Hey everyone - my sister sent me this link and I figured I'd let you guys try it out if you want.

It's supposed to tell you the top three cities whose residents you speak the most like (I think... )

I got San Jose, Fremont, and Oakland, all of which are in California.

I got... I don't remember as I took the quiz a while ago. Places in Oregon, Washington, and another western state. Not surprising, as I live in Washington. XD

I really didn't find this very accurate. In Idaho, where I live, for example, most people immigrated from other states very recently (first, second, third generations) and so we have some very interesting combinations. In my family, we speak a combination of a Missouri-Kentucky accent and a Northwest (Oregon, Washington) accent. In most of the small towns around here, you find similar Southerner-Nortwestern hybrid. And the use of words (pop vs. soda vs. soda-pop) can vary significantly from town to town around here, depending on how many Californians have invaded the area (no offense, of course )

Yeah... I think it's pretty accurate for some people, and not so much for others. The first time I took it it actually got me pretty well – Washington state and Texas were the two red spots on the map, and those are the two places I've lived, other than Ireland (I decided to take it based on how I remember speaking before I moved here, to eliminate the Irish influence). However, the next several times I took it (it gives you different questions each time so I kept taking it) it kept throwing in some red over in the Michigan area as well. I have no idea where that came from. I know some of my great uncles and aunts live way over there, but I didn't see them often enough that I would think they affected my dialect.

Has anyone ever heard of calling fireflies 'peeny-wallies' before? 0.o

I took this quiz! Mainly just for fun, because I live in Canada, so it wouldn't be accurate anyway. It determined I lived in either New York and surrounding area or somewhere around Montana/North Dakota. The latter didn't surprise me because those places are just across the border, although I didn't know I talked like a New Yorker.

Some questions do have a big impact on where it thinks you live, for example because I answered "pop" for carbonated drinks it determined I must live in the northern states and one of my three cities was in the Montana/North Dakota area.


I didn't know it gave you different questions! I'll have to try it again and see what happens.

I got Lexington, Tallahassee, and Chattanooga. Pretty accurate.

I got Mesa, Tempe, and Gilbert; which are north of Tucson, so I guess it's fairly accurate. Though to be honest, I use Southern and British dialect terms pretty freely (eg soda, pop, and soft drink are interchangeable to me, and I call groups of people y'all in addition to you guys)

That's what happens when you're an auditory learner, I guess. You pick up other accents.

I understand, and agree, of course - about the immigrating to Idaho part, not the California invasion - to be honest, I just did it for fun.
