quizzing program. I hope I can stick with full material once I get caught up. :D

Thank you! Though I could have never done it without the quizzing program. All the more reason to get involved with Bible Quizzing! :D ;)

I wanted to share a little tidbit with you all that I heard at the bible quiz meet I recently went too. The speaker was a former quizzer. He said some really thought provoking things, but this one made me think of you guys, and it resonates true with me as well.

I regret a lot of things I've done in my life. Like spending too much time playing computer games, or saying nasty things. I've been in bible quizzing for four years now, and many hours have been devoted to memorizing.

I don't regret a minute of it. I have never regretted memorizing a verse.

If you take the time to memorize, you will not regret it.

A Bible memory accountability thread? 'Tis awesome! I'd like to revive this one!

I love Bible memory. Sadly, I can't say that I've devoted much time to it in the scheme of things; but still, memorizing the things I have has been such a blessing. I love the way God's Word can also become so much more a part of our lives when we have it stored in our minds and hearts in this way.

This summer, I'm involved in the National Bible Bee, which is a sort of Bible study/memory competition. We're studying the book of 2 Timothy this year and have 117 memory verses assigned. They're from various passages all over the Word.

So, my current memory goals are to memorize these verses (learned about 80 of them so far) and the book of 2 Timothy.

Anyone else memorizing??

I am attempting to memorize Philippians. I have verses 1-11 roughly memorized so far.

I've memorized Philippians, Faith. It's such a blessing! :)

I started memorizing Ecclesiastes awhile ago, and I want to finish it sometime. Right now I'm trying to do a little refreshing on the stuff I've already memorized.

Thanks, Grace. I have found it to be a blessing, too.

Ecclesiastes would be fun. And hard, methinks. Good for you, Grace!

Faith & Grace, your memorizing projects sound great!

I just finished learning my Bible Bee passages today, so tomorrow I need to move on to memorizing 2 Timothy.
