Greetings, denizens of Holy Worlds! I stumbled upon the site's Facebook page and decided that things appeared to be well worth looking into. I look forward to getting to know you all. Christian? Certainly. Writer? But of course. Fantasy buff? Goes without saying. I am currently a practicing author with little other occupation save household management (so why am I not getting more written?), with a husband, a husky and a beagle to provide a bit of excitement in life. I also have a preoccupation with exercise, as I'm hoping to fit into the clothes I wore eight years ago sometime in the near future. I'm currently attempting to "Walk to Rivendell," though I think the challenge is a bit unfair since both Bilbo and Frodo were able to rely on equine assistance a good bit of the way. I'm an amateur Celtic musician (singing and on cello), a former martial artist, and a recovering Anime addict. I've spent far too much time and money on Webkinz since 2007, and am hoping that someone will stage a Farmville intervention soon. I've participate in NaNoWriMo for four or five years now, but haven't finished a single time. I've got high hopes for this November. Any other NaNophiles here? - Lady Roundelais Sparr (best abbreviated as "Ro." ~_^) |

Hello, Lady Ro! No, I haven't participated in NaNo yet. I probably won't this year either. There's always next year though! Do you write anything other than fantasy? |

Welcome to Holy Worlds! The blessings of all free folk are with you! (That was a pathetic attempt at a Rivendell allusion...) Walk to Rivendell? Is this an exercise program? because it sounds fun... |

Welcome to Holy Worlds, Lady Ro! I wish you the best of luck with your clothes fitting quest! I must say, exercising always makes me feel really healthy. It's one of the reasons I love working as a staff member in the summer. ^^ Ah, Celtic music is so lovely. I personally adore the cello though I do not know how to play it. I just love it's rich sound. What sort of martial arts did you do? I've always been interested in learning it at some point. Recovering anime addict? I suppose that's a good thing? XD I'm into anime/manga myself, but I guess I wouldn't say I'm addicted to it. Every once in a while I enjoy getting into a good manga. ^^ I never got into Farmville, but I know many people who love playing it. I've never participated in NaNoWriMo before. Since I've never actually finished any of my novels yet (only short stories) I have always been too afraid to even try going up against a deadline. Until next time! ~Calen |

Welcome, Ro! Cello, you say? My litlest sister wants to play cello, but my mother isn't so sure. Apparently a half-size violin for someone who's not sure if they'll like it isn't quite the same as a cello for someone of like mind. (The violin was for my other sister - I play piano) Cellos are amazing instruments though. If I had all the time in the world, I would spend part of it learning to play string instruments. I used to play WebKinz! It's been years since I touched it, though. How odd - I never thought I'd hear of it again. As for NaNo, I just started last year, but I'll do it again. I have a series that will be entirely written during Novembers then put aside until I finish the one I'm doing the rest of the time. This could mean I have first draft novellas sitting around until I'm thirty. I found I worked better, though. Good luck this year. Hope to see you around a lot. (Not that I'm around that much, but I try.) |

Sorry I didn't manage to respond sooner - I'd started a response and tried to save the draft when I was interrupted, but apparently didn't quite manage it... Crushmaster - I do hope you'll join us for the month of novelling dangerously! Heaven knows I'll need as many taskmasters, er, companios as I can get. ~_^ Suiauthon - I've done a bit of poetry in my day, but most of my creative writing has a fantasy or fairy-tale bent. I wrote one semi-historical short story way, way back in 6th grade, but it was a miserable flop and I haven't felt inclined to try again. Jonathan - That's good to know! What's your specialty? Reiyen - This should be the proper link. Somone took the time to use a Middle Earth atlas to figure out the distances between significant locations in Middle Earth, and I'm tracking the miles I walk at the YMCA with the goal of matching Bilbo's trip to Rivendell. Granted, he was able to rely on equine assistance a good portion of the way! Philli - Thank you for the cupcake! I don't have anything up on YouTube at present, but if my sister and I manage to put together a decent set or two and start looking for gigs that could well change. Do you have a favorite Celtic artist or group? Calen - Thank you for your kind wishes! I've got a chronically low energy level (thyroid condition, long story) so I tend to find exercise more draining than energizing, but one must do what one must, ne? If you're fond of both Celtic music and cello, I can definitely recommend the albums that Alisdair Fraser and Natalie Haas have released. Scottish fiddle and a lovely cello accompaniment. Back in 2003 I was within a year of testing for my black belt in Shin Nagare Karate - which is a mixture of American Freestyle Karate and Tae Kwon Do. After I got married something happened with my job situation that made three classes a week less feasible (lousy commute and lousy hours), and then some financial constraints came into play. Since then I've developed some back and ankle problems that make jump kicks and throws less than advisable, so the odds are slim that I'll ever get back into it. I consider myself a "recovering" anime addict because while I still enjoy it, I don't devote as much time (or as many resources) to it as I did in the past. Our friends in the local anime club were starting to vote in a greater quantity of salacious material for viewing at meetings than they had in the past, and we decided to stop going. I hope you'll give NaNoWriMo a chance! The beauty of it is that the goal is to get something FINISHED, without having to worry about whether or not it's any good - you can always improve on it once it's got a beginning, a middle and an end. ~_^ Airianna - Agreed about the Gettys! The fact that our current church was using a lot of their music during worship while we were visiting (with a violin/cello/piano trio) was definitely a contributing factor when we decided to join. Elanor - I must know, what kind of puppy? *Revels in the glitter!* ^_^ Glitter is not something to be taken for granted, after all. Emmelina - Thank you for your kind welcome. I know that I'll feel at home here! Donn Quixote - I actually have to be careful about where I go in the NaNoWriMo forums in November, since I spent one November answering questions and barely got a thousand words down on my own story! Economy-sized cliff-divers, eh? Sounds like there's a story there! Aldara - Cello, indeed! My sister had wanted to play cello when the time came for her to choose her instrument for the orchestra program at school, but my mother wasn't keen on having to lug one all over creation. So, of course, my sister signs up for violin. Then my mother makes a car-pooling arrangement with a friend whose son (in my sister's class) plays cello, and she ends up lugging one anyway. By the time my turn to choose an instrument rolled around, my sister was proficient enough on piano and violin that I - being a competitive little cuss - wanted to play something she didn't. Therefore: cello! I think I managed to make ammends by giving her the month's worth of lessons my mother had already paid for when my private teacher made me cry because she thought I didn't practice enough. (I didn't practice enough, I don't practice enough, but bullying isn't exactly the best method of encouraging me to change my ways!) I rented a cello from 4th through 12th grade, then bought an instrument to take with me to college. While I'll always be an amateur who plays for my own enjoyment, it's definitely been worth it having access to the cello. I'd definitely recommend trying to rent for a bit if possible, to give your sister a chance to decide if it's the right instrument for her before committing fully. ~_^ And I think it'd be wonderful to have a large stack of first drafts sitting around when you're thirty! I wish I'd had that - as it is, I'm 31 and will be quite pleased with myself if I have a single finished first draft on my hard-drive when I turn 32. Thanks for the kind wishes! This COULD be the year! |

