Aside from Tolkien, (obviously)
My favorite book ever was "When Heaven Weeps" By Ted Dekker. It brings to life the incredible love God has for us.

Yeah, that whole series is phenomenal. "The Martyr's Song" had me crying. Anything by Ted Dekker or Frank Peretti is amazing. I escpecially like "Blink" and "Thr3e" by Dekker. I like "Mara, Daughter of the Nile" by Eloise Jarvis McGraw for girls (and Jay, just kidding). Mara is an amazing character I can really relate to. "That Printer of Udell's" by Harold Bell Wright is amazing. Obviously, Lord of the Rings. "Ivanhoe" by Sir Walter Scott is amazing (one of my top three) and so is "The Talisman". "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Hard Times" by Charles Dickens are outstanding. Avi's books are really good, escpecially the Crispin books, "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" and "Midnight Magic". I like "The Binding of the Blade Series" by L.B. Graham, the "Oracles of Fire" and "Dragons in Our Midst" series by Bryan Davis as well. "The Dark is Rising" series by Susan Cooper is really good. Finally, a shockingly girly series by Sandra Byrd that I actually enjoyed, the "Friends for a Season" series. They are pretty good, and "Red Velvet" is the best. That's all I can thing of....

Oh wait! The Left Behind Series (both of them) by Jerry Jenkins & Tim Lahaye, the "Babylon Rising" series by Tim Lahaye, and "Riven" by Jerry Jenkins.

Ann Rinaldi writes good historical fiction for girls with real, believable characters. "Annie, Between the States" by L.M. Elliot is good and so is the Refiner's Fire Series by Jane Austin (I thnk that's how you spell it) is good as well, for girls.

ewwwwwww! L.B. Graham? Lol! JK! I used to love that series until I took a class in editing...and then his whole writing style started irritating me.

I also LOVE the entire Anne of Greene Gables Series. I have laughed so hard through those that I'm sure I must have added years to my life span.

Also, The Silmarillion, and C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy.

I know what you mean about L.B. Graham, I just love the plot. He's not really the greatest writer, but I love the spiritual lessons and the plot of his stories.

Well...he uses so much Deus Ex Machina that I ended up feeling really let down. I get the idea that we need God to help us do everything, but most of the time he gives us resourceful ideas!

I love Wayne Thomas Batson's books, esp. the Door Within Trilogy. Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire are both outstanding series. I love the Circle Trilogy (the only series that has ever made me come anywhere close to crying). I liked Artemis Fowl for something that is easy to read. And I love absolutely ANYTHING by J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis!

Have any of you read the Screwtape Letters? I think they're wonderful! And they have an audio drama of them now!

I haven't read them... yet. I have to read them for school later this year, and I can't wait!

I don't know I haven't read anything Ted Dekker sadly (My Mom wont let me) But I know Frank Peretti so I kinda have to go with him

oh. Ok. Well, I have to admit that I haven't read many of Peretti's adult books. Only the Oath, and Monster. I guess I'm not a good judge.

Right now my top favorite is Eternity's Edge. It's from his new trilogy, Echoes from The Edge. Even better than the first book. I can't seem to get my hands on the third though.

Where to begin??? Well, Edge of Eternity by Randy Alcorn is a must read. Eli by Bill Myers is also good. Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens. The Wilderking Trilogy by Jonathan Rogers? is neat.
For girls -I love the Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace. I don't know how easy they are to find... but you have to start at the very beginning, when she was a child. I know it's a pain, but then you can follow her up to adulthood.
Also Melody Carlson's books - but specifically the Caitlin series. LOVE those books!
Francine River's Mark of the Lion series. MUST be read w/ discretion, though. Good books... she mixed in a bunch of inappropriate content, however. Sadly. But they're stillvery good books.

Yep. The books are nice because even though they contain a bit of romance (nothing serious enough to make my younger sister squeak, though), it's all pure and, well, Christian. And the plots are twisty and addicting.

One of my favorite series is Redwall (Brian Jaques, there's like 20 books in it) , I don't know if anyone else has heard of it . . . but definately one of the best series I have read.

I know I have other favorites, but as soon as I decided to type them down they all flew out of my head like a bunch of birds . . . I hate when that happens.

Unfortunately, I don't read a lot of new books, I have a delicate taste in literature. Something perverse, explicit gruesomeness or just anything that feels wrong throws me off. I couldn't handle the Last Sin Eater by Francine Rivers for some of those reasons . I'll check out some of these, though! They look pretty good.

I've read most of the Redwall series too! Some of them are pretty good, but I don't think I've read the newest two.

Thanks Griffin, I'm glad to find another Redwall appreciator. My current fantasy series was inspired in part by Redwall.

By the way, the two newest books are arguably the best. Doomwyte is really neat, it has lots of elements that I love.

If we start discussing older literature, I'd have to jump into the discussion. My Tapestry of Grace Curriculum has made sure I've read just about every major work of literature since Beowulf. (and some not so major; had anyone heard of Chanson de Roland or The Tragical History of Dr Faustus? )

Well, I don't recommend most of the books I read. They are Christian, but I have some kind of reading habit that tips me off when I'm going to disagree with an author before it happens, and then I don't enjoy the rest of the book. (I still haven't totally figured out how it works, or why for that matter. For convenience will call it my Theological Disagreement Preemptive Warning System [TDPWS])

Lewis's Space Trilogy is an interesting topic. They demonstrate a flare for horror that few people recognize in Lewis. I think these are must reads for anyone who plans on writing Sci-fi. However, by the end of the first paragraph, all three of these books had already set off my TDPWS.

Anything Tolkien (even his translations). Tolkien's books could be considered the essential for fantasy writers, especially those who like to work some philosophy into their stories.

I'm incredibly disappointed (just kidding) that no one has mentioned Echoes From the Edge, by Bryan Davis. (I wanted to write Brian Jacques for some reason...)

Honestly, I was amazed by the drama his use of music afforded. The series could be considered a Sci-fi/fantasy crossover, but I think it should be classified as fantasy. The scientific elements are superficial, whereas the fantasy elements form the backbone of the story.

Those are the books that come to mind at the moment.

I'm in the middle of the Space Trilogy. I think they're good, but they are taking me a long time to read. They're the only sci-fi books that I've ever read.

I've read the Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire series by Bryan Davis, but I haven't read the other one yet. I'll have to find them at the library!
