When after being asked a question in Sunday School you wish you had the time to write out an essence map as the answer.

When this conversation takes place:

Me: What genre?
Andrew: Realistic. :)
Me: Ah. So it's fantasy? ;)

Perhaps slightly related...

When you discover a new form of torture by shoveling the walk.
(Basically, you shovel, and as you shovel it's snowing, so you go back and shovel again, and it never stops snowing therefore you never stop shoveling, and you freeze to death before you start to starve.)

When you can't stand to have a homework assignment take up more than a page (and use absurdly small writing and margins to keep it so) but can have a dozen random note books with writing and doodles on a few pages and otherwise unused. (But you're saving them! Of course you can't write on those pages!)

You know you're a crazy fantasy writer when...

...you want a leather satchel.

...when you love shirts with billowy sleeves.

...when you eat jerky you pretend that one strip is all you have to eat for 3 days.

...when you analyze your sickness (such as a fever/cold) and try to remember how to describe it for your book.

...when obviously wild animals are the main character's (or any character's) pet.

Guilty on all counts. Especially jerky and wild animals.

Ahem... Greek was one of the languages Elvish was phonaesthetically based on. Along with Finnish, but mainly Latin. Hence...

-When one of your favorite songs is called Kun Mun Kultani Tulisi

-When you go through a wildlife book reading the Latin names out loud for inspiration

I am not necessarily geeky, only taking opportunities.

....Physics class suddenly became interesting, because while discussing electromagnetism, you were given an idea for an entire book.

...The above class is no longer interesting because you are too distracted by the specifics of your idea to listen to the teacher.

Or you trip while you were walking because you're chittering and acting out a scene from your fantasy world...while still walking.

You know you are a crazy fantasy writer when:

You run out into the back yard or into the woods and act out the next scene you have to write, being all the characters. (I have had plenty of experience in playing by myself like that, not having a sister near my age.)

You lie awake in bed for hours talking to yourself and being all the characters in your next scene.

You are always eager to read your story out loud, so you can develop the correct voice for each character.

Everything you see sparks an entirely new story. (Poof!)

You see an old looking book or necklace, ect. and immediately think up some magical powers for it.

You burn the edges of paper and write on it in some made up runes and tape it to your door.

You read any books with dragons on the front, just to get another taste of fantasy.

Whenever you have pencil, paper and markers at your disposal, you draw a cover for your book.

When you are bored, you sit down and make up names as they pop into your head.

You just love old paper and feather pens and half-burned-out candles.

You take your story with you everywhere you go.

When you watch a movie, you are thinking about the tiniest little, obscure details you can possibly find.

You run around in the yard pretending you are flying on a dragon and sword/stick fighting with tree branches.

You tend to go on and on when the subject of writing comes up.

You like looking at people when you to the store or to the ballpark or somewhere like that and guessing at their personalities.

find pleasure in the oddest things, like watching the road disappear under the car or a nail puncturing wood, because it can be used as a metaphor.

OH MY GOSH! When I saw this thread I went absolutely berserk! I read some to my Mom and she was cracking up so bad. Wow... And, like, SOOOO many of the things people are saying, I do

when you shout out phrases from your story right out of the blue, and your family doesn't think anything of it, because, well, it is perfectly normal.

When the way a word is spelled pops into your head every time you say it.

Er . . . wow, that's really weird. Heh heh.

How about when you think of visiting your world rather than building it, of meeting new characters rather than creating them, and of watching events rather than making them up?

Or when you get mad at people who call themselves "Tolkien fans" just because they enjoyed the Lord of the Rings, but who can't even spell Silmarillion, much less have they read it.

Chuckles. My sister Kayla is a VERY protective Tolkien fan and I'm not sure she has read the Sillmarillian...

Umm...

When you are in the shower and the most briliant sentance comes to mind that you think you can write a whole book off of so you have to hop out and write it down with water dripping everywhere.

Thats all I've got... and I havent done most of the ones that have been told so far. I guess I'm just not that un-normal ;)

*chuckles* I recognize it is possible for someone to be a Tolkien fan and have only read Lord of the Rings (though I can't think of any plausible reason unless this person lives over a thousand miles from a library), but it is more likely that they have committed an error in their use of English.
If one has never read anything of Tolkien's other then Lord of the Rings, how can they call themselves a Tolkien fan (barring above example)? It is much more likely that they are only a "Lord of the Rings fan".
I would even go so far as to say that some people that have read everything Middle Earth are not Tolkien fans. Have they read Roverandom, Smith of Wooten Major, or On Faery Stories? I propose it is much more likely for them to be "Middle Earth" fans, than for them to be a Tolkien fan.

That sounds like something that would fit equally well on the "You know you're a Tolkien fan when..." thread.

I am never bored (unless it is self inflicted for aesthetic research: I once described an empty room in my head with what would probably amount to several pages of writing). However I do write down lists of names that come (they do not usually "pop") into my mind. I have a single column of names which is more than thirty six pages long.

A kindred spirit! And some things that are odd because they simply do not happen (that I know of), such as a beam of sun light splitting a hole through a leaf, or a tree ungrowing in exactly the same pattern as it grew, returning to the form of a seed.

I am a Tolkien fan. I have read The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien, and I like it more than the Hobbit, but in a different way, of course. You made good points, there are differences between Tolkien fans, Middle-Earth fans, and Lord of the Rings fans. I would add that there are also fans of the motion picture rather than the books.

I've had LotR fans call me absurd for dabbling in Quenya (I couldn't find Sindarin). I loved On Faerie Stories. It was brilliant.

When you stop coughing for the first time in a day and realize your thought pattern has been to narrate exactly what you're going through. I seem to do that a lot lately without even noticing.

When you're in a sickly, confused daze and realize you've been referring to yourself, not only in the third person, but as a character rather than yourself.
