Crying seems to be our favorite topic in another thread, so here we can talk about it without getting off topic.

Um...I only cried over one book, "The Martyr's Song", never over a movie, and never when I'm in pain. The only times I cry is when something happens to my favorite sheep. :) Didn't expect that, did you?

um... I came REALLY close to crying in White from the Circle Trilogy. The ending is so amazing and sad at the same time!!!
I'm going to have to read The Martyr's Song. :D
You have favorite sheep?

Those books are so awesome! I probably cried at least once while reading them. I agree with the view of the Ancient Greek theatre patrons: It is good to feel sad emotions, as long as they aren't about real things. Hence, all their tragedies. :D

I always cry at the end of the Lord of the Rings Movies, but not at the end of the books anymore.

Oh, and I cried at the end of White, All of the Martyr's series, Rilla of Ingleside, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, A Cry From Iran (a documentary) and March of the Penguins (a movie)

What can I say? I'm an emotional teenage girl.:)

I'm must say, I'm not the crying type. Sometime about my 11th year, I decided I was not going to be emotional...and I'm not. At least on the outside. If you watch me closely during a movie (particularly a romance) you can spy little tears welling up. I really get into my books and since I'm a terribly moody person I actually have to be careful what I read. Since I deal with depression, I can actually hit a really low spot from reading a sad book! :) And at times like those I can cry about anything (as long as no one's looking) :D

Lol, Lady Naarah. That's funny-me too. I was ten. I haven't cried in ages...and yes, I have sheep. So when I had to help kill my favorite...well, I cried a little. But then I helped my dad kill her and tried to save her lambs...and their little hearts were beating but they couldn't breathe. Anyways, if anyone wants a tearjerker, you can e-mail me for the whole story, but I only cried once and then I steeled myself and I was okay.

Also, I cried once when my grandfather died, but it wasn't because of him, it was because of a severe emotional overload. I only cried a little though.

*sigh* So am I the only one who cries when she's happy, sad, or just when she feels like it? LOL!

Apparently, it's rare to cry!

I barely cry... I cried when my grandma died, but I haven't quite cried because of a book. I came close a couple times, but I didn't. I've heard a couple of you guys say something about the Circle Trilogy by Ted Dekker... I guess we'll see if that does anything :P

Yeah. It was pretty rough when you see their little hearts going and they're trying to breathe but they can't and...then I have to throw their bodies into a trailer and skin my favorite ewe. Yeah. But I only cried once before we killed her--then I was good.

You might be the only one, Mindy...unless Jay cries. :)

Hmmm... I think I will have to link to an article written by a friend of mine. I don't think she will mind. :) Basically, it is good to cry at the right times. Steeling yourself is not all that good in most instances. Something to think about.

Anyways, I do cry, but not extravagantly. I cry when I need to (like when God commands me to), and when it is appropriate (like when your great grandmother dies, or whatever). It helps when you are writing to be able to cry. I read that Alexander Dumas cried when Porthos dies in his story, and I do not blame him.

Jay: I don't steel msyelf, I'm just not a very emotional person. I'm kind of an introvert when it comes to my feelings, like I never share them. Ever. But I'm an extrovert when it comes to ATTITUDE. :)

LOL! Just because you're introverted about your feelings doesn't mean you don't cry though, Liagiba.:) I'm the same way. I don't tell my best friend, or even my mom how I'm feeling, but I still cry. (and I must add it drives them crazy when I just can't tell them what's going on.;))

I never share anything. I don't cry either, though. If I don't show my feelings, I don't show them at all. Crying, talking about them, etc.

Aww. I'm sorry. *hugs* At least for me, that would be really rough. I always feel so much better after I've hit my pillow, and punched the bed, and sobbed my eyes out.:D

I'm not really sorry, but okay...thanks, I guess! :) I get mad when I'm sad. Or I just cover it up. I'm kind of the pillar in my family when my dad's gone, so I guess I just learn to live with it. Although I'm going to cry in about August.

Me too! That always seems to help, along with talking to my mom sometimes. :D
I just don't cry much when I'm reading.

I cry, too. I just try not to do it around other people. I'm like you, Lady Naarah, I have trouble with depression. I've had a couple really low points. Usually, when I cry, it is either because something about a book has made me sad (i.e. a character I really really REALLY liked dies [authors just love to do that, don't we?], the book is over, or the series is over), I have hit some sort of emotional low, or I am just completely exhausted (good for writing, NOT good for the emotions). But I must say, it feels really good to have a thread wherein we can talk about crying. It almost makes me want to cry.

Interesting topic! :)

Well, I rarely cry. Mainly because I rarely have anything to cry about. God has blessed me incredibly, and I am thankful. I do cry in movies or books when someone that I really liked dies, especially when they are describing how much the family or friends are hurting. And also sometimes I start tearing up when I read or hear something that God has been doing in someone's life.

