This is a very very very indefinate concept right now. I'm still very early in planning it, but I figured I'd put it out to you.
I'm working on creating a fundraiser to help stop world hunger. The basic idea is: for an uncertain amount of time, partcipants would put aside their normal food and eat (generally) the same amount of food as people in a lower middle-class family in a third-world country would. The money that would have gone towards the larger meals would be put aside as the donation. I'm going to talk to some people who know more about this than I do: a dietician, etc. But I wanted to throw out some questions as well. For those of you who are in a missionary family or who know anything about this, can you tell me (this is for one adult):
How many meals would they have a day, and what would they consist of?
What would be the approximate weight of the food consumed each day?
What kinds of foods are most common?
How many people are in most typical families?
What does food for the family for a day cost them? Preferably in Canadian dollars.
To what degree are most of these people malnourished?
Are any of these families supported partially or fully by children? (As in, are the children going to school, or do they work and care for younger ones? Are they a supply of income?)
Please, if you're giving me answers just say what country you're basing it off of first.
Also, does anybody have ideas about who I could send money through?
As I said, this is barely planned. If any of you could help me out, that would be great. Also, do tell me if you would participate, either just you or your whole family.
Thanks!

This is a really cool idea, Aldara. :D

Be careful of your thoughts; guard your mind, for your thoughts become words. Be guarded when you speak, for your words turn into action. Watch what you do, for your actions will become habits. Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you. Instead, He’s opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Have you heard of the One Dollar Diet Project? Bascially, a married couple of teachers sort of randomly decided to try to eat for a dollar or less apiece per day for 30 days, and blog about it. Might be interesting research for you.

Caveat, though - apparently one of their blog posts (long after the end of the project, so I think you can read that month's worth safely) has a tasteless photo of an unclothed actress taken from a PETA advertisement... Regrettable, and frankly senseless. You could probably disable images on your browser when you visit, to be on the safe side.

*ETA* To clarify about that icky photo - she's posed in such a way that you don't see anything you wouldn't see at the Miss America pageant, but I thought a warning would be... beneficial.

That is a neat idea.
Have you heard of the 30 Hour Famine? It's supported by World Vision, and basically what you do is raise money or third world countries by going 30 hours without food. I did it last year, and myself and some other homeschooling friends went 30 hours with only fruit juice and water. We raised somewhere near 2000 dollars. It was great! :D

@Azlyn my youth group does something like that! We call it Starving for Hope, and it's only 24 hours, but we raise money for an orphanage in Haiti that our church supports. We also have a yard sale. It's really cool :D

I've done the 30 hour famine before. It was lots of fun. Thanks for your suggestions, everyone.

I can't say how much money they usually have but, knowing several people who sponsor children through Compassion, I can say that their staples are usually rice and beans (from knowledge of Guatemala which probably applies to most of central America) or just rice (Asia) I don't know about the parts of the world that don't have those foods though.

Thanks, Rin! I'm still trying to get the email address of my contact person. (The son of my mum's co-worker.)
