How much money do freelance editors cost? When should you consider using one? What kind of services do they offer? Post here if you have any references.
I've heard you can get them from $300-2000 and up. It also depends on what kind of edit, the size of the story, their reputation, etc.
I would suggest making a story bible while you write, then after you've finished it and given it some time in a drawer, run through your own edit before considering sending it off to a freelancer.
There is debate over whether or not to send it to an editor before sending it to an agent or publisher. I would consider that unnecessary if you believe your editing process was sufficient to at least present a professional submission. I don't know if agents edit, but I get the feeling they would or have someone look it over before trying to sell it to a publisher.
The other thing I'd like to mention is that our community offers a great advantage in this area as far as having a stable of potential beta readers. Get to know people and see whose style matches your editorial preferences and see how you can help each other.