And also at times I just get feeling overwhelmed with... life. You know, you fall down and get a cut, and then you break your favorite cup, and then someone criticizes you or says something disappointing, and then you can't find your book, and then you have to do your least favorite job, and you are behind with your school, and you have a study the next day, etc... etc... :) But that sort of thing is usually my fault in the long run--I probably didn't have a good attitude to begin with or was focusing on the negative.

Oh, yes, and math. (Josiah reminded me) :) Well, not so much now that I'm older, but I used to cry over math pretty often.

When I do cry, I cry silently. I have not cried aloud since I was like, I don't know, 10? Or younger...

I was taught to control my crying from a young age. So that is mainly why I don't cry aloud. Also, I am not a very loud person on the whole. I don't scream, even when I am startled badly. I just jump. :) And sometimes gasp sort of or make other strange quiet noises.

I don't believe that it is right to never cry, and I don't believe it is right to cry over every thing. I think that you need a balance.

Anyway, there are my thoughts on the subject. Well, some of them. I could write more. But this is already long. :)

I used to cry over math too, before I turned ten. I think crying also has to do with the person. I am a very unemotional person, so crying isn't something that I do a lot. Mindy, Editor, and you guys are a little more emotional than I am. I still cry, but I do it seldomly because that's just my style.

My style (with emotions) is to box them up in side and deny them as long as I can until they go away. Not healthy, but it's how I work.

lol! Oh, WOW! Ya'll just brought back a bunch of horrible memories! lol...

My mother and I would BOTH break down and sob last year, just because I DID NOT UNDERSTAND algebra. LOL! She was frustrated as a teacher, and I as a student, and it was a wreck.

(Although now I look back on it, it was kind of funny ;) )

I cry easily, Mindy! You're not alone! :P I got it from my dad, who doesn't cry as easily as I do, who got it from my Omi (grandma), who cries more than I do. I really wish I didn't cry as easily, but oh well. :) As far as books, one time I can remember crying is when the little girl died in Uncle Tom's Cabin.

That was so sad! I think I cried then, too, the first time I read it. And I have often cried over...schoolwork. (Don't let me get started on the list. I was a very emotional child.)

I've almost cried my eyes out over ever single book I've read! But the few I've cried the most over is Rilla of Ingleside, Artimas Fowl, all Elsie Dinsmore books, and Eldest when Murtagh turned evil (no!!). Even though I never cry over movies I didn't cry when my Grandma died. I just shook violently and threw up. But I do cry when people have a Baby if I know them or not! I know I'm weird.

I don't often cry over books, and I can only remember once or twice when I did. Once when I read Shadow Over San Mateo by Lauraine Snelling, when Tricia's dad dies, after fighting cancer. I didn't sob, though, just had a couple tears roll down. :(
The only time I was actually sobbing was at the end of Smoky The Cow Horse by Will James. Weird, I know, but I love horses and it was SOOOO sad!!! :(
Sometimes I cry over good music, but it usually only gives me goosebumps. Once I cried over a piece of piano music I couldn't quite get the hang of...Funny thing is I'm not a terribly emotional person. I don't remember if I've ever cried over a movie. Cancel that, I cried at the end of ROTK when Frodo leaves Middle-Earth at the Grey Havens.

Me too. I got really stressed about my Christmas piece for piano last year and I cried then. That might be the only time I've cried over music.

I wouldn't say that I cry a lot, but I'm not a not-cryer. :D

Here's a funny story:
When I was about seven, my family went to a meeting at my cousin's house (we grew up like siblings; they lived two blocks away.) We kids played upstairs while all the adults had some kind of serious discussion in the dining room. When we got home, don't ask me why, but I was crying. I don't know if I was just tired, at an emotional low or fed up with something. But anyway, there I was, bawling my eyes out, alone, upstairs in my shared bedroom. Soon, my dad came upstairs, saw me crying and tried to comfort me. "What's wrong?" he asked. "Are you crying because [your cousins] are moving?"

Well, I hadn't known anything about my cousins moving, so then I had something real to cry about. I guess it was sad at the time, but now I can laugh about it. :D

I cried when Ellie died in UP, I cried when Brom died (even though the movie was bleh), I cry every time I watch The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (especially when Aslan dies) and I cried at the end of the Return of the King. And I often cry when too many disturbing, annoying or bothersome things happen to me in a day.

I'm trying to learn to cry on cue... can anyone here do that?

The only the book I've really come close to crying over was The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. Sad.

I saw you mentioned this, Alaethea, but did anyone else cry during the Pixar movie "UP"? :( I was bawling my eyes out! Well, holding it in, but I was watching it I definitely would have been. :) Bridge to Terabithia always manages to make me cry too. I cried to Rigoletto too when I was watching it alone...
What I really love is when I cry in worship, when I can feel God's presence so much. One of my friends said that in the presence of God some are dancers, some are weepers... I'm a weeper. ;)
Weeping to me is like a good sneeze, you feel good when it's over, now that you've let it all out - it's very cleansing! Except when you're just going through adolescence and you don't actually want to be crying and you know there's NO need for you to be crying... argh, that's frustrating.

