Howdy...I'm back, and I hope to stay! Below you can read the intro article I made for myself a while ago on a different forum.

A Brief Synopsis of a Weird Individual

Warning: The individual we are about to summarize, one who is generally called ‘Matthew’, has been known to fortuitously induce life-threatening laughter, and also has a tendency to act weird with no provocation. This includes the telling of bad jokes, construction of massive and convoluted sentences, the usage of esoteric and abstruse words, and sometimes even schizophrenic conversations between himself and…himself. If you feel that you are not mentally stable enough to remain unaffected by such madness, we suggest that you cease reading immediately and consult a psychiatrist.

Since you are still reading, we assume that you must want to know more about this person and believe yourself healthy enough to cope with his eccentricity. You should be warned that he often appears normal, but once he knows you well enough, his nuttiness will be manifest. He also claims he can write his own synopsis, but we know what would happen if we let him. And we can’t have that.

To prove that Matthew is a nut (and a weird one at that), let us point out his preposterous adventure with Porsches. Believing that he is something special, he thought he should have a Porsche for his first car. So, after earning some money, he bought one, a 1987 924S. This Porsche has run very well for the two years he’s had it, and maintenance costs have remained low.

That’s all fine and good, but this crazy guy took his extra money and bought a second Porsche, a 1979 928 that had to be dragged home behind a pickup truck! He did some slapdash tinkering he likes to call ‘repairs’, but we know for a fact that he did nothing more than yank and push on some random doohickeys. By arbitrary luck (or divine interference) the beast started running again. Matthew tried to sell it, but no one wanted it except a few bums who didn’t have the money anyway. In a rare burst of ingenuity (Matthew insists that it’s common, not rare, but we disagree) he traded it for yet another Porsche!

This third car, a late 1985 944, had fewer miles than the 928 and got much better gas mileage, an attractive feature in the day of the four-dollar gallon. It sold after just two weeks, and Matthew made a profit of $1,307.
So what did he do with that money? Save it for college? No, the maniac went out and bought a Honda CRX, supposedly to save on gas during his job with the Census Bureau. It remains to be seen if the Honda will cost him money or make him a profit.

Leaving the subject of cars, we come upon Matthew’s second obsession, which is the music of Frederic Chopin. He claims he has played over sixty of the man’s works, but that count includes everything he started and decided was too hard. We are now under assault by Matthew, as he tries to delete this paragraph.

But the truth is, even though he has played the piano since he was five years old, he is much too impatient and distracted to be exceptionally good. Only a smidge of talent keeps him from being a lousy pianist. There is just one thing that will make him decide to practice correctly and learn the music well, and that is an upcoming recital, usually one that is happening within the next week.

Matthew insists that we are exaggerating and is pleading for this to be revised. But we know the truth, and we aren’t going to stretch it for his sake.

Speaking of stretching, Matthew wants us to declare that he is six feet five inches tall. That is hardly worth mentioning, though, because at the end of the day he’s only about six-four. He says it’s unnatural spinal compression, and we agree. It’s caused by his aversion to perfunctory exercise. No, he says it is caused by his small (that is, ‘normal sized’) mattress, and all the little siblings who like to hang on his body parts. Whatever the reason, he is adamant that his correct height is six foot five, and we’ll give him that much.

We now turn to Matthew’s writing. He seems to think that he has been preordained to succeed Patrick McManus as the next great American humorist. We are sorry to burst his bubble, but he’s really not that funny. Oh, he says he is, but he’s the sort of guy who will laugh at anything.

Even worse, however, is the fact that he hated his English studies until about age fifteen, a year and a half before he graduated high school. This means he has only been writing regularly for a few years. When he turned fifteen, he didn’t even know what paragraphs were. To be fair, Matthew says we should point out the fact that he learns very quickly, hence the early high school graduation. We will point this out briefly in passing, but it doesn’t seem very significant in light of what we’ve already heard.

