Hello! My name is Denise and I'm new to Holy Worlds. I've been writing since middle school but I'm a very flakey type of person and tend to fall out of these things a lot when I begin to fear attachment. I've been writing a book series Muse since around high school graduation (About 4 years). In this time period I've only finished the first book but have been constantly working on races, history, magic systems, character building, and original concepts.

Some more about me
-I'm currently in the US Navy Reserves
-I have a 7 year old son and have been married for a year.
-I've only been a Christian for roughly three years and was raised an atheist.

Some more things about my work
-Story is based one thousand years in the future after a war "instigated" by the nature races elves and ogres. They grew tired of forgotten promises and too many overstepped lines. It was won and the elves, ogres, and other groups from many other races began to help the earth heal.
-Another large part of the story is the Muses and Mediums. Muses are dragons who dedicate their lives to finding the one person in which they are meant to inspire and who are meant to inspire them. The relationship is considered somewhat like soul mates, though they are platonic. I'm a little fearful about this system as it is inspired off of Chrisopher Paolini's Inheritance.

I'm praying that I can keep it together and keep active in this group. And thank you for having me!

Welcome, Denise! :D

Do you have any favorite books?

That sounds like an interesting story idea. Is your 'earth' our earth, just different, or is it another world entirely?

Thanks!

And I do. : ) I'm a big fan of Harry Potter, Inheritance, The Sword from the Chivies Trilogy, and the Dreseden File series.

This earth would be our earth. It just has a kind of hidden history. Everything was there but the general public wasn't aware until certain races and groups got fed up with the arrangement. Also, many of the greatest artists, scientists, and thinkers would be Mediums with Muses that they worked closely. Such as Shakespeare, Einstein, Billy Holiday, Picasso, etc.

Welcome to Holy Worlds! The premise of your series is intriguing. I hope you can finish writing it. :D

Ahh, I was thinking it was something like that. What was it that made the humans hide the other races?

Yay, Cake! :dieshappy:

The Inheritance Cycle just had such a beautifully built world and I loved the magic system. It felt very well thought out and like there was an actual system. I have issues with series that just throw magic out there as a "it's magic so I can't explain it." That being said, I'm horrible at coming up with proper magical systems. :?

Mistress Rwebhu Kidh wrote:

Mostly it was just wanting to be left alone. Humans can be fairly prone to exploiting others where as the other races aren't so much. Its not that the other races are "better" than the human race in anyway. I mean, every race has its problems but all the other races seem more stuck in their ways in my story line where as humans are very fluid and can exhibit many different personality types. Humans are also the only race that can work with any type of magic form. Its actually the center of the whole storyline as to why this is.
(Sorry. Long response is long. :P )

Yeah. The inspiration came from a few different sources. I like the "conspiracy" theory type of thing.

Welcome, Denise! :) I'm pretty new here too and I've had a lovely time so far. Your story sounds neat! So the story is about this war between the races, or the aftermath?

Have you read anything by Brandon Sanderson? He has a reputation for interesting, logical, and well-thought-out magic systems. He's very creative with them, too.

Always fun. :)

Anyways, what hobbies or interests do you have other than writing?

That's great. : ) I'm hoping to learn a lot while in the community. And thank you! The story is based in the aftermath but it's a pretty long time down the line. I would say the war started 150 years in our future and ended just 5 years later.

I looked him up and I've seen quite a few of those books laying around my mothers house actually. :0 She was always trying to get me to read The Wheel of Time series. I feel bad now for never reading them but I'll have to give them a look up now.

I'm also into drawing, painting, gaming of all sorts (board, card, video, I'm not picky!), and scrapbooking.

I like the idea of a story being about the aftermath of a war, not the war itself! So then the plot focuses on the healing process?

The Wheel of Time isn't his series, actually - it was originally by Robert Jordan, but Jordan died before he could finish, so his widow chose Brandon Sanderson to write the last few books. I haven't read the Wheel of Time, so I can't say anything about that, but I can recommend some of Sanderson's other books - the Alcatraz series, Mistborn, etc. I haven't read too much Sanderson yet, but I've loved what I've read so far. :) Also, he has one of his books available for free on his website (haven't read this one yet, though): http://brandonsanderson.com/books/warbreaker/warbreaker/

(I seem to always end up talking about Brandon Sanderson...)

Neat! I like gaming, too. What are some of your favorites? For board games I love Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Puerto Rico...when it comes to video games I mostly enjoy rather mild-mannered Mario stuff, like Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy 2, etc.

Do you ever do art that fits in with your writing?

Not quite. It is brought up a lot but it's mostly a setting for dragons and Muses to be an open subject. The plot actually focuses on a young girl and her muse, the first pairing in ten years. A "curse" has befallen the dragons that makes them incapable of coming out of their dragon forms.
(I have a little bit about the dragons http://www.holyworlds.org/fantasy/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=8975. So the curse would be a big deal as they can't have children.

Yeah, I saw that but I thought they might still have a strong magic system if they picked him :p I think I read the first book though and found the characters boring but I can't quite remember. I just bought Mistborn last night as the E-book set was 14 dollars. :D I'll give him a read and see if it gives me some inspiration. Thank you!

I love settlers myself! I also like Loonacy, Flux, Magic The Gathering, Pokémon, Ascension, and the games just kind of go on. :P Our gaming closet is a mess because of it. I love games like those too. : ) Wii and DS are my favorite consoles but I also love MMORPG's on the PC. I play a bit of World of Warcraft and Guildwars2.

I do. That's how it kind of started. Originally it was just a few dorky sketches with elves as pop stars and rock stars in a kind of sci-fi setting and it sort of evolved. I've also had some art drawn for the characters as well. :D

Perhaps, I don't know...But anyways, let me know what you think once you've read Mistborn, even if you hate it! :) I've only read the first book, but I'm hoping to get the other two when I visit the US again.

That's so neat! I am not a very visual person, and as such I'm a bad artist and can't even imagine my characters in much detail. I've always thought it would be cool to be able to illustrate my stories, though. But I have had fun writing music for stories!

I just finished reading it and thought it was all kinds of wonderful! I liked how Brandon explained magic just enough to make you believe it. And his action scenes were amazing. Not so overdone that I couldn't follow them but also so very interesting. Thinks for showing me his work. I think I have another favorite book series and author. :P

Drawing does help me work out a lot of my ideas as a writer sometimes. Let's me figure out if what I'm saying translates well visually as well. I'm not much of an illustrator though. I just like character design a lot. :p Music is awesome though! I've always been horrendous at understanding basic music concepts. I'll probably post a few of them up. I'm currently working a bit on body types which I'm still fairly bad at.

I tried to make it that way. I've also done basic outlines for a few books and each one I have ending in a cliff hanger, which I'm not sure is good or bad. Most (if not all) of my favorite books end with something pretty comfortable. I just keep wanting to end them with people dying or some other crazy discoveries. : /

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I thought the action scenes were very good too - I often have trouble imagining action sequences since I'm not a very visual thinker, but I had no trouble with this book. And man, if you like this author, you have got TONS of reading material waiting for you! Which, by the way, I'm always happy to discuss...:)

The question is, does the last book end in a cliffhanger? :)

And, how fast do the books come out? :) But in the end I think a cliffhanger at the end of a book can be fun. It tends to get people talking about what's going to happen, and it's always fun to spin crazy theories about what you think the next book will be like.
