Post subject:  To Write or Not to Write
Hello all,
So I've been debating with myself lately whether I should try and get back into writing again or if the timing's bad. See, the thing is I have a major issue with procrastination, especially when it comes to school work (which is a big deal in college. It's way easy to get behind). I've told myself that with God's help this would be the semester to turn that all around, but... I have a feeling that if I try and pick up writing again right now, school would fall to the way side again, which would be a big problem. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that if I can't find the time to write in college, I'll have an even harder time finding time once I'm out. So there's a big part of me voting for each direction. What do yall think?

I'm not in college yet, so I probably don't have the amount of work you do, but I am definitely a procrastinator! I'll leave my least favorite stuff to do last, and when I get there, I'll take a "short break" (yeah right!) and end up not getting everything done! So I can relate!
But, all that said, I do think you should at least write a little bit, especially if you want to write for a living eventually. Just like an athlete would take time out of his day to practice whatever sport, you should take time to write! (Though, to me, it seems like you do spend time writing - you write essences and do some worldbuilding on here! Just saying. :) )

I'm sort of in the same boat except I'm a senior so I'm finishing off school and going to have to work hard to get everything finished by spring. I have several things I have to get done by December, so I'm taking a break from writing (not that I've done much since last spring anyways) until January when I'll just have school. For now I just do little writing exercises (Random Spurts of Words) so I can truthfully admit to myself that I have written recently. ^^

By the way, I'm a terrible procrastinator as well. -_-;; *half-hearted cheer* Procrastinators, leaders of tomorrow!

I wouldn't think of college as binding you off from your writing, but you'll just have to figure out a certain time to write, like PrincessoftheKing was saying. :D

What do you mean by "writing?" Serious writing? Yeah, maybe put it on hold for a while. But just writing, as in, short stories, little bits of plotlines, ideas hastily scribbled down, no. I don't think a person who truly loves to write can ever really stop writing, our brains would explode. Also, you don't want to get out of practice. Writing is such an organic process, you're constantly trying to get better.
But yeah, I would put any serious, novel writing on hold. School should come first. You can always go back to writing a novel, but school is way too expensive and way too important.

Which is why I hesitate to add actual like story-writing into the mix ;)

Basically anything beyond the odd poem here or there, which is all I've written for the past 4 years. Before that I never wrote anything longer than one short-story. What I'm asking is if I should try writing stories of any length again.

I also understand about the procrastinating. It must come along with the creative mind or something. :roll:

I'm pretty much in the same situation as Calenmiriel. I'm a senior and trying to focus on getting past graduation. With all the study, writing sometimes gets in the way. Other times I'll have a few days where I can write before exhaustion or sickness take over.

I say to write whenever you get the chance. Or at least make sure you do occasionally. It was once explained to me that a writer's mind is like an athlete. It has to stay in shape and remember the skill. So in a way, I guess practice really does make perfect. :D

I’d say you have to make a tough decision Seer. Do you love writing, I mean really love writing? Then do it, don’t ever lose that part of who you are. If you could live without writing (the long stuff I mean) and focus on other things, then do that.

I’m not sure how much I can help, this is a decision you have to make, but I’d advise you to really search yourself before making a decision. I love writing and could not live without it. It is something the Lord had gifted me in (so I’m told), and I feel like it would be a misuse of the talents Christ has given me if I tossed it aside.

However, I understand the being busy part (I’m having a slow day so I’m writing away today!), but I’ll stay up late into the night writing if I have to. I can’t lose that part of what makes me me.

When Samuel (15 month old brother) is in the hospital and I’ve got all the little ones (16 down to three) not much gets done, I even have to call off of work, sometimes for weeks. If I move my siblings up to the Ronald McDonald House so that we can live right next to the hospital where my parents and Samuel are staying then I have a little more time since the daily demands of home life aren’t there.

I’m telling you all of this to say that if God has gifted you and you feel passionate about writing, don’t let Satan derail you with busyness. However, if God is calling you away from your writing, then don’t let Satan derail you from pursuing what the Lord has in store for you.
