Post your review of Starfire, in the SF Series Intro category, using the review system. Neil of Erk's Review = 10/12 Prose Rating: +2. Stockton's prose is wonderful throughout the book. Stockton shows a wonderful grasp on his world that allows him to write as if he were an author from that world, but at the same time, his meanings are always clear to the reader. Characters Rating: +1. Stockton presents realistic characters who interact well with the plot. Some of the characters are similar to stereotypical warstory-characters, but generally behaviors and relationships are unique and well written. All the characters are fully developed and none of them did anything their character shouldn't have done. Theme Rating: +1. Starfire is very much a war book. It deals with themes of fallen comrades, ethical questions, and broken promises. These themes are clear, interesting, and thought provoking, but never forced. Starfire illuminates themes that readers will not encounter very often. Plot Rating: +2. The plot is excellent, stirring, and well done. The twists surrounding Nazjean were very good. I don't want to reveal the plot, so all I can say is that this is truly an epic plot system. Content Rating: +2. Content is hardly a problem in Starfire. As such, there's not much to say about it. Setting Rating: +2. Despite having no map, the locations and complex world are never distracting. The glossary at the end was helpful, but I found that I did not need to refer to it as often as I feared. Over all, this complete different world is fascinating. |