Chris Rice's song Come to Jesus made me cry in church the first time I heard it. The thing was that there was a play to go along...that probably did it. ;)

I love that song! Another one is "From the Inside Out" by Hillsong (or Seventh Day Slumber). We sang that every night on a missions trip I went on, and I cried almost every time!

LOL! I can cry on demand. I can go into a panic attack on demand too.:) It's great if you happen to be an actress/drama queen, but when I was really little I'd use it to be manipulative.

I cried a bit in Up, also, Robyn. :) It was so sweet to see them together, and so sad to see him missing her afterwards.

I teared up a little bit in Up, too. :) Some of it was sad!!!
And I just finished the book Quo Vadis, and some of it made me cry. (It was a really good book, though it does show some pretty bad stuff that the Roman Emperor Nero did.)

Me too. I got pretty close when Brom died, especially at Saphira's line:
'Eragon, let him die with pride, as a Dragonrider.'
:( *sobs* Yeah, the movie was kind of bleh though.

I would have cried at that movie but my five-year-old brother who had already watched it kept saying "She's going to die, you know" and "At any moment she's going to die". So he kind of took the surprise and sadness out of it for me. Little brothers.

Oh goodness, I feel like such a sap now because I cry all the time. I've cried during books, movies, randomly....geez, I am a sap. Hahaha. Actually, it's good to cry every once in a while, it's very freeing.

lol. Nothing wrong with being 'sappy'. I think it's a shame the word has such a negative connotation!

I cry a lot, too. Usually to vent my anger, stress, fear, anything that is not happiness. I also cry out to God who is always there to help me.

Yes, I cry at movies... I cried in Up, too. The movie I cried hardest in was Hotel for Dogs, however. When the brother and sister are being separated. I know what that is like, in a way, except I was separated from my father when I was little (and very much against my will), so it was all very real for me. I also cried in Pirates of the Carribean I won't say where because for people that haven't seen the movie... well, it can spoil the effect.

No, I do not cry at books, but I have almost passed out at one... it was a little too graphic. But because I have allowed my emotions to be a little more relaxed (as in, I no longer steel myself against them) I can imagine myself crying if I read a book that was deserving of it in the future.

And I no longer believe that crying is sissy... :)

No it was not when I got hurt... =P You had to remind me about that!!! I was actually just talking about that the other day with my dad!!! It can't ever happen again, since my bed is on the floor now!

I don't remember... it was one of those historical fiction My Dear America (or something)... except it was the boy's version... I didn't really care, it's all history to me. But that got into too much detail concerning the amputation of his leg. Couldn't handle it. I haven't read one since.

I cry a LOT. At least once during certain hormonal times during the month :P... and I cry when I get emotional over dealing with anxiety and medical issues.

I don't cry a lot in books, but I did cry reading Pheonix Rising and teared up in Bridge to Terabithia. I cry evertime I see the movie Bridge to Terabithia. I cry when I watch chick flicks (like Bride Wars) and touchy feely dramas. I cry watching Pixar movie too! XD

Random fact/quote from my science book Exploring Creation with General Science: "...Of course, there is another reason we cry. Human eyes also release excess tears in response to strong emotional feeling, i.e.,when we are sad, we cry. Amazingly enough, the tears that we cry when our eyes are irritated are chemically quite different from the tears we cry when we are upset! Tears produced by strong emotions contain chemicals that do not apppear (to any great extent) in tears produced by eye irritants. These chemicals include manganese (a chemical depressant), eucine-enkephalin (chemical which helps control pain), and the adrenocorticotrophic hormone (a chemical produced by bodies under stress). When you excrete these chemicals by crying, the net effect is to make you feel better. By releasing these toxins, the tears serve to chemically and physically make the crier feel less depressed!"

Isn't God amazing in His creation?!?!?!?!? :D :D :D

I cry when I'm really lonely, when I miss my friends a lot. (Let's just say I haven't completely gotten over moving 2.5 years ago.)

I do control myself during films, though, because I'm typically watching with younger siblings, lol. I had a ton of trouble during UP, as in "please don't talk to me because I might just cry" - when Ellie died, and multiple times afterwords, like when Carl looks at their memory book, and stuff like that. That was a very sweet film.

I also teared up my first time through RotK (book), as in, "Frodo can't LEAVE!!!"

There probably were other books/films...but I haven't read very powerful books in a while. Hard to come by. ;)

When I was little (read: too young) for Elsie Dinsmore, I cried through the first (and second?) book, and didn't touch them again until I was 14 or so. :) But that was just so sad. The injustice of Elsie's father really got to me, particularly because I was about six at the time.

I try not to be a very crying person, but I can cry when I have to. :)
