So far, I've been unable to attend Realm Makers due to budget and distance, but I know several good friends who went and had a blast. From all that they've told me, it's a very laid back atmosphere.
The year they went, they ended up eating lunch with favorite author Kathy Tyres-due to an allergy on her part (I believe) and the fact that they brought sandwiches instead of paying for the served meal. XD They also had a costume ball with both guests and speakers participating and everyone had a blast. (Again, I'm speaking from second-hand knowledge, but I heard nothing but excitement in their voices.)
I think it really depends upon who is there and what the conference is aimed at teaching. Realm Makers especially is not very in-depth. It's not this huge thing where you get lost trying to find the conference room in a crowd of two thousand people.

I think a new writer should be at ease there.