Matthew says to stop talking about his deranged writing life and move on. So we will bring up the fact that he has eight younger siblings…three brothers and five sisters. He has tried to attribute his weirdness to their influence, but he was around before any of them, and they are the ones who look up to him, not vice-versa. We find it hard to believe that he is so influenced by his little siblings that he would follow their example and pilfer chocolate chips from the freezer. Instead, this immaturity obviously originated from him.

We now move on to avoid the possibility of being strangled by Matthew. We asked if there is anything else he would like us to mention, and he says we need to print retractions and corrections. The poor guy is delusional and deranged. We have printed nothing retractable or correctional.

Welcome, Matthew! I hope this site blesses you, and I can relate to the character problem you spoke of. But this site has helped me tremendously, as I hope it does you.

I must say, Jay, it must be nice having such an imaginative family. My family.... is not quite so. I do wish someone in the family would learn to love it also, so that they family will stop looking at me as if I were from another planet (and sometimes I do wonder ;) ) everytime I say my planned career is to be a wife, mother, and author....

So, if you don't mind telling us, Matthew, what is the title of your story?

Well...I wrote an extensive reply talking about all my super-smart brothers and stuff, but right now this forum is not working too well with my computer...or maybe it's my dialup connection.

Anyway, we do have a very creative family, and it's fun. I play the piano and write music. One of my brothers draws amazing pictures, as well as being a much better fantasy writer than I am.

I'm the oldest of nine. Our grandfather on the Lauser side had two children only, and now he has 16 grandchildren (I think, correct me if I'm wrong Jay).

It's not you, it's getting me, too....

That's awesome! I play the piano, thought I have tried my hand at writing music and it didn't turn out as I hoped, so I stick with my story writing. I have been playing for 2 1/2 years, and I definately love it, though! I am into the classics, I am working on Debussy's Reverie right now. How long have you played?

Wow, that's cool! I am the oldest of eight, and I love it. My siblings are completely awesome! That's really neat. My grandparents on my mom's side had two kids and have ten grandchildren, so it's pretty neat!

Post subject:  Re: Guten Tag

Oh, the title of my story is Forlendo. I posted the prologue and chapter one.

I've been playing piano for...13 years now. I play mostly Chopin. Right now I am working on his 4th ballade...and I can already play the other three. I don't personally know anyone who can play all four well, not even my concert-pianist teacher. But I will soon! :D

I play some other stuff, mostly just really famous pieces like Clair de Lune (Debussy) as well as his first Arabesque, some Schumann, Beethoven, etc. But Chopin is as much a hero of mine as Tolkien is (oh, and I can't forget Patrick McManus!)

Today is Chopin's 200th birthday! I've been playing a whole bunch of his music. I counted up the pieces by him that I can play, could play, or tried to play (and at least got through with hands together) and the list totals just about 60 pieces. Yeah, I am a total Chopin nut. I could give you a list of all his music off the top of my head (not the titles, but like 4 Ballades, 4 Scherzos, 3 Sonatas, etc.) He wrote a total of 236 pieces of music, about 60 of those hardly anyone has heard of. One of them I had to transcribe from the recording because I couldn't find the sheet music. All I am missing from my collection is a piano/cello piece, a piano duet, and the 19 Polish songs he wrote.

Well, you can probably tell by now how crazy I am about Chopin. Just don't get me started on Porsches unless you want another book-sized post. ;)

Ah, too much classical music!! Make it stop!!
lol, I'm kidding. But I don't think I'd make it playing that much classical music. The last two or three sets of books I did were all classical music, so I've tired of that. I took piano lessons for 6 or 7 years, but I'm taking guitar lessons now instead.

Good job, though :D

I was raised on Classical. But you might be surprised to learn that I really dislike Bach, Hayden, Handel, Mozart, and pretty much anyone from before the 1800's.

Post subject:  Re: Guten Tag

Hmm, that's kinda interesting... they all sound pretty similar to me :)
I used the Bastien books to learn piano, so I had a bunch of random songs in the beginner levels, and the intermediate levels were all classical stuff. I also got to do some contemporary Christian stuff on the side. I've been doing contemporary Christian in guitar, too.
Although I really don't listen to that kind of music :P Usually I listen to Christian rock or country. Maybe I should learn to play that kind of music eventually :)

So is writing music very hard for you? I've never tried writing music on piano, just using guitar chords (and I don't really know how well that worked out... I've only done one song so far).

