Why not? I can come up with defenses for why I think it's not only a satisfying ending for the trilogy (especially for people like me who grew up on TS 1 & 2 and are now college-age like Andy), but also a very amazing example of expert storytelling. But I'll avoid letting the screenwriter in me (screenwriter amplified with Pixar geekiness) rant. :D

It is mostly personal. I'm not ashamed to admit that I still sleep with my faithful stuffed dog Shadow. He was my Mom's when she was a kid, although he was in so much better care when she had him. He now looks like the velveteen rabbit version of his old self :) He's floppy and rag dollish now from the past 20 years of loving him. So he is my Woody, if you will. There is no way I could give him up to someone else. It sounds crazy, but my emotional attachment to him is strong. Not because he was ever my coping mechanism, or my "blanky" as a child, but the memories he holds locked up in his little stuffed body are priceless. He's also been saturated with my tears before, traveled the east coast with me and my friend, and traveled all over the world during my Daddy's military carrier, including Japan. Giving him up is an unthinkable thought. Daddy teases my husband won't like sharing the bed with Shadow. *shrugs* Whenever that day comes Shadow will move to an honored place on the nursery shelf, where he will get handed down to my first child to love all the more.

I always watched the Toy Story Movies growing up and linked Shadow with Woody, although no other stuffed creature has ever taken his place. When I watched the movie and saw the ending, I was devastated. It was nice that the toys would not be put in the attic, I was glad, but for Andy to let go of Woody was devastating to me. I couldn't do that.

So yeah, it's personal, that's why I don't like it.

It was the kind of ending you definately don't go in wanting, but you come out being content with it. For me that entire movie was a very cathartic experience, because I do miss that time when every little piece of fabric stuffed with cotton could be a best buddy. But I came out happy, teared up, but happy. The ending was perfect, in my opinion. Andy has to go on, he has to grow up, it wouldn't be healthy for him to just stay home and play with his toys. He has to be an adult with real friends. But you see his younger self coming out as he plays with Bonnie and Woody, he's doing the exact same things he does as a kid. It's closure for him. He has to say goodbye to his younger self, his childhood buddies. But he still loves them. "Thanks guys" was one of the best Pixar lines ever. And then his little catch of breath as Bonnie waves Woody goodbye. It was just so gorgeous.
It's emotional manipulation, I know. I was sitting in the theatre saying "If they do this, I'm going to loose it," and then they did it. But it was just so honest and heartbreakingly realistic. It could've happen. A little kid would wave a toy goodbye. So I totally could totally believe it. And yes, I cried. So did my daddy, and half the grown men in the theatre. "Er, u, just got something in my eye there, erm, well, gee, how did popcorn get in my eye?" It was really funny, because the little kids were just saying "Don't give Woody away!" while the adults and teenagers were having this huge emotional experience. If I hadn't been desperately trying to compose myself I might've found it extremely interesting.

And Airi, that's how you can know if the guy is right! Only someone who really loves you would be able to understand Shadow, and be willing to share with him.

*chuckles* I agree it was an ending I was content with. I was just disappointed that Andy gave Woody up. I'm an adult, and no one believes me when I say I still sleep with Shadow *chuckles*. I don't have to. I choose to.

And while that may be true, Cel, he won't have to worry about it. I don't plan on sleeping with Shadow once I'm married. I tell my Daddy, in answer to his teasing, that he does the same thing. He sleeps cuddled up next to my mom every night. When I have someone else, I'll let shadow pass down. Until then, they can all tease away :D I didn't sleep with Shadow when I was bottle feeding and raising my 4 week old kitten. So I don't think I'll have an issue. But that is very sage advice :)

I felt exactly the same, Airi. I too (ironically) have a stuffed dog that I've had since I was born, and his place is still in my bed. All the years of watching Toy Story "Puppy" was my Woody, so it was devastating to see him give him away. I wouldn't lock my Puppy away in the first place; he always stays on my bed! :D

I'll let Daddy know that there is another adult out there as insanely messed up as his daughter ;)

In my opinion Incredibles is the BEST Pixar has ever done. It was epic.

