Post subject:  Hello!

Hello,
I'm quite new here, though I stumbled on the blog/forum some years back.

I've been interested in writing for as long as I can remember, but I have yet to really find the motivation to carry a project through to completion, much less actual publication.

I write a variety of genres of fiction, though they often include some sort of fantastical elements in them. Anything from full-on secondary worlds to simply "scientific" elements that don't really exist (somewhere on the superhero spectrum, generally, so maybe more sci-fi in nature?).

I'm also quite interested in history, and have several projects set in time periods from Ancient Rome/Germany to WWII. This besides historically inspired stories without actual timing or realism or country-specific connections.

Anyway, I've never really been a part of a writing community before, and I'm hoping for the chance to meet up with others with similar interests in writing fiction that points readers to the glory of God, whether subtly or overtly in it's messages.

Welcome to Holy Worlds.

The Weekly Challenges are a good place to start to motivate to just write.
(Watch out for people throwing cupcakes.)

Thank you for the greetings!

atpollard I'll be sure to check out the challenges... having some form of accountability always helps in maintaining consistency. :)

Lt. General Hansen. Cupcakes sound lovely ;) Yes, I've been fascinated by history and the retelling thereof for... a long time. Do you have specific eras/countries that most interest you?

My personal favorite era is the Revolutionary War. I eat that stuff up. :book: I'm currently working on a very long project set in that era...

What era was your most recent project set in?

This sounds a lot like me (except that I can't seem to imagine starting a story that wasn't connected in some way to my main Big Work ...)

Anyway, welcome!

The project I last spent much time on was set in the 1910. Not an era that I usually spend much time on, but this one story seemed to work best there. (And inspiration from Downton Abbey may have helped ;) )

The Revolutionary War is fascinating stuff. Do you tend to focus more on a particular side of it (military/political/civilian), or a mix of all of the above?

kingjon Thank you :)
I am trying to simplify and focus a little better, but every time I think I'm getting somewhere, something else triggers a new idea and I'm right back where I started. :P

All of the above. <gathers all the Revolutionary War peoples into a group hug> ^_^ What era are you researching/writing in right now?

That's why I try to avoid spending too much time reading history textbooks; they tend to spawn a half a dozen alternate-history ideas per sitting, which I don't have time to develop right now. :)

The Revolutionary War is about as late as my interest in history or historical fiction runs (though I'm exceedingly fond of Patricia Wrede's Frontier Maigic trilogy, which is set soon after that world's American Civil War equivalent); as a reader, I'm most drawn to the British Regency period (mostly Pride and Prejudice fan-fiction) and the medieval era, with Ancient Rome being a close third, while my alternate-history ideas range from the classical period (what if Alexander the Great lived longer and founded a lasting empire?) into the 18th century (what if the English Commonwealth continued for more than the one generation?)

And I'll echo our host's question:

My current works in progress are largely modern in timing, although one will overlap with a fantasy world at least partially inspired by ancient (Roman, Greek eras, probably) times. I haven't spent enough time on it yet to know what I shall have to research regarding it yet— I want to rely more on forms of weaponry that isn't as popular in most fiction. Slings, spears, and the like were fairly heavily relied upon once upon a time, and I like the idea of including information about items often overlooked and forgotten.

kingjon I know what you mean. Amongst the piles of books I have in progress there's one on the history of the Magna Carta, and there's so much to inspire one in it— I look forward to getting back to it, but also expect that it will be yet another distraction from stories already on the go. :P ^_^

Hello! It's delightful to have you here! Cool to see somebody who writes so many different genres.

Thank you for the welcome! Sorry for the delayed response—I got a little distracted trying to keep up with doing the July Camp NaNoWriMo challenge.

What kinds of genres do you write in?

Nice! How did Camp NaNoWriMo go?

I write mainly fantasy and science-fantasy. Dabble a little bit in other genres, but mostly those.

Post subject:  Re: Hello!

This past month's Camp Nano was my first successful attempt at finishing my word count goals outside of the "official" NaNoWriMo, even though this was one of the first times that I aimed for the full 50k. And also definitely the first time in which I've finished a NaNoWriMo challenge and still been interested in continuing the project :P . All in all, a great success!

Yay for fantasy! Do you prefer stand-alone stories, or trilogies/series?