I don't really have a favorite Celtic artist, unless Patrick Ball counts. He's a Celtic harpist and I love his work, especially "Castle Kelly" from his CD Fiona. |

Even - Many thanks! I'm a "retired" technical writer/editor, so the grammar is very much a habit I strive to maintain. Automated spell-checkers are the bane of my existence however, as I find that I'm getting lazy on the spelling front. As far as Rivendell's concerned, welcome! I can always use a friend on the journey. ^_^ And thank you for the pie. Virtual pie, like virtual cupcakes, are beautiful things - I can have as much as I want without worrying about calories! Philli - I adore harp music! I'd love to have a quality lap harp some day (the tiny one I've got only has about an octave and a half of strings, the sound's tinny, and I'm missing a sharping lever), but of course I'd have to.... practice. Practicing has never been my forte. Nor my piano. *Smacks self to avoid additional music puns.* Ooh, looks like Mr. Ball has Castle Kelly up for streaming on MySpace. That's a lovely arrangement. I think I'm most familiar with Jerry Read Smith's version on hammer dulcimer. It's difficult for me to choose a favorite, but I'm particularly fond on Kate Rusby - partly because she's an alto (like me) and partly because she does a lot of ballads. Cherish the Ladies, Battlefield Band, Natalie McMaster and Loreena McKennitt feature pretty heavily in my CD collection. Natalie Haas & Alisdair Fraser's collaborations and Jerry Read Smith's Strayaway Child trilogy are currently dominating my playlists because they make excellent soundtracks for one of the worlds I'm writing in. |

Roundelais, A belated welcome to HW! I'm new here too. You wrote: Quote: Suiauthon - I've done a bit of poetry in my day, but most of my creative writing has a fantasy or fairy-tale bent. My own fantasy shows a continuing interest in fairytales, which were some of the things I first read. (Plus I was exposed to the Disney vision of such tales.) My Mother bought me lots of books of these. The Enchanted Book, Andrew Lang's volumes, a great big beautiful Golden Book of Chinese Fairytales. Fairytales are haunting. Tolkien took them to the limit and excelled in, e.g., The Silmarillion. Music is something I also use while working. There is a free on-line radio, where you can build your own stations of music you like: Pandora. It sounds like we have lots of musicians or aspiring ones in this thread. The piano used to be my instrument. I have a tremor now and so writing is my heart-response in the realm of the arts. I applaud your gift of responding to all those who speak with you! God bless you as you work and live for Him! |

Many thanks for the kind welcome, Maria. I've always had a fondness for fairy-tales, but I hadn't really thought about writing my own or using the classics as a basis for my own stories until after I did my capstone (something like a senior thesis) on the roles of women in the Grimms' compilation. I've been collecting fairy tales ever since. I love Pandora - especially the soundtrack station I set up last November. I love the piano but find it somewhat mystifying: so many complex arrangements! I know it would make more sense if I had ever actually practiced, but... *shrugs* My sister has recently offered to teach me how to play by chords, and I might just take her up on that. I'm sorry your physical condition keeps you from being able to play any longer. I'm very happy that you've turned to writing for your creative outlet, and hope that you'll be sharing some of your work here on Holy Worlds! - Ro |

Thank you, Ro, for your thoughts and words. Collecting fairytales? Doing tales like this of your own? Sounds great. Being new myself, I'm not sure if there are threads that explore fairytale things. If your interest in fairytales is strong, perhaps we could start a discussion that would be fun for others too. Your thesis sounds intriguing! Do you know the SurlaLune site? Soundtracks are some of the very best music done, I believe. I listen to them on my Pandora stations. They're motivating and inspiring. About sharing my work, I'm not yet sure how to do this. Guess it's time to dig into FAQ. Blessings as you work! |
