Post subject:  Selling Books

Hi HW!
I have about a dozen books that I'm trying to put up for sale on the internet. I've never really ventured into this sort of thing before, so I was wondering if any of y'all had input about this.

Have you ever sold books online? How did you do so? How much below list price did you sell them for? I'd like to make at least some money off of these. They are in practically new condition, I've not read any of them more than once.

So how do you sell books? Amazon? Craigslist? eBay? Thanks!

I've sold books on eBay before. Mostly I check and see how much they are going for on eBay before deciding on a price. Kind of cheating, but it works. :D

I've sold some stuff via eBay (not books). Ebay rules. Use it. ;)

I've sold and bought books from Ebay, I have never sold books by another method recently, I always sell them via Ebay now. :)

How I would go about selling some books is first research how much the books you own are going for on the internet. Then set your prize and list it on ebay with a good picture and description.
Then hope someone bids.

(You can either have a buy now or auction. Auction might do better, make sure you don't put your starting bid too low.)

I've considered this as a business, so I'd better subscribe to this! :) I would recomend Half for the reason that everyone has recommended it to me, even though I personally like Ebay better. I imagine that Ebay may be better for antique/rare books vs. normal.
But... I don't really know!

I usually list books on Amazon, mostly for simplicity's sake. There are a lot of books out there that are more expensive to sell then to simply stick in storage, so you do need to look up your books and see what they're going for. On Amazon I try to list as the lowest seller, unless it's completely ridiculous and there's only one or two people selling that low. (If there are sixty book listed at $0.01 yours will never sell at $6.99. But if there is one book listed at $3.45 and the rest are $11 or more, then list yours at the bottom of the higher price range.)

I've actually made quite a bit of money off of this, but it's all dependent on having books that are worth money. Also keep in mind that while Amazon gives you money to ship they take a very generous commission. I sold a book for $45 dollars and they took $11. (But they gave me $4... work out your own math. )

I have sold some textbooks on Ebay but it's harder, and there's more maintenance involved. The commission is a lot less, but if the book doesn't sell you still have to pay the listing fees. (Listing on Amazon is free.)

Hm. I looked into Amazon briefly but they wanted ridiculously low prices for my books. Like....one or two bucks each or something. I'm hoping for something like four or so. *shrugs*

So eBay has a listing price?

No, but they may have other copies of your book selling. You can check and see what those are generally going for.

Have you considered looking into a local used book store? They might not give you as much, but it's quick and no-hassle. And no shipping, listing fees, etc... If you're just looking to get rid of books, local is great. :D

@Kait: Nothing much *looks over at stack* Mainly biographies, one novel (which I don't recommend), a few christian books, and....yeah. :P I can PM you the list if you want :)
