So is everyone really excited about the new Hobbit movie? I was thrilled that they were going to start filming in February! Until I saw...this...

Celearas wrote:
I'm actually more worried about rumors about this character called Itaril. She's this Mirkwood princess who basically sounds like a horrible Mary-Sue, with her Speshul Talent! with the sword and the bow and how she's Independent! Don't need a man! until she falls in love (possibly with Erestor, Elladan, or Elrohir) and how she's Really Beautiful! I'm worried about this. For more info, see theonering . com's Hobbit section under something like "Female characters in the Hobbit."

*sputters* THIS IS SACRILEGE!

What is this I hear about a new female character in The Hobbit?!?!?!    That's horrible! Galadrial, I could see maybe. There aren't any female characters at all in the Hobbit, so putting her in somewhere, like in Imladris might make sense. Legolas would even make sense being a mirkwood prince and all!

But sticking in a warrior princess? *has a seizure* that's awful!

Disgusting, ghastly, egregious. I really thought that Peter Jackson did a good job with the Trilogy. He managed to stay faithful and was a genius for special effects. And although I normally despise warrior princesses, he managed to pull Eowyn off well, too. :D

But my faith in him is now severely shaken. This had better just be a rumor...

Has anyone else heard anything of how the "Hobbit" production is going?

He. would. never!

Even worse (if such a thing is possible), when you google "female characters in the hobbit", you find stuff about possibly making one of the dwarves a girl! Thankfully, that's only on non-official websites... :pale:

Besides, if Peter Jackson ever dared to mangle the movie that badly, he would have all of Holy Worlds after him!

I know I certainly wouldn't go support that stupid movie.

*titters* A girl dwarf??? Now, if that wasn't so stupid and wrong and unfaithful to the book...it might be hilarious. XD And interesting! Maybe.;) Especially if woman dwarves really do have beards. ;)

That might not be as annoying as this Itril character. I can just see her. This gorgeous little woman with flowing hair running around in skimpy clothes and somehow beating men twice her size. :P So, so, dumb. :(

The fundamental problem I see with The Hobbit is that they're trying to make it another Lord of the Rings.

As a screenwriter: If in truth there isn't a strong female character in the book, I'm not surprised that they're adding one.

As a viewer: That sounds perfectly dreadful.

Here's the casting call that starting everything on TORC
Quote:
ITARIL - female, A woodland Elf, this character is one the Silvan Elves. The Silvan Elves are seen as more earthy and practical. Shorter than other elves, she is still quick and lithe and physically adept, being able to fight with both sword and bow. Showing promise as a fighter at a young age, ITARIL was chosen to train to become part of the Woodland King’s Guard. This is the only life she has ever expected to live, until she meets and secretly falls in love with a young ELF LORD. This role will require a wig and contact lenses to be worn. Some prosthetic make-up may also be required. LEAD. AGE: 17-27.

The main thing that scares me is "lead."
I like strong females. I really do. But putting a woman in just for the sake of having a woman is really demeaning. And she's just so generic sounding!
And yes, it's circulating on TORC that some of the dwarves might be passed of as possibly female, because apperantly in the book there are some dwarves who are never addressed as "he." I don't get this. What are they going to do? Have her/him checking his/her hair in some pond? Bring along a beard straightener? I don't get it.
One last rumor I've heard (which is hardly a rumor, just a "wouldn't-it-be-cool-if") is that mini Aragorn might appear. It would work for the timeline, he is in Rivendell at this time. Personally, I think it would be cool if we just saw a little of him. And I want to see Gilraen, too! I absolutely love her.

Remember though, these are rumors. Completely unofficial. Don't boycott the movie, people. And don't give yourself heart attacks.

In other news, they're keeping the production in New Zealand! Woop woop!

Well apparently Dwarf women look like Dwarf men anyway... XD

I'm not going to say anything bad about the movie until I see it. Maybe it won't be too horrible. Then again, maybe it will, and I'll be back here ranting.

**makes face** From a screenwriters' perspective, there are lots of other interesting ways to bring in a female lead without resorting to that kind of stereotypical nonsense. But, it's easy............

@Celearas -- I've been wondering about a young Aragorn ever since I heard that the Hobbit was going to be made into a movie. I sincerely doubt the filmmakers will be able to pass the chance up to cameo him like that. (The Hobbit is, after all, largely marketed to the LotR fanbase)

Ditto for Legolas. Will. not. be. surprised. if Legolas has a large part. [I actually think that Tolkien might have included Legolas at least a little if he'd written the Hobbit after LotR... just for continuity.]

I actually wouldn't really mind if they put Legolas in... as long as it's only a little bit. Technically, he would have been there, being the prince of Mirkwood and all. ;)

Yeah, that's very logical. I wouldn't mind it as long as they didn't do anything... strange. :)

(...what's not logical is some of the stunts they gave him in the LotR films, at least, if I correctly understand what people have told me about some battle sequences therein. ;))

The stunts aren't THAT bad. I can see the book Legolas doing them. They just aren't ALL mentioned.

Oh, I'm sure book-Legolas had plenty of fun stunts. ;) I just heard some questions about the physics of some of the ones in the movies. (which is very typical for movies, of course!! XD with modern CGI, anything can happen.) I was making a wisecrack and trying to be funny. :P

(this is coming from the one who said "Susan can THROW arrows and actually kill Telmarines with them?!?!?" in a very shocked tone after seeing trailers to PC...Fantasy films are not kind to the laws of physics and realism. ;D)

That annoyed me to death!

