Has anybody seen the move Thor? I've heard of it, watched a trailer and a couple clips, and read some reviews. It sounds pretty good; can anybody around here tell me what you thought of it?

*raises hand and bounces excitedly* I saw it! I thought it was a good movie as far as storyline goes. :D It was sort of short, but I didn't really mind.

They put a few good biblical references and some Christian morals in there too so it was also good as far as morality goes. It was also pretty funny; it balanced funny with serious well, though. :D Anyways, 'twas a good movie.

I will see this one soon.
My parents went and saw it and loved it! Plus they said the little boys could see it when it came out on DVD.

Actually, I was surprised by this one. It was fairly clean with little language, not much sexual junk, other than the girls oogling over Thor *rolls eyes * and has a surprising moral twist at the end that transforms the impetuous boy Thor was, into a selfless man. Not bad this time around.

Also, for those who have issues with action, the film was relatively “safe” on that level. Little blood aside from bodily cuts and lacerations. The bad guy’s powers are ice, so lots of people get frozen, and then demolished, but that’s not gory at all.

Not one that we are going to put in the library, but fine to go watch if you want your boys to be able to have some clean action.

I'm waiting for this to come out on DVD!

Why was it rated PG-13 then? Like you said, Kaitlyn, it sounds pretty 'tame' for a PG-13 film. (though maybe I'm just growing up because some violence doesn't bother me as much as it used to...)

I think it was PG-13 for the fighting scenes. To younger viewers, the changing people to ice could be graphic (though it didn't bother me). It had some blood too, but not an unrealistic amount, actually, it was very minimal. It could have also been rated PG-13 for any of the romantic content they had (it was really just one kiss towards the end of the movie, if I recall correctly).

Maybe they made it barely bad enough for a PG-13 rating so that teenagers wouldn't think it was a movie for little kids. (I know, it's ridiculous to think that way, but they do.)

I think the newer Marvel comics movies (besides maybe Daredevil) will be more like the way Thor is because Marvel is owned by Disney.

I haven't seen it, but it is on my list to see (after Green Lantern from Marvel's rival, DC Comics).

You're right Aemi.

I've read about the PG-13 rating. It BARELY got it. It seems like no one wants to go see G or PG movies anymore. But if you have a PG-13 movie that sounds exciting but not too dangerous. It's the most lucrative movie rating out there.

It's kind of incredible to compare something like Thor (barely PG-13)to X-men (almost R). Both rated the same but X-men has considerably more baggage. (It's still fun to watch, but not nearly as family friendly.)

Yeah, it is a PG, but they almost didn't get the rating. Willow is right. People don't want to see G and PG anymore. Too tame. Too desensitized.

Romance didn’t play into the PG-13 rating. It was the violence. A lot of ice people get smashed up by Thor's hammer. But like I said, it was tame.

I read that the new one was one of the best superhero movies to come out in a long time.

People thought Iron Man was great too, doesn't mean that it was appropriate.

What parts of Thor seemed inappropriate for little kids, in your opinion?

The review as in World magazine, news from a Christian worldview. I'll have to go find their review of Thor.

Okay, I figure I’ll break down the stuff I remember from the film. What we’d let our family watch, may be different than yours, so if I just list what I can remember, you can make a decision. We are okay with more violence than some people (we like Master and Commander, and I know some families on here would not let their kids see it, for violence reasons).

Those of you who do not know, my Father has been building a family library (which includes entertainment media like Jonathan Park and movies for our enjoyment) for the last 9 years. Due to this fact, I am in charge of breaking down the movies we choose to see, passing things off to Daddy for consideration for the library. Part of my job is listing the cons of the films for Daddy, that way he doesn’t have to try and remember all of them himself. He’s a busy man.

One of the first things I look for is sexual content. Sexual innuendo, ogling, and references, are one of the biggest things that make families uncomfortable. They don’t want their young children exposed to that. Who can blame them?

In this film, we actually find that instead of having women ogled and exploited, the male character is instead. It’s mild, but it is there none the less. Darcy (not the love interest) volunteers her CPR services for Thor after she gets a look at his face and muscular body. Darcy also makes reference to how “cut” Thor is, when he has a shirtless scene.

Also, when Thor is in the hospital he gets a little violent, causing the Drs to pull down his drawers and shoot him with a sedative. We don’t actually see anything, but you get a little more flesh than you may want. For a second, I wondered if the camera was going to show me something I didn’t want to see.

In the end, Thor plants a courtly kiss on Jane’s hand, and she throws herself at him for a passionate lip lock.

Violence. It’s pretty constant, but not bloody. Some Ice guys are obviously skewered, though we don’t linger over this, and Thor pounds some guys with his hammer. Men are frozen and crushed, and I think there is even someone who crumbles into dust and is carried off into the wind. *shrugs * Can’t remember. Some frostbite is pictured, but it isn’t gruesome.

