Welcome, fellow readers!

Is anyone up to reading '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' with Captain Nemo and I? (The Holy Worlds Captain Nemo, not the Captain Nemo in the book. ;) )

You can find the book here, in case you don't have a paper version.

Our reading plan will cover 6-8 chapters a week, depending on the book length.

Should you want to join, please post here.

We will have engaging questions and discussions.

WEEK ONE READING
7 chapters

Week One questions will be posted shortly.

~Elly

Neat! I'm in. :D I was going to read this for the Read-a-thon, but other books got first priority.

I think I read some of it when I was younger. It was very interesting. :D

So...when do we start? Should we start reading ASAP or will there be an official 'start date'?

We'll officially start Sunday, and the questions will probably be posted early to mid week. You can start reading now if you want to. ;) But, since this is the end of a week, we'll just wait for the next week to start and allow other members time to notice this thread before we start. :D

Hey everyone!

Today we are "officially" starting the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea reading for this week. If you have any questions to discuss, or discussion points, please post them. :D

I bid you all good reading, and invite anyone else who wishes to join to jump right in. Have fun, and enjoy reading some great literature. :dieshappy:

I have to say that I'm having a hard time reconciling Ned Land with the character played by Kirk Douglas...

What do y'all think "the monster" is? :D

Elly, can you post the questions for the first seven chapters?

For those of you who do know what the monster is, please read below. Those of you who do not know what it is, don't look because it'll spoil it for you. However you'll find out what it is very soon.

One interesting thing I found about the start of this book was the time period. The story begins in 1866, but according to link, basic submarines were already being used by this time. However, the people were quick to dismiss the possibility of it being a war machine in chapter 2. Why would a submarine be such a novelty and something so unknown if it had already been used? Why would even the government think it was a "monster"? Could it be the size of it, perhaps? Please, share your thoughts! :D

The next reading will be again seven chapters. I bid you all good reading! :D

Yes, I think it's interesting because submarines hadn't been invented yet.

I finished chapter 10, I think. I'll have to check.

I think the idea fell through the cracks... We all got real busy, and no one really posted much here... :P Perhaps at the beginning of next summer we could try another book?

So I'm not the only one who forgot this thread? I was actually planning on dragging it out...

I'm game for whatever. :)

I'll archive this thread now, and when you decide to start one next year you can start up another shiny, new thread. ;)