On topic: A female character wouldn't be so bad--but y'all are right, the LEAD does scare me as well. I mean, if she were a minor Mirkwood character, it would be perfectly understandable, I think, but--ugh.

Also, Tolkien doesn't really develop at all the long time Bilbo spends in the wood elves' palace--for a movie, there's a lot of potential development that could go on there.

But Peter Jackson didn't develop the time Frodo stayed in the Shire before leaving, the stay on Lothlorien, and many other things so I can't see purposely making it long enough when the seriously long stuff was ignored.

I think this rumor is just that...a rumor.

I've watched the Appendices to the Extended Edition of LotR, which detail the process of creating the movies. A character like Itaril is certainly not Jackson style. Every time Jackson strayed from the book in LotR he had a very logical reason for doing so. There is very little need for such a female "lead" in the Hobbit.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm with Neil. I too have extensively watched the appendixes. Jackson is passionate about Tolkien's work. He idolized the books as a child. Anytime something needed to be changed for cinematic purposes he had, as Neil said, a logical reason and it was always with the spirit of the books in mind. He remained true to the story, even in his changes. The essence of the book was still in them. I can't see Jackson pulling a stunt like this. I’m sure there will be changes, possibly even new characters, but I think they will all remain true to the story being told, and have typical Peter Jackson flair.

I don't know if any of you have heard, but the first part of the movie will cover most of the book. Part of the second movie will be the end of the book and the rest will be bridging the gap between the Hobbit and LotR. It will have the White Council and the expulsion of Sauron from Mirkwood, as well as more probably.

You want a mini-Aragorn? Go to www.bornofhope.com and watch the fan made movie.

I just watched this, and it was amazing. Elladan and Elrohir rock! And the "mini-Aragorn" is so cute! :D

Me, me, me!

Beren & Luthien is one of the few romantic stories I actually like. <grin>

I wonder if they might make the Silmarillion into a movie.

I preferred Arathorn.

I could care less.

That's why the Hobbit will be two movies instead of one.

We should start a petition to ask Peter Jackson to make a Beren and Luthien movie after The Hobbit.

Ugh.
I actually have never had even the slightest interest in Beren and Luthien, which makes me SUPER sad given who they were based on, but I just can't like them.
They wouldn't make a Sil movie. It's the most untheatrical book ever; too many characters, people you never see ever again, too much cultural stuff...
It's my favorite book, but there's no way in all Ea they'd ever make it.
A movie about the a certain person living in that time in one specific place, however, would work and be the single most awesome movie on the planet.

How about that guy who married his sister, killed the dragon, and then killed himself? His story was always interesting.

I don't think it would be changed much, the only changes in LotR were unnecessary parts or parts that were to long to be in a movie.

Turin Turambar? His story is really sad though...

Agreed -- the Sil. is not cinematic at all. They'd probably only take chunks of it and make lots of movies, or else condense it way too far.... nope, I think they'll let it go entirely. (unless it were a tv series. That has a slim chance of working, but not much due to the thousands of years it covers)

Plus I kinda doubt Christopher Tolkien would let them at this point.

(I want to do a fanmanga of it, though. That would be awesome.)

@Varon -- all of it is too long to be a single movie. ;)

That's what his name was, I forgot.

It does cover thousands of years.

Oh, what about an Imax documentary?

Turin! Yeah, I love that story. :P But with that ending it probably wouldn't make a very successful movie.

Yeah, and with the incest and all; too many Big Real Life Issues and too big a fraction of the audience that would get freaked out or even offended by that. I think it would be cool, though. That whole family is so awesome and sad and messed up.
I'd love a Hurin movie. Or one about Haleth! Yeah! Or Maedhros. Or Nerdanel. I'm actually super interested in her. Ohhh, or Maeglin. That would go kind of along with the issues with Turin and Nienor, though. I don't know. I agree with whoever said a TV series would be cool.

Maedhros is always a very interesting character to me. There was something about the end of his story that always bugged me, though. (he threw himself and one of the Silmarils into a deep chasm) The entire incident didn't seem to fit with his earlier personality to me; it felt like perhaps he and his other remaining brother had been switched.

They didn't know they were siblings. And there are so many worse things in movies that I think they could get away with it. (not that we want to get away with it, but it isn't treated as a good thing...I think it would be fine as long as there weren't any bad scenes...)

I would love a Turin Turambar movie. :D And a Beren and Luthien Movie. And a Farmer Giles of Ham movie too. :D

The Lay of Turin is one of my favorite Middle Earth stories. I keep wanting to compile all the different versions into one coherent re-telling of it. That would be fun. Turin's sword actually inspired Kimensul.

* chuckles and ignores the whole Susan-throwing-arrows thing because people would get angry at him for defending it *

A ten year old Aragorn would be fun to see. :)

Hmm... if they add a disgusting feminazi thingamabob person, I would 'be very put out.'

Of course, you know, there was a female in the book...

Though it would take a serious amount of hollywood insane magic to turn Lobelia into an elf princess... :P

If it's not an official site I wouldn't believe it, they say anything these days. I'm personally really excited about The Hobbit coming out, I can't wait to see it and I fancy it's going to be a family visit to the cinema for us as my Mum has always loved The Hobbit! I hope they haven't spoilt it :) They've been working on it for a long time so I'm hoping it will be brilliant. :)

Maybe one for Feanor.

Does anyone remember what the original issue was?

Super cool mega ultra elf Mary Sue chick casting call.

I just put it up because she's on the discussion boards on a million different Tolkien sites. If it was just on one I wouldn't care, but I just thought I'd throw it out there, and then this thread was made and people starting freaking out then we started talking about the Sil.
