Have you watched Sora no Woto, or Howl's Moving Castle?

Sword Art Online, anyone?

That's the only anime I've seen (also read the first book)… and I like it a lot.

Haven't heard of that, Mistress Kidh. What's the basic plot?

I swear that at one point, I watched Howl's moving castle, but I'm not sure.

I watched this one about several steam balls and a giant wooden steam generated mecha but I can't remember that name either.

I've kinda watched SAO, but not much.

I watch two of the big three anime. Bleach and Naruto.

Zankyou no Terror is a weird anime. So is Psycho-pass.

I haven't actually watched it, but I like it and I want to. My mother says she doesn't like manga or anime or anything like that, and when I told her that she would like it if she saw more, she wouldn't believe me. So I showed her a still from Howl's Moving castle, and then she admitted that she did like some anime. * grins *

Anyway, it's about Howl, who's sort of.. a magic guy. And it's about Sophie, who gets on the wrong side of a witch, who turns her into an old woman. Sophie ends up being Howl's housekeeper on his moving castle. And I think that at some point, she gets young again, and there's a romance between her and Howl somewhere in all that.

If you're asking about Sora No Woto, I don't actually know as much about it. It has to do with music, and a horn player, and I think it's pretty awesome too, as far as I know.

I'm not much into anime, but it's only because my family isn't. I like it, and if you guys know of some clean ones that are nice I'd like to know.

What's SAO like?

Well..... Zankyou no Terror follows two teen.....terrorists as they seek to blow up buildings to prove a point. Supposedly there's a connection they want the police to find out.

Psychopass is an anime where Japan has figured out a way to manage crime. Everyone has a Psycho-Pass which measures their probability to cause chaos or to become a threat. A clear PP means you're an upstanding citizen. Visually, it's measured by a color for convinence. For the police, it's measured by a number. Police investigators work with enforcers who are essentially criminals with high PP numbers who work for the police. Each police member is deployed in the field with an Eliminator, which measures the PP of the target. Targets with a low PP are deemed not a threat and the eliminator doesn't activate. Targets with a high PP are either paralyzed, or atomically obliterated, depending on the level.

And then you get a guy whose PP never clouds over....and you have a problem.

It's interesting.

Word wise, I do not remember. I think it's relatively clean.

Content wise, I'd give it an. "M". There's some graphic nudity, violent dismemberment and sketchy topics they touch on.

As of now, that's T. There's no nudity or dismemberment, although the story is about well intentioned terrorists, so view at your own discretion.

I think I'd enjoy watching Zankyou no Terror, better, then. I don't go for nudity.

I'll have to see some of it, soon.

I agree. Anime is great (some of it XD). I do like Studio Ghibli. I want to watch more of those during the summer.

Leave it to Abigail to find and resurrect all the anime threads from the dead. ;)

Has anyone seen Trigun? It's not as well-known, although Vash the Stampede is a fairly iconic character. The ending is a bit vague, but Vash as a character is AMAZING. He'll be an invincible gunslinger one moment, and the next moment he's all like DONUTS. It's a quirky combination and it really makes the show.

I've seen a little of the show. I didn't like the animation style, though, and for me, the art has a major effect on my opinion. :P

Psychic Detective Yakumo is about a guy who can see ghosts. He uses this ability to investigate supernatural mysteries.

Psychic Detective Yakumo - try reading the mangas, I believe there's 2 different manga adaptations of the novels. I enjoyed them but haven't gotten around to the anime.

Psycho-pass - it's a more solid anime than Zankyou no Terror but definitely really violent, including body horror. I had to look away a lot. But the plot is more solid.

Zankyou no Terror - I felt it was more about how the kids were trying to call attention to the people who treated them poorly (the whole experimenting on them thing) and was played as a tragedy. I liked it even though I felt the pacing got to be a bit off midway. I cried at the end.

Trigun - the art grows on you in the show but if it really annoys you go for the manga. It also fleshes out the story and the characters for extra fun/pain. Still one of the best I've read.

*pokes head in*

Trigun is crazy awesome; I actually like some of the elements from the anime much better than their manga counterparts.

Studio Ghibli films are always interesting. Oddly, I think my favorite is Tales from Earthsea- even though it bears no resemblance to the book series, I like it a lot.

Shingeki no Kyojin! (or Attack on Titan for those of you who watch dubs :P ) My favorite anime by a huge margin. Anyone else watch it?

Oh, and RWBY. Can't forget that xD I don't know if it counts, because it's American-made, but it's styled after JRPGs/spectacle fighters and is really quite good (if you can bear with the lower animation production values for the first season).

Author:  Rachel Newhouse [ June 22nd, 2016, 10:04 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Anime Otakus Discussion Thread

Trigun was actually the first anime I watched all the way through. Vash is such a fantastic character. I love how he's equally awesome gunslinger and squealing dork at the same time.

I love Howl's Moving Castle. It's quite different from the book but very fun in it's own right. I haven't watched much anime in a while - Manga took over my interests for a long time. But I always leaned toward the shoujo side of things.

Fruits Basket is one of my top faves and a great fantasy. The anime is good but only covers the first few books and got a few things wrong.

Post subject:  Re: Anime Otakus Discussion Thread

Did you see that Fruits Basket is getting a new omnibus release? (3-in-1) I haven't looked at many of Yen Press' omnibus printings but they tend to be better than the shounen jump ones so I have hope it'll be a sturdy binding.

Post subject:  Re: Anime Otakus Discussion Thread

I hadn't see it. Since I own all 20+ volumes, I haven't been looking. But I have noticed a lot of the older series coming out in omnibuses. Makes me want to look into a few I've always meant to get around to reading but never did.

Anyone enjoy Kenshin? I always liked the anime and the 3 live-movies made recently were well done, too.

Author:  Melody Kondrael [ July 1st, 2016, 8:32 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Anime Otakus Discussion Thread

Ah fair point. I believe it had been out of print since Tokyopop went under so for some people this will be the first time they can obtain it in years.

I like Kenshin too! I need to finish watching or reading it of course... but the live action movies are so good. Need to finish watching them too. (I always forget I didn't finish because I have so many warm feelings towards them)

Finally saw My Neighbor Totoro recently. That makes the 6th (I think) Studio Ghibli I've seen (after Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, The Secret World of Arriety, Howl's Moving Castle, & Ponyo). I can see why it's famous but I don't think I'll be wanting to watch it very often.

Also saw the recently wildly popular Your Name. It was very good - I had heard raving things about it and definitely see why it won a bunch of awards. My daughter's a major fan so she bought the anime and the manga - they're pretty much the same but the manga expands on the story just a bit so it's fun to read even when you already know the gist of the story.

Someone gave us a pile of anime/manga recently and I was wondering if anyone's seen/read them and could give me a quick idea if they're appropriate for my daughter to read. (She's 14 on Saturday.) I'm planning to read the manga real quick to make sure (Her Majesty's Dog) but I don't know how much of the anime I want to prescreen if I don't have to...

The anime are:
E's Otherwise
Escaflowne (I've heard of this one but know nothing about it - looks like one of those robot animes?)
Spiral (I watched it years ago and loved it but I don't remember anything about it.)