Ah, that makes sense. The ending of TS3 just makes me want to sob every time, which is part of what makes it beautiful. If you will allow the screenwriting geek a little stage for a moment...

What amazed me most about that film is, while watching it the first time, I had NO idea what a "happy ending" would be. Usually, with a story, I have some kind of idea - they get home, they get out of it alive, they find such-and-so, whatever. With this story, there seemed to be no "right answer." They couldn't stay at the daycare, and going to the attic wasn't satisfying. I was at a complete loss until Andy pulled up in front of Bonnie's house... and then it all fell together. It was beyond gorgeous and so perfect.

That, my friends, is storytelling.

I agree. :)

I also liked the ending of TS3. It was satisfying and well done. (Pixar is known for doing that.) Although I didn't cry. In fact, I vaguely remember grinning at some point. Am I heartless? :P

No, I did the same thing. Unless I'm heartless too... that would be sad. I'd cry at my heartlessness :'( ...which I suppose proves I have a heart.

I wished that the ending would somehow be that the toys eventually belonged to Andy's kids. Wishful thinking I guess... I watched too much Toy Story as a kid I think, because I imagined my toys had a life when I wasn't there. :D

Knowing Pixar, I believe that if you continued the history after the movies, a grownup Bonnie gave the toys to Andy's kids. But that's just me being sentimental. ;)

Is anyone else looking forward to Cars 2?

That was hilarious!

I was thinking last night, I should refute some of the facts displayed in Finding Nemo in case anyone wants to visit Australia. So:

1. Our dentists are not butchers. Not at all. They won't tear your teeth out if a pelican hits the window. Trust me.

2. Australian fish do not have an American accent.

3. A lot of surfers actually do talk like the turtles.

4. If you go swimming out on the reef, I can't guarantee that the sharks are still "nice sharks, not mindless eating machines".

5. Clownfish only look funny.

6. Also, Australian dentists don't talk with that much of an Australian twang. :D

"Oh, that's great. If anyone attacks us, we can blink 'em to death." (Woody, TS1)

"It's not a la-ser!! It's a little light bulb that blinks!!" (Woody, TS1)

P1: "Pretend I'm Merida. Speak to me. What would you say?"
P2: "I can't do this..."
P1: "Sure you can." (Elinor gives him a dirty look) "There! There! That's my queen. Right? Here we go..." (in a shrill voice): "I don't want to get married, I want to stay single and let my hair flow in the wind as I ride through the glen firing arrows into the sunset."

I haven't finished the Incredibles either... My Mom said the same thing.

Your opinion of The Incredibles will hopefully soon change... 1. You haven't seen the whole thing. 2. You haven't seen it with my family. After those two requirements are met, I allow you to form your own opinion. ;)

I think my family likes that movie so much is it applies to our family a lot. We can relate to it very well. I personally love it. But, of course... I've pretty much loved every single Pixar movie ever made... Brave and Cars 2 were the weakest ones, IMO.

Anywho, this is for quotes, not discussions. ;) *will go create thread for discussions*

"YOU. ARE. A. TOY!" ~ Woody, Toy Story

"BUT I DON'T WANT TO USE MY HEAD! AAAAAHHHHHHH!" ~ Rex, Toy Story 2

"Who's the real Buzz Lightyear?"
"I am!" ~ Woody, both Buzzes, Toy Story 2

"Look at us! We're a complete set!"
"Now it's off to the museum in Japan!"
"JAPAN? o.O " ~ Jessie, Stinky Pete, and Woody, Toy Story 2.

"Put that thing back where it came from, or so help me--!" *monsters are staring* *Sully puts Boo behind him* "Uh... Hi. We were just practicing for the company musical!" *starts singing* "Put that thing back where it came from, or so help me! So help me!" ~ Mike, Monster's Inc.
