So, do you write fantasy? What genre do you prefer to write in?

Yes and no. I've published a few stories that qualify as fantasy, but it's never really my goal when I set out. It just happens that way.

Rather, my approach is that I've developed a world for my characters, and the time period in which the story is set tends to determine how people view its style. Stories set in the past tend to be viewed as fantasy, those set in the future tend to be viewed as SF. I even had a story set in the present that was published in a literary magazine.

So, all in all, you could call me a "speculative" writer. Does that make sense?

As far as fantasy goes, I tend toward the old stuff - Greek myth, Arthurian legend, Sir Walter Scott & Robert Burns, etc. Of course LOTR is on a pedestal.

But I like to read a lot of other stuff as well. Two of my favorite books are Crime and Punishment and Don Quixote (I usually use a painting of Don Quixote by Picasso as my avatar, but it seems this site doesn't allow that).

Recently I read a hilarious little book called The Pig Did It.

With respect to fantasy I've written on 2 basic themes. The first is what might be called "fan fiction" where I've taken some lesser known Gaelic myths and extended them. One example would be my story "Thomas the Rhymer". The second theme revolves around a race of beings called the Graseq and their prehistory ("pre" meaning before they encountered humans). In that regard, I have a story called "Worm Hunter".

Oooh! Sir Walter Scott is wonderful. I think Ivanhoe might be my favorite book of his. How about you? LOTR is awesome too.

I haven't read the other books you've mentioned. I should check our bookstores here.

My favorite genre is historical fiction, particularly the French revolution, though I like period fiction as well.

Yes, Ivanhoe is the best. In Scott's case, he was either on or he wasn't. So, Ivanhoe ranks as great all time literature, whereas The Talisman gets a shoulder shrug. Meh.



Ah, so do you haunt the history forum the most? I've signed up there as well. So, French Revolution. Does that mean you like A Tale of Two Cities, The Scarlet Pimpernel, or The Three Musketeers?

Again, I like the eastern Mediterranean. So, for historical fiction I prefer Greece, Turkey, Egypt, etc. I really like Orhan Pamuk, the Turkish writer who won the Nobel Prize (My Name is Red).

I've only read snippets of Ivanhoe, but as I'm trying to 'broaden' my literary knowledge, Sir Walter Scott is going on my to-read list.

Yes to all three! Those are listed among my top favorite books. That's why, if you'll head over to the Historical Forum, you'll see a Lady Marguerite Blakeney.

I've read some Egyptian historical fiction. Particularly the ones by Elois Jarvis McGraw. Have you read them? I haven't read anything by Orhan Pamuk yet, but he sounds quite interesting.

No, it's not confusing! You just have to keep an eye on the mini profiles that are on the left side of each post, below the avatar.

Yes, you should check out McGraw. Two of the books she wrote that are historical fiction are The Golden Goblet and Mara, Daughter of the Nile.

I guess I may as well welcome you on all three forums. Welcome to the Fantasy side of things. After reading your intro threads here and on the other two forums, it sounds like you will fit in very well. I look forward to seeing future posts from you.

OK, so first question. What is behind the name "Mimetes"? It appears everyone here is related.

I will try to explain, but please forgive me if I do a poor job of it. The young man who envisioned and started Holy Worlds chose the name Sir Emeth Mimetes. About a year ago, he went to jail (you can read more on that here [60+pages] or here [a lot shorter, but with the same information]). After he went to jail, many members chose to support Sir Emeth by changing their usernames to contain the name "Mimetes" until the time when Jay can again return to the forums. Mimetes is also Greek for "imitator" or "follower" and by choosing this username, we are committing to be imitators and followers of Christ and encouraging our brother. Hopefully that explains it well enough. Let me know if something is still unclear.
