Hello,

I stumbled across this site while searching for a Christian writing group to join. Since most of my stories tend have fantasy elements this seemed like a great spot to land. I'm looking forward to diving into the forums and getting to know you all.

I mostly write short stories, but after completing two NaNoWriMo contests I've developed an interest into writing a novel. I'm also an avid reader. I don't really stick to a particular genre as I read just about anything I find interesting. A quick glance at my bookshelf will reveal anything from a dictionary of imaginary places and western philosophy to Shakespeare and Raymond Chandler.

Welcome Roager sir!
Your song will cause quite a stir!
Because it will be the longest I have done!
In my songs I have rhymes, jokes, and maybe a pun!
You will find Holy worlds to be very fun!
We are all celebrating, God's holy son!

His love, his life, and his love.
The holy spirit; in the form of a dove!
He saved us from evil, from our own sin!
He saved Daniel; from the lions den!
You will find here; great women, great men!
Youl'll find a shield to protect you from evil, made from great copper, and tin!

Sadly this is the last of my lines.
I will now soon stop, with all of my rhymes.
But I hope you have fun, in this world of holies!
But right now>>> I"m going to stop rhyming! :dieshappy:

Oh and by the way: hi I am Svensteel! Or Namor... Or for some: Ramon?

Well, howdy-do! We're delighted to have you here! You've certainly come to the right place if you're looking for Christian writers to join forces with. Have a cupcake and make yourself at home!

Have you posted your short stories anywhere? Do you write a particular kind of fantasy?

And do you like Banana muffins? I hope you do, because here---*heaves a huge basket into your arms*---here are a hundred dozen of them. ;) They're hot from the oven. And here is a package of napkins, and this giant pitcher of farm-fresh, creamy, delicious raw milk, to go with the muffins. Oh, and here are some glasses and mugs.
Just a little welcome present. :D

See you soon, Roager!

We are stoked to have you, sir! Welcome to our humble forum. Could you tell us a little about your book and what first attracted you to writing with a fantasy edge?

Nothing posted here yet, but I had some stories posted on a website which were later removed, along with the rest of the content on the site, after massive coding issues forced them to wipe the slate clean.

I would say the majority of fantasy I write falls into the urban fantasy and magical realism genres. Low fantasy if you want to get technical. Realistic characters and settings with some fantasy mixed in.

Quote:
Could you tell us a little about your book and what first attracted you to writing with a fantasy edge?

The working idea of the story is that it takes place in fantasy world on the closing end of a magically influenced version of the industrial revolution. Living standards have improved, swords and shields have fallen obsolete to firearms, and magic is now strictly regulated by the governing coalition and restricted for military use only. The coalition formed agencies to confiscate magically infused items from the populace and to investigate rumored locations of ancient magical artifacts. So if someone happened to move a cabinet and find a tattered leaflet that vaguely mentions the location of a fabled ring, which allows its user to levitate chairs and flip hats, the agency would be sent out to investigate.

The main protagonist is a man who was on the losing side of a civil war, had a brief stint with the above agency, and now owns a local tavern. The city he resides in is a mishmash of species and clashing cultures trying to adapt in this fast changing world. Corruption, racism, and other unpleasant sounding words are commonplace within the city. As is stabbing, which has nearly become a valid form of currency among the unfriendlier residents.

He reluctantly gets involved in the search for a missing young woman who witnessed the racially motivated murder of a dwarven socialite. As he probes deeper into the city’s underbelly he can’t shake the feeling that something more sinister may be involved.

The main attraction I had to writing with a fantasy edge is that fantasy, along with sci fi, is an amazing genre to work with the “what if?” question. Although I love reading and writing realistic fiction, I find the idea of unhooking my imagination and being able to do anything within my stories exciting. I’m drawn to writing stories in modern, realistic settings with fantastic elements mixed in. I love the idea of a mundane world suddenly being interrupted by something that, to the common observer, is fantastic and wonderful and shouldn’t be possible. Or a rational world where non-rational events are an everyday occurrence.

Bah. This was a longer post than I thought it was going to be.

Hey, I enjoyed reading it. Don't worry about the length. :D

That is actually a very interesting premise. I'll look forward to seeing some excerpts.

So the “what if” is what captures your fancy? Do you think there are any restrictions on your writing, as a Christian author?

I guess that depends on which restrictions you mean. Themes? Subject matter? What to show and hold back? My short answer is no, I do not think there are any restrictions on my writing as a Christian author. Of course I'll use common sense. If I’m writing a story intended for all ages or for younger children then I’ll definitely show restraint, but if I’m intending the story for a more mature audience then my writing will reflect that.

But that doesn't mean I'm going to go ahead and litter my story with extreme content just because I can. If a Christian writes a violent scene for the sake of showing violence or a risque scene just to titillate the reader, then I would say they need to show constraint, but I would also say the same to a writer who is not Christian. Scenes such as those that do nothing to further the plot or add to character development is just poor writing.

However, if a story needs to show a particularly violent scene that is essential to move plot, to expand character development, has meaning, and is honest, then I think it should be included. I also think the level of detail involved in those scenes is dependent on the story and comfort level of the author.