I find melodies very easy, but I am not too good at the harmonies. I recently switched piano teachers to learn from the first person I've ever met who could actually give me advice about composing. So it's getting easier...I think. I haven't actually written anything new for more than a year, but I have some good ideas.

Yay, I love the first Arabesque! I'm learning it right now. I've been playing for... *counts on fingers*... around six-ish years. I'm trying to get into composing/recording, but I dislike the recording part. :? If you have any tips on composing (if it's possible to supply generic advice), I would love some. :D

I really suggest practicing composition as much as possible. My brother stuck at it, and now he's composing some really awesome music. (Now, mind, it's not classical. It's a Progressive Rock concept album, but Prog has the strongest classical influence of all rock forms, and songs range from ten minutes to an hour.)

Welcome, Matthew!

Wow, 13 years. That's a long time! And all of Chopin's Ballades... I'm really impressed! I've been playing for 9 years (I think, I'd have to ask my Grandma to know for sure!). Right now I'm playing a Haydn concerto, some ensemble music, Reverie by Debussy, and a contemperary piece by Melody Bober.

I've never tried really composing. The one time I had to, it was pretty awful. I guess some people are just more talented in that area! I do have a friend who is an incredible composer, though, and I'm a little jealous! :)

I'm the oldest of three, and my grandparents have... um... three grandchildren! :D

That is really cool!

I've been playing it since last summer... so I'm pretty far into it. I already competed with it, and now I'm just waiting for the spring recital! I used to like it a lot, but now I'm rather tired of playing it so much. ;) It's kind of funny, because after my competition, I was sure I was done with it, until I got home and found out my Grandma wanted me to play it in her recital. So back to the metronome I go... :D

I'm the oldest of 4, with the others being 7, 6 and 3. None of them are old enough to write yet and none of them show any interest in it, so I have to be content with my mom (White Raven.) Talk about reviving old threads!

So that's why you had a Porsche in your sci-fi avatar! You could photoshop a picture of it flying over a futuristic city, or trolling on Mars.

I found your synopsis utterly hilarious. If that's the way you write, you do have a successful sense of humor, whatever those autobiographers may say.

I enjoy Chopin, but most of his music is out of my range. At least the range of my patience. I've been playing piano off and on for six years or so. Writing and my business take up the center of my focus, but I still enjoy piano. I've composed a few little things here and there. It's like poetry for me; I can do it once in awhile with some success, but I do not have a perennial gift for it.

That is fascinating about your Chopin collection! (You really ought to give Bach a second chance, though.) Can you play "Fantasie-Impromptu"? "Funeral March"? "Raindrop Prelude"? (I can get the numbers for the latter two if you need them.)

Yes, I learned the Fantasy Impromptu when I was 14, and the Raindrop Prelude shortly after (it's quite easy...took me less than a week.) There are two Funeral Marches...the famous one is the third movement of his second piano sonata, and I have played it as well. The other is less known and a piece of its own, and I've only dabbled in it a little.

I've also played:
All 4 Ballades
All 4 Scherzos
The entire Piano Concerto in E Minor
The first movement of the Piano Concerto in F Minor
Etudes: Black Key, Revolutionary, Aeolian Harp, Butterfly, Ocean, Op. 10 No. 9, Op. 10 No. 11, Op 25 No. 10...and more I think.
A bunch of Nocturnes
At least eight Waltzes, including a few of the most famous Grand Valse things
Fantasy in F
Tarantella (this one is very fun)
Barcarolle
The Heroic Polonaise of course, and a few other Polonaises
Part of the Krakowiak (Grand Concert Rondo)
Rondo No. 1...Op. 8 I believe
A bunch of Mazurkas
The first and last movements of the third piano sonata

I wrote this all from memory so I probably forgot something...
