Well, the title basically sums it up but for those of you who didn't know, the One Ring was cast into Mount Doom on this day, May 25th. So how do y'all plan to celebrate? I'm planning on going home watching the filmed reenactment while eating strawberries with cream.

 I like your celebration idea.

*isn't doing anything celebratory* Maybe I'll dress up like an elf and walk around my house singing in elvish, just to see the face my sister gives me. ;)

I'll begin planning a sci-fi project titled "Devil Squadron" with the song "Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer" as their theme.

I'll also pass my vocabulary final. Tolkien would be proud.

I'm going to memorize a few elvish insults and tell everyone I know what today is. :D

Perhaps this is not very Christian of me to say, but that sounds like a good idea. I may try that sometime...or I can memorize the passage on the one ring in its original dialect. That would be cool. :D

Question! Does Middle Earth operate by standard earth dating? How do we know that it was May 25th?

Haha. I only use them with people who know they are in fun... Whatever they mean. :P Ooh, good idea. :D *thinks about memorizing Nimrodel*

@Vanya: I believe the Shire basically followed our calender... I could be wrong, though.

Tolkien figured it out for us and gave the dates in our own calendar system (this is of course by the Shire Reckoning, since the Gondor Calendar was reset upon the destruction of the ring, making it January 1st).

Orcish ones sound worse without actually being too insulting. ;)

So wait a second. Gondor's new year is January 1st? Isn't it bad enough that our calender has a kind of random new year; but Gondor's does too?
*is a bit calender obsessed*

No, when the ring was destroyed they moved the new year to then. It doesn't line up with our year.

Right, after the ring was destroyed, the Shire's May 25th became Gondor's January 1st.

I was gonna bust ya'lls bubble, but Melody beat me to it. Of course, today is the fourth anniversary of my beginning my work in the Red World stories, so I'll celebrate something anyway...
(besides, we can celebrate the death of Sauron any day of the year, because that means he's not around to come charging out of the south when we least suspect it or subvert the UN with rings...)

Maybe I'll rememorize the poem about the one ring.

Nope. There's no way that Mount Doom is in Guatemala, although I know there are generic volcanoes down there (it was active when I visited). It'd be more likely to find it in South Eastern Europe, but if I recall correctly it was essentially destroyed in the destruction of the One Ring. Not to mention the approximately 12,000 years that would have passed since then would have covered any old remains of the place, as well as any reconstruction/rehab efforts of the 4th Age. Of course, that is the ultra-literal interpretation of Tolkien stuff, by which his stories are set in an ancient time of our own world.

I see, but I thought the world was around six thousand years old? Oh well, I am glad that I will not be seeing any black riders anywhere near Guatemala.

Yes, it is, but the Middle Earth myth is an old earth one (though still creationist). It isn't "accurate" by any means. :D

I assume because of the roads over there. I hear that it will be twists and turns. When my family moved down from up North we would pretend we were on the journey to Mordor. Though, Florida is not quite Mordor. I feel blessed living here.
