Charis Rhiannyr (a.k.a. Luthien Tinuviel's Mom) greets you all --

Quite an interesting crowd assembled here. Nice to meet you all. [waves to some of the shyer creatures hanging to the back]

I am a big scifi/fantasy fan, and have been lurking here for some time. So when Luthien began the OYAN curriculum last Spring and joined their forum, I suggested she check out your forums too ... and she's been an active member of both communities ever since.

I really haven't done any creative writing since elementary school. In high school, I was required to read a lot of twaddle and muck. College literature classes were worse. A more sorry, soul-squashing, unimaginative collection of writings would be hard to find. But in between hs and college, I discovered Middle Earth and Narnia, and fell in love.

My college had one distinct advantage for a scifi fan -- its location. It was in a tri-state area with clear reception for three PBS stations. Flipping through the stations one Saturday afternoon I made a momentous discovery, Dr. Who. And with three PBS stations to choose from, when I wasn't in class, or working in the library or at the computer lab, there was a pretty good chance of catching a Dr. Who episode (who needs sleep in college?).

After college and before the advent of Luthien, I was at first a statistical programmer/analyst and later an economic researcher. As such I wrote a great quantity of drivel about "levels of statistical significance" and "simultaneous testing of the hypothesis" which received much acclaim (and paid well too). However, you could not in any sense call it creative. There are many, many economists writing under contract to the federal government whose writing is entirely fictional, but alas I was not one of them.

My life since Luthien's arrival has been full of surprises, and there are many demands on my time. I am determined now to cast some of my duties aside, like the housework for example, and try my hand at some creative writing. We have a household where dolls and animals play and talk, and inanimate objects are sometimes hard to keep under control. With all of this creativity zapping around, I ought to be able to channel some of it on to a piece of paper or a computer file or something - and claim credit for it.

Well that's enough about me, except that I look forward to getting to know you all.

Thanks for the welcome, folks.

And Danko Sandal: Chocolate in any form, magical or otherwise, is always appreciated.

After consuming hearty portion: Besides being delicious, dare I ask... what are the properties of magical chocolate pudding?

Be careful of your thoughts; guard your mind, for your thoughts become words. Be guarded when you speak, for your words turn into action. Watch what you do, for your actions will become habits. Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you. Instead, He’s opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Thanks Elly!

Airianna, I enjoy fantasy - such as that written by Tolkien and Lewis - because it takes your mind away from the everyday, familiar environment you move through, work in, learn in, sometimes struggle with, and places you somewhere very different where you can relax a bit, make new discoveries, sometimes laugh, sometimes cry, and become involved in the work and play and concerns and struggles of someone very different from yourself, who you may turn out to have a lot in common with when you strip away the fantastical environment. How's that for a massive run-on sentence?

"She went to bed thinking more about another person than about herself. This goes to prove that even minor poetry may have its practical uses."
Dorothy Sayers, Gaudy Night

I am honored by your welcome, Calenmiriel.

And thank you, Lady Aris. Now I have something cute and cuddly to snooze on my lap while I am writing.

Greetings and welcome, Charis! :D We are excited to see you on Holy Worlds! I know, at least for myself, it is always exciting to see the parents out and about. :)

On another note, what have you written? I'd love to read some of it if you're comfortable sharing it. :)
