I saw Calenmirel's thread asking you all if you are left or right handed, and I thought I would firstly try and make my first ever poll, and secondly make a poll so it is easier to see how many of HWers are right or left handed! :D

Calenmiriel wrote:
Question: Are people often shocked or surprised to find out you're left-handed? Have you ever told them the corny joke, "I'm left-handed which means I'm the only one in my right mind!"? (Hee hee, I have!)

That is hilarious, Calen! I am definitely going to use that because like you, I am left handed! Has anyone read the book (no offense intended) "The Natural Superiority of the Left Hander"? It's actually quite a funny and intriguing read about the differences between right and left handers.

Ambidextrous is someone who can use both hands for some or all things. E.g. my cousin is Ambidextrous in the way that he plays golf left handed, eats left handed, plays cricket right handed, and I think he writes right handed. A plain left hander or right hander is someone who will naturally do everything with either left or right hand.

I'm a right-hander. ;)

My teacher said she thinks she was supposed to be left handed. She does everything except write with her right hand.

:? Question: Do left-handers eat with their right hands or their lefts?

Post subject:  Re: Left or Right?

I'm right handed, but I can eat and write with my left hand. This becomes a very useful trick when seated next to a left handed kid. Otherwise you'd be bumping elbows. ;)

I'm run o' the mill right-handed, and I have a callous to prove it. I think being leftie is cool because it's not as common. I had no idea Almond was a leftie!

We were just talking about this on my screenwriting forum. Did anyone notice - Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon (the movie) is left-handed? I think it's really neat.

@Shawn: I hold my fork, spoon, and knife in my left hand. It's not uncommon to bump elbows at the dinner table in my family since I'm seated on the right of my mom. I eat with my right hand when I'm cutting something with my knife though. ^^

If I recall correctly, only 21% of the world's population is left handed. (Don't ask how they figured that one out. I have no idea.)

I did, however, find out the statistics through some pre-movie previews in the movie theater.

Not just you. ;) :D I have a question, to ambidextrous people: When it comes to just holding something, say a water bottle, what do you prefer? Are either of your hands stronger, and does your opposite handwriting look terrible, like mine? :P

My younger sister is ambidextrous when it comes to writing. She has bad posture when she uses her right hand (but she would prefer it) but has good posture and writes a little neater with her left hand. (But she doesn't like using her left as much as her right)

It depends. I only write with my left hand, but I can write very neatly with my right hand if I try. And I don't mean, my own unique handwriting. When I write with my right hand it looks like something out of an elementary school book text. (Maybe I'll post I comparison later.) ;P

I hold a glass with my left hand, I kick and throw things with my right hand, I switch the racket between both my hands and and use it equally in tennis, badminton, and racquetball, I stir things with my left hand, and I turn doorknobs with my right hand. *ran out of examples*

Post subject:  Re: Left or Right?

It is very hard to turn door knobs with your feet, unless you are barefoot. Turning door handles, though, just takes some experience. I used to try to do light switches with my feet. That would take more practice than I have given it so far, especially now that I have a door chained to me disrupting my balance.

Post subject:  Re: Left or Right?

That's fascinating, Calen.

I can open screen doors with my bare feet. You know where you have to push the button in and then pull the door out? I'm very proud of the accomplishment.

When I write with my left hand it's excruciatingly slow but it so much neater than my right hand. The slant is absolutely perfect, etc. Odd. Writing with my feet is barely legible.

I've never tried drawing with my left hand.

Haha about eating Bush. I eat that way too, but from what I understand it's a cultural thing. American's put their knife down and switch their fork back to their right hand for every bite, the rest of the world just eats with their left hand.

Author:  BushMaid [ February 24th, 2011, 3:28 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Left or Right?

Really? I did not know that! My little brother keeps getting picked up on it at the table because he uses his right hand to eat without his knife. We keep having to remind him to swap.

Although my other brother is right handed, and he made the swap easy, and uses his fork in the left hand all the time now.

Usually I turn doorknobs with my elbow. :D When my hands are full I wrap my arm around the knob near my elbow and turn my whole body around the knob to turn it. :D It works!

I've got you all beat for opening doors. You know in public bathrooms, after you've washed you hands, you don't want to get them all dirty on the door. So I open it with my shoulder blade. Yes, my shoulder blade. I make it stick out of my back, and stick it through the little handle, than walk side-ways until the door is fully opened. Then I have to move very quickly to get my foot in front of the door, to keep it from closing. But my hands stay clean!
