Well, I have problems with needles. I don't know if it is bad enough to call a phobia, though. Interestingly enough if someone else is more freaked out about me getting poked I'm not scared at all. (Thank you for being freaked out in my place, Momma.)

And... the classic one. Fear of the dark. I tend to just steel myself, but the fact remains: I'm terrified of the dark, especially when I have to walk somewhere in it. I'm usually OK for short distances or if I do not realize it is dark. Otherwise my heart starts pounding. Wikipedia says fear of the dark is called nyctophobia, scotophobia, lygophobia, or achluophobia.

I thought it was a child's fear I would grow out of, but I haven't. Not yet. I'm not sure if I want to, actually. I know this is going to sound weird, but it's almost fun. I guess it operates on the same principle that makes some people enjoy horror movies.

I still sleep with a night light in my room. (It's my fishtanks's light.) ;; I can sleep almost anywhere in the dark but my bedroom.

We played a game once at youth camp where the counsellors pretended to be afraid of something entirely random, like silence, or faces. We had to guess their phobia, and make them go all the way to home free without running away. It was amusing, really.
The fear of going to school is Didaskaleinophobia.
The fear of being touched is Aphenphosmphobia.
The fear of writing is Graphophobia.

I can sleep in the dark, but I prefer having some light. I simply cannot fall asleep when it is too dark to tell your hand two inches in front of your eye. Pitch black just... Scares me.

Claustrophobia here, perhaps--the fear of closed spaces. I wonder if there's a word for the fear of having one's arms pinned to their body? The two are related for me.

Ugh. I can't stand vomiting, even if I know I'll feel better afterwards. I got food poisoning a few weeks ago, and I was telling myself to get it over with at the same time I was forcing the feeling back... (not that y'all wanted to know about it )


I only have a few fears that I've discovered so far, and they're more extreme dislikes than phobias, but they're pretty random: breaking bones, vomiting, darkness, being outside at night by myself, and a couple other things I won't mention.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, my dislike of mice may be considered a phobia. It makes no sense whatsoever, but I pretty much shudder at the thought of mice, and last time I had to sleep somewhere where I knew there were mice I laid and cried for 20 minutes before I could fall asleep O.o Considering I'm not scared of much and don't cry, it's a little weird.

I was always dead scared of getting diseases. I remember the time I found out about lockjaw. I was so scared I was going to get lockjaw for days, maybe weeks afterwards.

Well, I'm not entirely sure, but I think that the throat and wind pipe are different from eachother. I was on howstuffworks.com and looked at something about it and it talked about something called the "epiglottis", which, (according to a web definition) is "A flap of cartilage at the root of the tongue, which is depressed during swallowing to cover the opening of the windpipe." So it sounds like the wind pipe is used for breathing only (aside from turning drinks of water into coughing fits), while the throat is what is used for swallowing. And swallowing air is how I burp at will...

I learned about this in Bio this semester. You have an esophagus and a trachea. Your pharynx is what is commonly called the throat, and both food and air pass there. But it's a relatively small area in your neck. Air goes down your trachea when you breathe normally. When you swallow, your epiglottis (the small flap of cartilige, Wolf) covers your glottis (the opening to the trachea) so that food goes down your esophagus to your stomach and not to your lungs. You cannot breathe and swallow at the same time. Swallowing air would get air down your esophagus to your stomach, which is not where it's supposed to be. When you breathe, you don't swallow. Air is forced into your lungs because there's a lower air pressure in your lungs than outside.
Now you know all kinds of things! If you still don't get it, look up diagrams of the respiratory and digestive systems.