Thor gets hit by a van two or three times. No blood. He’s thrown, but is relatively unaffected, showing his super human strength. Thor also inflicts a good bit of damage while on earth. He beats up several military agents, police, Scientists, and some Doctors get more than their fair share of patients in the beginning. Thor also gets tazered by Darcy (hilarious!), but that could be disturbing to some people.

The only other things I can think of is language and drug use. There is a handful of language. I think three different words are used, some twice. References are also made of Thor being “hammered” when they pick him up (which he isn’t). But I doubt little kids will pick up on that. Thor and Erik are also pictured in a bar at one point, and Thor has to carry home a very drunk Erik.

And I can’t think of anything else…. This is a nitpick, by the way. I thought the overall tone was clean. The violence wasn’t gory. The effects were cool. And there are some positive elements to the movie.

Hope that helped.

I saw it. It reminded me of Casablanca after it ended. The story was outstanding, flashy, or anything, but rather, a solidly, well-written story that understands the meaning of heroism.

I really liked it.

I recently saw this. Very good movie! It deserved PG-13 in my opinion but still think it is fine for kids. I really liked how Thor's character arced and the cinematography was outstanding.
I've seen most of Marvels superhero movies and I would say this one was the cleanest I've seen.

So, I've finally seen Thor. :) Not just read about it.

And it's wonderful! My favorite character was Loki. As the god of magic and trickery, he's always ten steps ahead of everyone else, and has really cool powers and fighting style. But he's also a really complex antagonist, and Tom Hiddleston did a GREAT job of portraying him. :)

Yeah I thought Loki was a great antagonist who wasn't as shallow as you usually see in superhero movies.

Actually, by the end I was wishing he was the main character of the movie instead of Thor... :dieshappy:

I was really pleased by how clean Thor was. It wasn't a bad movie at all, from that standpoint.
My problem with the movie was how much depth the characters lacked. Because of it, I didn't really enjoy the movie.
Except Loki. I loved Loki. (Even if I really never got what exactly was going on... more of that lack of depth)

Granted, I'm also not a Marvel fan, aside from X-men and Captain America.

Yeah, comic movies aren't exactly know for their depth.
Thor's character arch was alright but it was too quick of a change I think.

On the other hand I liked Captain America even better than this one and his character basically didn't change.

Yeah, the character depth was a big downer for me. Especially in the female love interest. I mean, what was there really about her that made him change so much?

Okay, Captain America was just awesome from the start. He didn't need to change. :) My favorite scene is when he lays over the fake bomb. :) I enjoyed Captain America more too, Joe.

The real depth in comic books are in the comics themselves, if they're the newer, when you're with a character for years and through a whole bunch of stuff.

I used to be a DC fan, but no more. They've taken comic book objectification of women to a whole new height with their relaunch. That and they don't have a clue how to write their stories anymore.

I watched this a while back, and thought it was pretty good. It was clean and very entertaining. The characters weren't particularly deep, but I loved seeing Thor adjust to the real world - that aspect of the story had me laughing pretty hard a few times. :)

In other words... I agree with everyone else.

*laughs * Yeah, that was very funny. I also liked Darcy's "They took my iPod" comment. :D

Both of those were really funny. Another one was when he flung his coffee mug to the ground and was like, "More!"

There were lots of funny cultural moments in the movie.

I LOVED those scenes. I'm not much of a comic person, or even a super hero person for the most part, but I must say I liked this movie a lot. The fantastical elements probably had something to do with that... ;)

And, you guys noticed the dude with the bow, right...? The really cool dude...?
I want to see the Avengers movie now! :dieshappy: :dieshappy:

Yeah, he's Green Arrow from the Justice League comics.

Wrong series--only reason I know that is because I looked it up. That's Hawkeye. The government dude even calls him Barton (Hawkeye's 'real' name being Clint Barton) He's another dude from the Avengers team--and he's going to be in the movie!
I love his lines about Thor: 'Do you want me to slow him down sir? Or are you sending in more guys for him to beat up? ...You'd better call it, 'cause I'm starting to root for this guy."

Well, that would make more sense, then. Green Arrow is DC comics, not Marvel, and a part of the Justice League, not the Avengers. I was a bit perturbed that they were mixing the two, so I am glad to see that is not the case. I don't really know anything about Hawkeye.

I don't either. I'm not sure he has his own comic series.

Green Arrow's more like Batman, and Hawkeye looks more like a solider.

I've seen more trailers, and I find it interesting that Thor and Loki have different hairdos.

Different hairdos? I hadn't noticed, though that is pretty funny...

I like Hawkeye better than the others because--as far as I can tell--he doesn't really have a superpower. He's more like, as Varon said, a soldier. Plus...he's an archer. I mean, how much cooler can you get? ;)
